• Corinth: note for its’ culture, commerce,
and corruption

• Greek mythology: Sisyphus

• The church was founded on Paul’s 2nd

missionary journey around 50-51 A.D.
• Acts 18
• 1After these things Paul departed from Athens
and went to Corinth. 2And he found a certain
Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had
recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla
(because Claudius had commanded all the Jews
to depart from Rome); and he came to them.
3So, because he was of the same trade, he
stayed with them and worked; for by occupation
they were tentmakers. 4And he reasoned in the
synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both
Jews and Greeks.
• 8Then Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue,
believed on the Lord with all his household. And
many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and
were baptized.
• 9Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a
vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not
keep silent; 10for I am with you, and no one will
attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in
this city.” 11And he continued there a year and
six months, teaching the word of God among
them.
Jesus Mission Statement
• “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
• Because He has anointed Me
• To preach the gospel to the poor;
• He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
• To proclaim liberty to the captives
• And recovery of sight to the blind,
• To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
• To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
• Luke 4:18-19
• Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the
Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we
all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a
mirror the glory of the Lord, are being
transformed into the same image from
glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the
Lord. 2 Cor.3:17-18
• “Stolen water is sweet,
• And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
• But he does not know that the dead are
there,
• That her guests are in the depths of hell.
Pr.9:17-18
• (Amp) “But he knows not the shades of death
are there, that the specters are haunting the
scenes of past transgressions”
• And He came down with them and stood on a
level place with a crowd of His disciples and a
great multitude of people from all Judea and
Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and
Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of
their diseases, as well as those who were
tormented with unclean spirits. And they were
healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch
Him, for power went out from Him and healed
them all. Luke 6:17-19
• Now it came to pass in those days that He went
out to the mountain to pray, and continued all
night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He
called His disciples to Himself; and from them
He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew
his brother; James and John; Philip and
Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James the
son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who
also became a traitor. LK.6:12-16
