Synopsis
Composite slabs consists of structural steel decking, reinforcement bars and/or mesh, and in-situ concrete. The
structural steel decking has multi functions, namely as the temporary working platform, the permanent formwork for
floor slab, and also as the slabs positive moment reinforcement. There are two types of steel decking geometries,
namely re-entrant and trapezoidal types. The use of these composite slabs in building construction has increased
considerably in Malaysia in recent years. The basic advantages are:1. Cheaper transportation costs.
2. Reduced construction time.
3. Provide effective in plane bracing with the panels in place.
4. Reduced reinforcement content and in-situ concrete volume.
With the increased usage of such composite slabs, it is important to ensure the construction quality and provide basic
guidelines for good construction practice.
