Nothing can be more appealing for a reader than to relish the life experiences of others. It
adds to their delight if the story talks about the personal life of a famous celebrity, that also,
in his own voice. Reading an autobiography is fun because you feel as if the person is
himself narrating the incidents straight out of his daily life. Such books contain a soul as they
recollect personal struggles faced by a person of distinction.
Here are a few autobiography books from the leaders who made substantial contributions
in shaping the modern India.
The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mahatma Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi covers
his entire journey from his early childhood to 1921. This is the spiritual book of a lifetime as
it explores truth through an individuals perspective. It includes narrations of moral and
spiritual experiments. Gandhiji recollected his experiences during childhood. On his way to
define his personal philosophy, it shows how Gandhiji relied on the sacred texts as well as
from one-to-one interactions with people.
I Too Had a Dream by Verghese Kurien It opens with the background about Dr. Kurien to
reveal how a quaint little town grew to become the Milk Capital of our country. He builds his
eventful life story upon the circumstances that send him to Anand. The book unravels how
the cooperative model is replicated for the dairy sector and how a community based
organisation is able to sustain itself by overcoming social, political, economical and
organisational obstacles.
The Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru One of the favourites, this book is special as it
was penned down by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru himself while he was kept in confinement at
Ahmednagar Fort in the state of Maharashtra. Through his autobiography, he pays a tribute
to the cultural heritage of our country as well as its history and philosophy as a freedom
fighter. The edition is counted amongst the finest modern contributions to modern history.
It contains personal essays and deep prose woven around historical facts. A dedication to
the prisoners of the jail, the book is a mixture of art, religion, science, philosophy,
economics and social movement.
