Wastewater Treatment Challenges and Opportunities

Approximatively 50-80 per cent of untreated

sewage is disposed in water bodies.

Urgent need for affordable and sustainable

wastewater systems in line with the socioeconomic needs of communities.

Today, Indian cities have the opportunity to

reinvent sewage paradigms, simply because

they have not yet built infrastructures.

Cities can leapfrog into new, affordable and

sustainable ways of treating wastewater.

Conventional Sewage Treatment Plants

Wastewater management has

traditionally focused on creating
centralized systems of sewerage
networks.

Requires the building of infrastructures,

pipelines and sewage treatment plants
(STPs).

The capital cost for conventional STPs are mostly met out of grant funding.

Operation and maintenance (O&M) expenses need to be generated by the

urban local body at most times.

Conventional technologies are thus natural resource intensive (use water first

to flush, then to carry the waste), but also capital and energy intensive.

Decentralized Wastewater Treatment (DWWT)

Treatment systems constructed in a fabrication plant and transported

to a site for installation and commissioning.

Strong demand for packaged WWT Systems especially for industrial,

commercial and residential sectors.

Growth in the food and beverage and construction industries, rapid

urbanization is increasing demand for packaged wastewater treatment.

Affordable prices, compact design, quick fabrication time and easy

operation and maintenance (O&M) are also increasing penetration
rate.
