Christmas in the Mission

The mood and spirit of Christmas are very special. People are kinder, most feel
greater love towards their fellow man, generosity and giving abound, forgiveness comes easier,
and we all feel closer to our beloved Savior. Most of us will have the privilege of actually being in
the mission field at Christmas time only once or twice in our lifetime. It is a unique experience
associated with, perhaps, some mixed feelings. On the one hand, it can be somewhat
challenging to be separated from family and friends at such a fun-filled, happy time of year. On
the other hand, never again will Christmas have a deeper meaning, never again will you feel
closer to our Heavenly Father, never again will it be so special to see someone baptized, never
again will you experience such deep-seated joy at serving the Savior as you do as a full-time
missionary at Christmas time.
You will have some memorable and special events occur which can take place
only in the mission field. The members will feed you and lavish much loving attention over los
misioneros who are so dear to them. You will experience the culture and customs of a foreign
country at Christmas timethus enriching your culture bank. You will feel closer to your
companions, district, zone and, hopefully, mission president/wife because they represent your
family away from home. You will read the real Christmas story with unusual passion and love for
the Christ child. You will feel special love and gratitude for those from home who have done so
much to bless your life. The receiving of a large number of presents probably wont occur and you
wont mind because you know it is just stuffjust a thing. You will learn a whole new Christmas
vocabulary much of which will stay with you for the rest of your life. You will sing Christmas carols in
your mission tongueand think about those carols in Spanish whenever you sing them in English
after the mission. You will attend Christmas concerts and fiestas in your ward or branch and eat
exotic, new, and unusual foods. You will experience a host of new candies and sweetssome of
which you will actually like. You will teach the missionary discussions with more passion and fervor
than ever before and testify more powerfully of Christs reality and the blessing His atonement
brings. When you read Isaiah 9:6, you will understand it more thoroughly and praise God for the
special privilege of spending---Christmas in the Mission: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful,
Counselor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Hermana Dayton and I
wish you a very Merry Christmas and marvelous 2016!!!

Alertness vs. Carelessness

Alertness is being aware of what is taking place around me so I can have the right responses. It is exercising my
physical and spiritual senses to recognize the dangers that could diminish the resources entrusted to me. Every
physical sense has a corresponding spiritual sense. Through our physical senses we can be alert to the physical world,
and through our spiritual senses we are able to understand the spiritual world. This week we will discuss our physical
senses.
Set a strong guard about thy outward senses: these are Satans landing places, especially the eye and the ear.
William Gurnall
Time is a limited resource that is extended only by giving the first part back to God.
I have ever found it, when I have thought the battle was over and the conquest gained, and so let down my watch,
the enemy had risen up and done me the greatest injury. David Brainerd
A thief can steal in a moment, but the watchman must watch all night. Sin can undo in an unguarded second the
character which required years to form. Charles H. Spurgeon
How can we develop greater alertness?
1.
2.
3.
4.

Recognize that we are in perpetual warfare.

Realize that our enemy is a master of deception.
Ask God for spiritual understanding.
Understand that life involves cause-and-effect sequences.

How can we apply alertness in missionary work?

-Looking for and praising ways that my companion and other missionaries have displayed
good character.
-Sensing that seemingly harmless activities could lead to disobedience and loss of the Spirit.
-Being aware that participation in certain activities and wearing certain clothing could attract
the wrong attention and weaken the trust of leaders.
-Being aware of how your investigators are receiving the lessons.
-In the Missionary Handbook it says, Being sensitive to anything that is out of the ordinary, especially anyone who
watches you closely or asks probing questions.
President Dayton and I love you very much. We want you to be alert each day so you will be safe.
We sincerely wish each of you a memorable, meaningful Christmas!!!
Hermana Dayton
This week we received the information on the following slides from Sister Ryser, our Assistant Area Medical Advisor. She
asked that we pass it on to you.

There are 5 secrets to Persuasiveness in missionary work:
1.
A clear conscience- it is important that we have a clear conscience, know we have
repented of our sins, and can be examples to those we teach. We are then able to convince
others to repent and come unto Christ. When it comes to convincing others, our lives are more
persuasive than our words. We are all missionariesWherever we go,
we either bring people nearer to Christ, or we repel them from Christ.Eric Lidell
2.
The authority of Scripture- we must learn the scriptures so we can teach by them and
persuade our investigators to use them to draw nearer to Heavenly Father.
3.
Personal testimony- You cannot convert people beyond your own conversion. PMG We
must be able to persuasively testify. Convincing people requires a confidence in our voices that
matches the truth and love in our hearts.

4.
Appealing to the conscience- in order to appeal to the conscience we must ask inspired
questions to understand our investigators and analyze what they truly need. People usually have
two questions in their minds (1) Why is this important for me to hear? (2) How can I apply it to my
life? Our first words should be able to answer these questions
to persuade them that our message will benefit them.
5.
The effectiveness of using gracious words- Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned
with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every manColossians 4:6 As we use kind,
persuasive words, and avoid contention, we are able to bring others to Christ.
We can apply persuasiveness to missionary work by:
-Persuading others to get friends and family involved in missionary work.
-Persuading our companions to be strictly obedient.
-Persuading family and friends to stay focused on living the principles of the gospel.
-Writing and speaking our testimonies, persuading others of the truthfulness of the gospel.
President Dayton and I are very grateful to each of you for the Christ-like lives you have chosen to
live. We love to hear you teach and testifypersuading others to come unto Christ. We love you
very much and feel grateful and honored to be working with you as we faithfully serve our
Heavenly Father.
Sincerely,
Hermana Dayton

The Miracle of Baptism

This past week came with

quite a few miracles. On
Thursday we went to a small
town called Prat de Compte
up on the mountains. It has a
population of 105 Inhabitants
and is about a half an hour
away. We visited a family from
El Salvador. They are a young
married couple with a five year
old girl. Samuel, the father and
Cecilia, the mother have been
investigating for about a year
off and on. Samuel has always
been hard to teach because
of his intense integration in the
Catholic Church and our
Thursday visited started much
the same as before. As the
lesson progressed conversation
changed to eternal families
and then a miracle happened.
Cecilia and Samuel both
expressed desires to be
baptized and I gave them a
practice interview. They bore
beautiful testimony of Joseph
Smith and of Thomas S.
Monson. We then invited them
to be baptized for that
Saturday. Samuel's mom, lida
was present for the practice
interview and when we
finished she said that she too
wanted to be baptized
Saturday Two days later they
were baptized. lida's husband
is a recent convert and so now
there are two more active
families with priesthood here in
the group. Both couples have
the goal to be sealed in the
temple next January .We are
hoping to find a few more
people to be baptized in the
upcoming weeks and the
members are excited to help.

Our miracle of the week...

We recently just found out this
women that had been coming
to church for 2 weeks is in our
area! So we met with her right
after church. First off she has
already been coming to
church and coming to almost
every ward activity. So it just
couldn't get better. Well we
met with her Sunday and set a
baptism date with her for the
26th of December. She
accepted and loved the first
lesson. Well it gets better... We
met with her again last night
and asked her if she had read
the Book of Mormon. She said
yea I'm in chapter 7! What....
We were astonished! Not only
that she shared with us that the
Book of Mormon answers all
her questions and than went
on to give us an example. She
came here to study for school
and that's the visa she applied
for. Well unfortunately she said
something went wrong and
the visa won't let her study...
She than explain that it was just
like Nephi. That God sent
Nephi out into the wilderness
and they didn't know why. But
God had a plan for them to
get the plates and leave
because Jerusalem would be
destroyed. She says, I came
here to study but that's not
happening and the reason
God lead me here was to find
his church. Wow. I have never
felt the spirit so strong in my life
and someone with such a
good grasp of the gospel. It is
truly been incredible teaching
her.

President we had a great

baptism this last of Antonio.
Everything didn't go as
planned but it worked and I
was very happy. As we
started to fill up the font the
water was not getting warm.
It was starting to get into
panic time but I just said a
quick prayer and I had the
peace and calm
confirmation that everything
will be ok. As the service
started miracles started to
happen. The Zone Leaders
went out of the church for a
second and saw a lady
looking at the church sign
and they invited her to
come in. It was crazy. We
also had some great people
giving talks, some great
testimonies. After the service
was where some great work
happened. We had some
great members stay after
and just talk to him and love
him.

The Miracle of Baptism

The miracles this week was a
lesson with Barbara! Barbara
is 74 and probably one of my
best friends here in Spain! She
lost her husband about 3
months ago and we found
her as we were knocking
doors one day. She was
practically in tears when we
found her but smiling said,
"How did you angels know to
come visit Barbara today?
Did God send you here to my
door?" We testified to her that
He knows exactly who she is
and what she is going
through. She loves every
single thing we teach her and
LOVED the restoration and
told us she knew it was all
true. She came to church
and talked to pretty much
every single member and
then told us afterwards that
she knew it was true.
Hermana _______ and I went
to teach her the plan of
salvation this past week. We
told her it was a present for
her and manuel (her
husband). When we got to
the spirit world I started crying
and couldnt even talk. The
spirit in the room was so
strong and I knew that what
we were teaching Barbara
was true. I knew that Manuel
was in the Spirit world at this
very moment listening to and
accepting the same
message that Barbara was
listening to. I told Barbara this
and tears came to her eyes
and she looked at me and
said, "Puedo dar un besito a
manuel ahora?" (can I give
manuel a little kiss right now?)
I nodded my head and she
blew a kiss to the air and said,
"I want to be with you forever

my sweet manuel". It was

probably one of the most spiritual While street contacting we
