Unit Summary:
During this unit students will explore poetry through literature
and writing. First, students will be introduced to poetry
terminology and different types of poems. Next, students will begin
looking at the meaning of poems and song lyrics through class
discussion and individual practice. The final assessment for this
unit will be a poetry booklet that will be given to someone
important in the student’s life. The booklet will include found
poems as well as student work and explanations of what the
poems mean and why they were selected.

Assessments:
Formative:
During the first week, students will be writing a poem (a
different type each day) following the guidance of the
teacher. We will discuss the different types of poems and
how each one is unique. These poems will be collected and
assessed by the teacher.

Students will also be responding to poems and song lyrics to


determine meaning. Some of these activities will be done as a
class and others will be completed on an individual basis.

Students will hand in their response to the poems at the end


of class.

Summative:
The main assessment for this unit is the poetry booklet.
Students will be creating a poetry booklet for someone
special in their lives. Students will be required to find poetry
that relates to the recipient as well as writing poetry of their
own. Each poem will have a written statement from the
student explaining what the poem means and why it was
chosen. After being graded by the teacher, these booklets will
go home with students to be given to the intended recipient.
