2.5 Work Environment

2.5.1 Teamwork

It is all comes to good teamwork when creating a well known company. Nusapetro
have planned and organized different division to make sure the work flow to be in
perfectly manner. With varying skills and experience among the employees,
Nusapetro will be one of the companies to be on top in the oil & gas industries.

The teamwork starts when a project is received. The first division to take over the
project is the Engineers division. With guidance from the General Manager (GM)
and Senior Project Engineer, they study the Process & Instrumentation Diagram
(P&ID) and advice the clients if there is any modification needed. Once it is
approved, the draughtsman designs a General Arrangement Drawing and Skid
Structural Drawing of project. Meanwhile the engineers lists all of the materials
need for the project and pass on to the Procurements division to do the orders and
find the best deal for the company. After a few weeks, Logistics division receives the
materials and separates it into its own type to ease the process. After that,
Fabrications division along with engineers takes charge.

They build the project based on the Skid Structural Drawing and General
Arrangement Drawing which has been approved by the clients earlier. During the
fabrication process, the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) division
monitors the progress to ensure it follows correctly what the clients need. After the
base structure has completed, it undergoes certain test by QAQC before transfers out
to paint company. At the same time, the major equipments such as the tubings,
fittings, valves, pressure gauges are prepared to be install.

37

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

Painted skids arrive and all the major equipments have been installed. A Final
Acceptance Test (FAT) is conducted with the presence clients as a proof of
functionality and act as a final inspection. If the FAT is a success, then the client
accepts the complete structure with exchange of an agreed payment.

All of the division in Nusapetro are crucial as each division needs one another to
progress further. There are things that we can do by ourselves and things that we
need others to achieve it. What Nusapetro taught me is to do everything together as
one.

38

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

2.5.2 Work Ethics

A composed list of moral principles designed to each employee is what moral ethics
meant. Nusapetros work ethics was intrinsic and made to ensure the companys
functionality is at its best.

Discipline, cooperation and focus in fulfilling each tasks.

Work with integrity, confidence, and willing to learn from mistakes.

To obliged to all rules and regulations including procedures and policies

made by Nusapetro

To arrive at work on time and leave on time.

To prefer their own method based on their experience and creativity in

completing their job.

Always work together with one another as one unity creating a family work
environment.

To devote their loyalty to Nusapetro at all times.

39

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

3.0 Work Experience
3.1 Skills Gained

i)

Ability to understand engineering drawings profoundly

As the weeks of internship gone by, I have learnt a lot about engineers
life in Nusapetro. An engineer should know every pin-point details in the
P&ID, General Arrangement Drawings, and Skid Structural Materials.
These drawings are very important is it describes as a whole what the
project is all about. P&ID which stands for Process & Instrumentation
Design shows the process flow of project. P&ID give the engineers the
info where is the input and outflow of project. General Arrangement
Drawing and Skid Structural Drawing are also very important. It gives the
insight on the particular details of the structure, from the major details
into the minor details, including the dimensions and type of material used.

Figure 15. Process & Instrumentation Diagram

40

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

Figure 16. General Arrangement Drawing

ii)

Knowledge on the test conducted to prove its efficiency

All project received by Nusapetro undergoes multiple test before it is sent

to the client. One of the common tests is the Dimension Inspection (DI).
This test is conducted after the materials needed arrive such as the C
channel and I beam to make sure the dimension is the same as ordered.
DI is also conducted after the welding process to ensure its dimension is
the same as the one in General Arrangement drawing.

After that, the skid structure undergoes Non Destructive Test (NDT).
NDT is a technique that has been widely used in engineering world to
inspect the properties of material without damaging it. It is consist of
three test, Radiographic Test (RT), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI),
and Dye Penetrate Test (DPT). Nusapetro uses NDT to test the welding of
the skid structure as these weld connection have to encounter loads during
product lifetime, there is a chance it may crack if not properly weld.

41

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

If the skid structure passes NDT, then it will undergo hydrostatic test or
also known as hydrotest. Hydrotest is designed to test the strength and
leaks of pipelines or tubings. By filling it with water, the pipelines/tubings
have to endure a certain pressure requested by the clients at a certain
amount of time. At Nusapetro, they use a chart recorder to record the
pressure and temperature of water inside the pipelines/tubings thus acts as
a proof of evidence to the clients. By using 4 stage method, they fill the
waters until it reaches 25% (stage 1), 50% (stage 2) and 75% (stage 3) of
the set pressure and hold it for 5 minutes. If there is no leak or drop in the
reading of pressure gauge, then it can proceed to the next stage. On the
final stage, the pipelines/tubings is filled with 100% of the set pressure
and hold for 1 hour. If there is a leak during this stage, fix the the cause of
the leaks and start back to stage one. If stage 4 successful, then they
decrease the set pressure back to stage 3, stage 2, stage 1 and until zero
set pressure. With this method, it can help to secure the safety standards
and durability of the pipelines/tubings over time.

After hydrotest, the skid structure undergoes the last test which is the
Final Acceptance Test (FAT). FAT is conducted under supervision of
client. Of the project uses chemicals as its main component, Nusapetro
uses water for safety reasons. The main reason of FAT is to prove to the
client that the skid structure actually works according to the clients
specification. If the clients satisfied with the result from FAT, then skid
structure can be sent to the clients.

42

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

iii)

Communication skills

Good communication is essential in all company. A project can be done

when there is teamwork, teamwork can be achieved through
communication. As the past 11 weeks as an intern, I have experienced
firsthand on how to deal with clients. I was invited by my supervisor to
attend a progress meeting with clients to discuss about their projects.

Humans are not perfect hence there some clients that are tend to express
themselves emotionally rather than professionally. From there, I learn
from my supervisor the real meaning of patience and his communication
skills. First, he listens and understand the root of this problems. Then, he
explains the solution by choosing his words carefully by copying the
same term that the clients use. This shows that we understand the problem
and assures them we are on the same page.

Sometimes, not all of the terms can be understood by clients. Usually this
type of problem happens during a phone call. Hence a better way to
encounter it is by using a visual presentation or face-to-face meeting.
Prepare a whiteboard and write down the complaints from the client. This
will help them to realize the main problem and help them to get back on
track. Nusapetro also deals with clients outside of Malaysia ence a face-to
face meeting would be a problem. That is when Nusapetro exploits the
advantage of technology. With Skype, we are able to explain more detail
and accurate rather than by using a phone call.

43

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

iv)

Time Management

The most common work period in a company is from 9.00 am until 6.00
pm. Nusapetros work period is from 8.30 am until 5.30 am which is
slightly earlier, which makes them always one step forward everyday in
their work. Though what I noticed in the past 11 weeks here, they
thumbprint in before 8.30 am but leaves after 5.30 pm , sometimes they
even leave during the night.

Some people may say people who work late until night have a bad time
management, but from what I observed here, I have to disagree on that.
Nusapetro have already assigned to the employees that they can go home
after 5.30 pm, but it is their choice to stay. Honestly, all of the projects
would not be completed on time if they go back home on time. This
shows their hard work, respect, and devotion towards the company, to
stay beyond their work period. They even manage to come to work before
8.30am the next day. What I learn from them is the respect of time and
respect to the company, to always be punctual and to finish the task given
on time. Although Nusapetro is a small company, but Im convinced with
this attitude, they are not far from becoming successful in the future.

44

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (SIT) REPORT

v)

Initiative
Since Nusapetro is a small company, Im easier to learn and gain handson experience from a small team environment. I have been given
opportunity to interact with the employee on a daily basis, to know
directly on how the projects here being carried out, and help the engineers
here on completing their own assigned projects.
Though I have been given a project from my supervisor, I cant do much
if my supervisor went on training or on an off day. That is the time I take
my own initiatives to help other engineers with their project. Thus, it
expands my knowledge and understanding about engineering and also
enhances my engineering skills.

Other than engineering, I have also taken the initiative to learn more
about engineering drawings. Though Nusapetro is short of draughtsman,
they are still willing to teach me the basic skills of using SOLIDWORKS
to create an engineering drawing such as the Process & Instrumentation
Drawing (P&ID) and General Arrangement Drawing.

3.2 Knowledge
3.2.1 Understanding Job Requirement

As an intern, there is not much you can do as the projects done in Nusapetro requires
a sufficient amount of engineering skills and experience. However, I frequently stay
besides the engineers, observing and take notes every action they take and problems
they encountered. From there, I slowly manage to adapt my engineering skills.
Whenever Im in doubt, I will always ask one of the engineers first before I take my
own action.

I was given a project about a closed drain vessel pump. My supervisor gave me full
support on how to manage this project from start until finish. I listed all of the
materials required and handed over to the Procurement division as instructed from
my supervisor. By understanding my job scope, I dont have to all the ordering of
material work thus saving my time to focus on something more important.

After the materials arrived, the QAQC division conducts dimension inspection onto
the materials to give assurance to the engineers including myself that the materials
fulfill the requirements. Though it is an engineers work to install all of the
materials, my supervisor advised me to observe and only help when needed. I
understand the order given as the materials to be installed which are fittings and
tubings are small and complicated. I can easily make a mistake during determine the
right connection of fitting onto the right tubing, thus by understand my boundaries I
can avoid this kind of mistakes.

3.2.2 Completing task given on time

It is not easy to divide time if we have too many tasks to be done. Though multitasking is preferable, but completing the task beyond the deadline is much worse. In
Nusapetro, I was given a notebook and a small notes sticker to help coordinate any
tasks productively.

For an instance, time is very important in engineering world. Any mistakes could
lead to a delay in completing a project thus resulting a loss to the clients trust and
company financially. I was instructed to list all the materials needed and create
Purchase Requisition (PR) for each of the equipments within a week as we need the
materials to arrive as soon as possible. Fortunately with help from other engineers,
Im able to fulfill the task within the time period. It is important to always ask when
we are in doubt.

4.0 Discussion on Sustainability

4.1 Environmental
Environmental can be described as preventive and restoring actions. Nusapetros
location is quite strategic. Close to Chan Sow Lins Light Rail Station (LRT), the
employees can come to work by using public transport. Even some of them who lives
nearby come to work by walking. These are good alternative ways to save energy
and decreases the greenhouse gas.

Other than that, Nusapetro applies the 3R in their routine work. Recycle, Reuse and
Reduce. If they accidentally print extra copies, the unused paper will be shredded and
disposed into the recycle bin. They also provide the 3Rs bin outside of Nusapetros
yard, to show support of green earth.

4.2 Economical

After BC Petrochemical change into Nusapetro, it has to start all over again. Since
not many company recognize Nusapetro yet, thus the economy is quite slow. In
responds to this, Nusapetro requires a third party to receive a project. In other words,
Nusapetro requires other company to bid projects on behalf of them with an
exchange of payment. This temporary method is to help the name of Nusapetro to be
well known back on the oil & gas industry.

4.3 Political & Cultural Dimensions

Here in Nusapetro, we have multicultural employees, ranging from Melayu, Indian

and Indonesian. With this unity, we create a multiculture within Nusapetro. We also
usually have a feast on every Thursday to spend some time together and strengthen
our bond.

5.0 Conclusion

In a nutshell, the opportunity given by Nusapetro to undergo my internship is

well appreciated. These eleven week here have been a mind opening experience
for me to learn more about engineering and oil and gas industry. I realize now to
become an engineer is a difficult and dangerous path. Other than that, theoretical
knowledge is never enough to declare ourselves as an engineer. It is quite
different when we applied it practically. That is why experience is much more
important.
Assigned under Engineers division, I have learned a lot. Not only engineer
aspects, but also family aspects. They welcomed me with open arms and treated
me as their own family members, creating a warm working environment. Thus,
making us interns love to work here.

Lastly, I am grateful for the chance given by Nusapetro as well as Universiti

Teknologi Petronas for giving me the opportunity to experience the working
atmosphere first hand.
