The Songkran festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Years Day. It is celebrated frorn 13 to 15
April. It coincides with the New year of many calendars of south and Southeast Asian countries. It is believed
to have been adapted from the Saukranti Hindu festival. It is now observed nationwide even in the far south.
However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it lasts
for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for tourists to
visit Thailand. The most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water to other people. Thais roam
the streets with containers of water or water guns. In addition, many Thais will have small bowls of cheap beige
colored talc and mixed with water which is then smeared on the faces and bodies of random passers by as a
blessing for the new year. City officials close off many sections of the street for the festival.
Besides the throwing of water, people celebrate Songkran by going to a wat (Buddhist monastery) to pray
and give food to monks. They also cleanse Buddha images in the household shrines as well as Buddha images at
monasteries by gently pouring water mixed with a Thai fragrance over them. It is believed that doing this will bring
good luck and prosperity in the New Year. In many cities, such as Chiang Mai, the Buddha images from all of
the city's important monasteries are paraded through the streets so that people can toss water at them, ritually
'bathing' the images as they pass by.

Tiwah is a typical funeral ceremony of Dayak tribe in Central Kalimantan. The ceremony is also known as
the biggest sacred ceremony. It is intended to deliver the soul or spirit of a dead man or also known as
Salumpuk Liau toward heaven as his final resting place (Lewu Liau). It is also to discharge misfortunes for the
family left behind and to untie the status of widow or widower of the wife or husband. According to Kaharingan,
a traditional belief of Dayak tribe, the spirit of the deceased will remain on earth and will not get in heaven (Lewu
Liau) without going through Tiwah ceremony.
Tiwah ceremony requires substantial funds to provide the offerings in the form of animals, such as cows,
buffaloes, pigs, and chickens. The beheading tradition for the Tiwah ceremony was stopped in 1894, and was
replaced by a cow's or a buffalo's head. Even so, the symbol of human head remains in the ceremony in the
form of coconut.
For Dayak people, Tiwah ceremony should be performed to show honor to their ancestors despite the great

Held annually as a community celebration, Dieng festival presents various art and cultural performances.

anak gembel/gimbal).
The Festival features Dieng's own distinct traditional art forms such as the Rodad Dance, Lengger Dance,
Rampak Yakso, Warokan, Barongsai. Cakil Dance, and Wayang Kulit or Javanese leather puppet show.

dreadlock is a mystical feature which only occurs in children. According to local belief, these kids are somehow
chosen by their ancestors to hold these gifts, and that the dreadlock must not be trimmed until the children ask
for it. The precious moments when these dreadlocks are shaven are celebrated in a series of ritual ceremonies
known as the ruwatan anak gimbal.
The ceremonies are started with the procession of the dreadlock kids around the village. They are paraded
on Javanese traditional horse drawn carriage or Dokar guarded by Manggala Yudha or royal troops and followed
by various traditional art processions. Then they are taken to the Arjuna Temple in the Dieng Temple complex
where the ritual of the dreadlock hair cutting will take place. Subsequently, the hair will be taken to the lake and

had to give the puppies away when they were old enough.
Prissy had her last litter of puppies in April 2013. She was taking care of her puppies but she kicked Gizmo out and
wouldn't feed him. My mom found him at our back step and brought him in. He was so small he fit in the palm of
her hand. He had no fur on his tail and his feet were flat. You couldn't even see if there were holes in his ears.
It took us about two weeks to name him because we didn't think he was going to live. He reminded me of
Gizmo on the movie Gremlins so that's what we named him. He is strong and healthy and very special to me .

Funeral ceremony is the most complicated and expensive event in Toraja society. Only nobles in the Aluk
religion have the right to have an extensive death feast. Generally. The death feast of a nobleman is attended by
a lot of people and carried out for several days. The ceremonial site structures are specially made by the
deceased family in a large, grassy field with a shelter for audiences.
Other than crying and wailing, the Torajan expresses sorrow with music, funeral chants, songs and poems.
The ritual is often held for weeks, months, or years after the death, until the deceased's family had raised a
significant amount of money needed for the funeral expenses.
Traditionally, Torajans believe that death is not a sudden event, but a gradual process toward Puya (the
land of souls, or after life). The body of the deceased is wrapped in several layers of cloth and kept under the
tongkonan during this waiting period. Until the funeral ceremony is completed the soul of the deceased is
