Diabetes mellitus
Role of homoeopathic medicines
Abroma augusta
It is an excellent remedy where the quantity of sugar is excessive and the urine is
loaded with high specific gravity: Patient passes large quantity of clear urine at
night, excessive thirst, insomnia and prostration are other marked features. Patient
is averse to do any physical or mental labor.
Aceticum acidum
It is also a valuable remedy for diabetes. Profuse urination, urine pale, intense
thirst, hot dry skin and profound debility.
Phosphoricum acidum
Diabetes due to nervous strains. Urine increased, milky in color and contains much
sugar. Diabetes due to long lasting grief, worries and anxiety, for those who are
apathetic, poor in mental and physical strength. Diabetes with great debility and
bruised feeling in muscles, loss of appetite, increased thirst and patient may be
having boils over the body. Urine passed in large quantities, pale, colorless. Face is
pale, sick looking, eyes are sunken and surrounded by dark bluish rings. Sexual
power deficient.
Argentum metallicum
Urine is profuse, turbid and of sweet odour. Micturition is frequent and copious
especially at night, anxiety and pressure in the pit of the stomach, want of breath.
Argentum nitricum
Diabetes of nervous and gastric origin in patients who are mentally and physically
exhausted.
PAGE 41
Dried emaciated persons due to long continued mental work. Craving for sweets.
Nervous, impulsive, want to do things in a hurry. Intolerance of heat. Dyspepsia,
belching accompanies all gastric complaints. Profuse urination, impotence, irregular
blotches over the skin.

Arsenicum album
Hepatic origin of diabetes due to chronic alcoholism. Horrible thirst, emaciation and
exhaustion with hallucination, tendency to boils, pruritus vulvae skin dry,
emaciation and great mental and physical restlessness. Diabetic gangrene.
Bryonia alba
No other remedy has such dryness of the lips as a symptom of hepatic disorders as
Bryonia has, and this is often one of the first symptoms of diabetes. There is a
persistent bitter taste in mouth. Patient is languid, morose, dispirited. Patient
emaciates and may lose strength due to inability to eat.
Cephalandra indica
It is a great homoeopathic drug for Diabetes mellitus, associated with biliousness,
abscess, boils and carbuncles, profuse urination making the patient weak with
dryness of mouth and considerable thirst, often worse after urination. The whole
body "burns like fire", relieved by cold bathing,
Coca
Diabetes mellitus with impotence. No appetite except for sweets.
Codeinum
Great thirst, with desire for bitter substances.
Gymnema sylvestre
It is confidently accepted as a sovereign remedy for diabetes by experienced
homeopaths. The features are: urine is loaded with sugar, after passing urine
patient feels extremely weak.
PAGE 42
Profuse urination, passes several times a day and in copious quantity. There is a
burning all over the body, boils and carbuncle appearing anywhere on body. Drinks
water often in large quantity. Sexual power gone or lost. Profuse urination after
sexual intercourse.
Helonias dioica
Dull gloomy and irritable; melancholy; impotence; pain and lameness in the back;
numb feet. 'Patient is better when kept busy'; Urine albuminous, phosphatic,
profuse and clear, contains sugar. Used in tincture or 3rd potency. Constant aching
and tenderness over kidneys.
Insulinum

If it is administered at suitable intervals in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, it

maintains the blood sugar level and keeps the urine sugar free. But overdosage is
followed by weakness and fatigue and tremulousness and profuse sweating.
Iodium
It shows almost all the classical symptoms of Diabetes, unquenchable thirst,
voracious appetite with steadily increasing emaciation, hepatic and gastric troubles,
increased urination, tendency to eruption and boils, great debility, slightest effort
induces perspiration. Diabetes due to pancreatic diseases. Urine acrid, thick, with
cuticle on the surface.
Kreosotum
Pruritus vulvae; violent itching of vulva and vagina, worse when urinating. Urine
offensive. Gangrene. Great emaciation and putrid odour from the mouth. Impotence
Lacticum acidum
Diabetes due to gastro-hepatic disorders, copious urination, urine light yellow,
thirst, nausea, weakness, voracious appetite and constipation, dry skin and tongue,
also occasional gastralagia are the commonly presenting symptoms.
PAGE 43
Lycopodium clavatum
Excessive urination, sexual desire and power gone; Pulmonary T.B. with hectic
fever. Marked emaciation with profound debility in morning. Dryness of mouth,
tongue dry, black, cracked, with bad odour from mouth. Desire for sweets. Diabetes
due to gastric disorder and hepatic diseases. Polyuria during night, Pruritus vulvae,
numbness in limbs; hands and feet go numb with tearing pain in limbs especially
while at rest (intermittent claudications). Skin prone to ulceration.
Phosphorus
Diabetes due to Pancreatic diseases especially in tubercular and gouty
constitutions; frequent, abundant urination and tendency to skin eruptions.
Plumbum metallicum
Lowness of spirits, anxiety and melancholy, diminished vision, dryness of mouth,
dry cracked tongue, suppuration of lungs, hectic fever, impotence, gangrene.
According to Dr. Hering it is the most important remedy for Diabetes.
Syzygium jambolanum
It is capable of reducing the amount of sugar in the urine, especially when used in
tincture form or very low trituration, great thirst, weakness, emaciation. Patient

passes large quantity of urine of high specific gravity, old ulcers of skin: diabetic
ulceration.
Uranium nitricum
Diabetes due to gastric derangement, dyspepsia. It has polyuria, polydipsia,
dryness of mouth and skin. It is said that if given in 3 X trituration, it lessens the
sugar and the quantity of the urine. The patient, inspite of good appetite and thirst,
emaciates. For all the complications of diabetes, such as diabetic nephropathy,
degeneration of liver, high blood pressure and dropsy: unable to retain the urine
without pain. Impotence.

Some case report
Carbuncle
B. bhaduri, l.m. s.
Case 1
Aged 56 years. Suffering from Diabetes since last August, he has had a few
eruptions of boils; just now there is one such boil on the right arm and a whitlow on
the right ring finger. Gets up three or four times at night to make water.
Acid Phos, 12th, Morning and evening.
10th Sept. The boil on the right arm has suppurated and occupies an area of about
3 inches diameter; the whitlow is much better now: there is a large Carbuncle on the
left of the spine, about two and half inches below the angle of the scapula.
20th Sept. The carbuncle on the back has become very large having a diameter of
about four to five inches. A large slough came out of the boil in the arm leaving a
hole which appears to be a very deep one, discharges a large quantity a matter. The
whitlow on the finger does not also show any sign of drying up.
10th Oct. Ever since the last report, the patient was treated by an AssistantSurgeon Homeopathically, who gave him Silicea 6th; an opening is formed a little
below the center, from which a large quantity of an acrid matter comes out. Inspite
of this suppuration the area of the Carbuncle is gradually increasing. The patient
gets fever every afternoon; there is severe pain which keeps the patient awake at
night. Arsenic 12th, morning and evening.

24th Oct. The fever is yet coming every day, though with less intensity. The spread
of the Carbuncle seems to be arrested, but the pain as troublesome as ever.
Character of the discharge same.
PAGE 56
The ulcer in the arm is discharging less; the finger also appears to be better.
Arsenic 12 to be continued; one dose of Ars. 200. at night for the nightly
aggravation of the pain.
15th Nov. Seems to be improving. The pus collects in the depending portion, where
there is a bag-like swelling in consequence, two or three openings are about to form
on this dependent spot. The cores are distinctly visible, but no discharge yet from
these openings. The patient cannot lie down on his back on account of this swelling.
On the whole, he is improving though the fever is not entirely gone. Aggravation of
the burning after sleep.
Lachesis 30. Morning and evening.
1st Dec. The acrid nature of the matter seems to have changed for the better. A
large slough came out of the carbuncle which has at once given a different aspect
to the wound. After discharging of matter there is a distinct hollow, and the ribs are
to be plainly felt. The patient is also more comfortable. Fever almost gone. Silicea
12th morning and evening.
From this time the patient went on improving at a rapid rate. By the end of the
month he has made a little accession to his blood, and his paleness had much
improved.
Case 2
Babu, aged 48 years, occupation, priest. The patient has been suffering from
Diabetes since the last four years. Our native system of treatment brought a good
deal of relief, but he was never cured. About two months ago he noticed a small
cyst in the center of the interscapular region; this gradually increased till it carne to
about the size of a pigeon's egg. About ten or twelve days ago, a little boil was
noticed below the left angle of the scapula, which, gradually increasing in size, has
assumed the appearance of a large Carbuncle. In the course of a week or ten days
three others appeared. One on the right side below the scapula, and two a few
inches below the upper two. At the present time pus is being discharged from the
left upper Carbuncle, but the others look like flat swellings of a bluish- red color.
PAGE 58
There are a number of openings on the left upper one. The discharge from this is
yellowish white and acrid as a number of pustules have cropped up below the

Carbuncle over which the pus flows in the exit from the opening. There is severe
burning stinging and throbbing pain in all the four swellings. The patient was a very
robust looking healthy man, but is now very much reduced.
Gets fever in the afternoon every day which leaves him towards the latter part of
the night with a little perspiration. The patient says that after sleep the pain in the
Carbuncle increases very much.
Lachesis 30, morning and evening.
Poultice on the suppurating Carbuncle.
l5th September, 1879. The same as yesterday. Cont.
16th the same; pulse 108 just now; had fever as usual yesterday afternoon. It came
with a little chill, but the heat was very long lasting and troublesome. There was
severe burning and thirst which increased at night. Patient's attendant says that he
drank water frequently, but very small quantity at a time.
Arsenic 12th, morning and evening.
17th. The fever yesterday was not so intense but otherwise same, discharge of pus
same; the other 3 carbuncles have been reducing in size. Cont.
18th. Same as before; cont. till patient reported well. Treatment stopped.
Diabetic retinopathy
by jonathan shore, m.d.
Case 1
The numbers in brackets indicate the underlying for symptom emphasis.-Ed.
The point of this case is twofold. One is to draw attention to the effect of Rhus-tox
upon the vision, and, by interference upon the contents of the eyeball. The other is
to remark upon the depth and rapidity of action of the correct remedy even in fairly
low potency.
The patient is a 38 year old male with insulin dependant diabetes mellitus. He has
been under homeopathic care since 1983. At the initial visit, he presented with
severe diabetic retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy which included impotence,
and rectal spasms.
PAGE 59
He was quite blind in the right eye secondary to retinal detachment. There had
been so much laser surgery to the left eye that, despite continued intra-ocular
hemorrhages, further intervention was contraindicated.

Treatment commenced with Sulphur 30c. he responded well and this remedy has
been the mainstay of treatment to this point. In the past year he has received two
10 - day courses of the 12c. Of interest is that at the very beginning he responded
to the Sulphur by producing retinal hemorrhages (Kent page 235 retinal
hemorrhage) with a 7 day periodicity (p 1391). His visual acuity has fluctuated over
the years but is apparently much greater than predicted given his history.
9/25/87
Last remedy was Sulph 12c daily for 10 days in February. Has been well except for
a slump in June/July.
Nausea and the morning [2].
Sugar is hard to control [l], very high desire in the morning.
Pimples [l] on scalp, ears and neck.
Eyes are doing well.
Exercising a lot [2], running, weights, ocean kayaking.
Stiff in the mornings [2]; stiffness in the muscles [2]; aggravated after sitting in a
chair [2]. The biceps [2] are stiff.
Feet are cold [l]. Desires milk.
On further direct questioning he admitted to being rather depressed in the sense
that he was experiencing all life's demands as a struggle and effort. He felt he
lacked "joie de vivre".
Rhus-tox. 12c daily for 10 days.
Follow Up 10/23/87
Six hours after the initial dose of remedy the muscle pains disappeared. The
nausea was gone.
" Sleep interrupted with fitful tossing and tunings and much talking in my sleep. My
dreams become filled with struggles and fighting scenes, and flight or escape. After
two weeks I began to sleep better and am now having dreams of vivid sexual
contact, something which has not occurred for years."
PAGE 60
"My right eye, which has regained some sight through homeopathic treatments,
went through a period of upheaval after taking the remedy. The eye began to jump
and vibrate and I was seeing new fracture lines within its depths. This was dizzying
and disorienting! Suddenly the eye focussed and I realized that I was able to read

the small print on a poster across the room. Since this time I have been able to see
very small- print without the aid of my heavy duty magnifying glasses."
These are the rubrics under Vision in which this remedy appears:
Blurred [2].
Colors, before the eyes; black; spots; floating [2]
Confused [2].
Foggy, evening [1].
Hemiopia [1].
Loss of vision; vertigo during [1].
Nearer, Objects seem [l].
I feel his description of his vision during the crises corresponds well to the rubric
"Confused."

Clinical verification of hypoglycemic effects of cephalandra indica in patients of
diabetes mellitus
Dr. d.p. rastogi
Director, central council for research in homoeopathy, new delhi.
Summary
A study was undertaken to clinically verify the hypoglycemic effects of Cephalandra
indica on patients of Diabetes mellitus. Selection of Cephalandra indica for the trial
is based upon its hypoglycemic activity observed in 'in vivo' trials conducted on
albino rats by Central Council for Research in Homeopathy. Study was limited to
patients of non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus. The patients are given
Cephalandra indica Q in doses of 1 drop/body weight, per day, (in divided doses)"
and blood and urine sugar levels are monitored at frequent intervals. It was
observed that Cephalandra indica Q helped in fairly large number of Diabetes
mellitus cases in reducing and stabilizing blood sugar levels, without any toxicity or
side effects.
Introduction
A project has been undertaken under C.C. R.H. to clinically verify the hypoglycemic
effects of Cephalandra indica on patients of diabetes mellitus (N.I. D.D. ). The

project was started in 1986 after observing the results of experiments conducted at
Drug standardization unit of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy.
Experimental studies have revealed that regular administration of the drug
Cephalandra Indica Q and Absinthium D 1 Resina Larices D3 exhibited perceptible
hypoglycemic activity at a micro dose level ranging from 25 u ml to 75u ml/100 gm
body weight (b. w through an I. P. Route of administration.)
PAGE 62
Syzygium jambolanum Q has been found toxic at dose level of 50um1/100 gm b.w.
Abroma augusta Q has mild hypoglycemic effect in doses of 50 u ml to 01 ml, yet is
does not stabilize blood sugar level corresponding to such activity.
Cephalandra Indica Q did not show any toxicity and had shown stabilizing effect on
blood sugar level after the withdrawal of the drug.
Cephalandra indica, a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, is a perennial herb. It
possessed the reputation of being an excellent remedy in reducing the amount of
sugar in the urine of patients suffering from Diabetes Mellitus and mitigating their
other sufferings.
Symptomatology
Diabetes mellitus and insipidus, billiousness, bilious complaints, poisonous boil.
abscess, and carbuncle, burning pains all over the body, profuse urination,
giddiness, dysentery, white and bloody; headache owing to excessive exposure
under sun's rays; chronic fever associated with burning of eyes, face and other
parts of body; dropsy, jaundice, flatulence, hemorrhage from the stomach; bloodpoisoning.
Mind - Moroseness; fretfulness; disinclination to do any work.
Head - Giddiness, worse after urination.
Face - Redness of face with burning.
Eyes - Burning of Eyes.
Mouth - Excessive dryness of mouth with great thirst for large quantities
of water at a time, worse after urination.
Throat - Dryness of throat.
Appetite - Loss of appetite.
Abdomen - Full of wind and distended.

Urine - Passage of copious quantity of urine at a time; clear urine, exhaustion

and weakness after urination; presence of sugar in urine.
PAGE 63
Stool - Greenish, mucous stools mixed or tinged with blood, pain before and
during stool.
Sensations - Burning sensation exists all over the body, ameliorated by anything
cold or cold applications.
Generalities - Over-sensitiveness to noise and external impressions.
Material and method
A study of 146 cases (M65 F18) was done on patient of varying age groups (See
Table I). All these cases were recorded on the prescribed proforma which includes
presenting complaints, physical and mental generals, general physical examination,
systemic physical examination fundoscopic examination of eyes, urine analysis and
blood sugar level (fasting and post prandial) estimation, (Table II) before starting the
treatment. (The cases having either paucity of characteristic symptoms or were
having symptomatology of Cephalandra Indica Q. were included in the study.). Each
patient was given diet chart and advised to take full diet precautions and to do
exercises regularly. Blood sugar level was tested after every level for assessment of
hypoglycemic effect of Cephalandra Indica Q. The drug was given to all these cases
according to their body weight (one drop/kg b.w. / per day). Blood sugar level of
each patient was monitored every two weeks.
Results
Each case was observed for a minimum period of 6 months to 3 years and
improvement indices were prepared (see Table III). Out of 146 cases, 46 cases did
report after the first visit, another 20 cases are still under observation. Out of rest of
the 80 cases, 64 cases have shown improvement after the intake of Cephalandra
indica Q. in which 35 cases had marked improvement, 24 cases moderate
improvement and 5 mild improvement.
Inference
The study conducted shows that Cephalandra Indica does possess the
hypoglycemic effect as shown by reduction in sugar levels of the patients (See Table
V) and it also helps in mitigating the sufferings of the patients (See Table VI)
PAGE 64

Fundoscopy of patients was done before starting the treatment and also during the
treatment. In one patient Grade 1 retinopathic changes disappeared after 4 months
of treatment.
As such no patient reported about any toxic effect of this drug.
PAGE 65
Geriatric problems
(special reference to diabetes)
Dr. kamal kansal
GERIATRICS IS THE BRANCH of medical science that deals with old age and its
problems. Curiously, the word 'Geriatrics' seems to resemble in sound the Sanskrit
word 'Jara' meaning old age. Could one therefore hazard the guess that the word
'Geriatrics' seems to originate from the Sanskrit word 'Jara' ? In my view, such a
conclusion does not seem to be far fetched.
Cataract and eye troubles
Failing sight is inevitable; commonest cause is cataract; in early stages the process
may be arrested and cured by the correct Homeopathic approach, while neglected
cases need surgery. Calc. Flour 12x Four times daily with Phosphorus 2~0 once a
week or fortnight with external application of Cineraria. Maritima Eyedrops has
preventive as well as curative role. Glaucoma, Entropion (inward turning of
eyelashes). For the former Bell., Gels, Phos, Spigelia according to symptoms may be
used while latter is often relieved by Borax.
CASE (I) Mrs. K. Kaur, widow 60 years, came with almost total failure of vision, a
diagnosed case of cataract. She was put on Conium 200 one Dose, Calc. Fluor 12x 3
times a day with Cineraria eyedrops twice daily into both eyes. The treatment was
continued with astonishing improvement. In November 1980, after 7 months of
regular treatment, she could see like a normal person. She is now 75 and living a
normal life.
CASE (II) Mr. G. Singh 58, a tailer came with the problem of watering and irritation
in eyes and photophobia after cataract operation for operation of eyes and aftereffects, Ledum 200 twice a day was prescribed and was continued for 6 weeks with
Euphrasia eye drops for local application.
PAGE 66
PAGE 67

After one week, patient showed improvement and watering became less, with no
irritation and two weeks later photophobia was also removed. He can now see,
thanks to Homoeopathy.
Stroke
Paralysis of parts of the body following cerebral tumor, Hemorrhage or thrombosis.
Arnica Montana helps in absorbing the hemorrhage or thrombus. Heloderma with
feeling of part being frozen cold. Belladonna with much flushing of face, throbbing
carotids, headache and violence. Aconite in early stages with much fear
restlessness, and thirst. Baryta Carb with arteriosclerosis and child like behavior.
Opium is useful to prevent a threatened attack. Glonoine is useful for threatened
attack with headache and fullness of the heart.
Case-My aunt, aged 63 years, had an attack of Hemiplegia on 13th Dec., 1984
(complete left side, including face). She was put on usual allopathic drugs. She was
an old diabetic and was hypertensive. She was in Aligarh. On being informed I could
see her on the third day. She was without any improvement. She said that when she
had the attack, the very first feeling she had was as if her whole left side of body
was in ice. Extensive feeling of coldness in left side; hands and feet, as if frozen. It
immediately reminded me of this drug. Which has the following prominent
symptoms:
- Benumbing Paralysis
- Arctic Coldness of the parts involved
- Numbness
- Feels cold as in ice
- Craves constant heat and warmth.
Heloderma 200, three times daily, was given; all allopathic medicines were
stopped. There was quick and remarkable improvement, so much so she attended
my grandfather's funeral in Delhi just after 27 days of the attack. She is perfectly
normal now, with normal muscular power in limbs. No deviation of mouth is left. She
is also non-hypertensive and her blood sugar is normal (effect on sugar metabolism
is yet to be ascertained). She is now taking the remedy on every alternate day.
(Case published' in Homoeopathic Prestige Vol. l June 1985 No. 178 "Heloderma: A
minor remedy of major importance".)
PAGE 68
PAGE 69
Senile gangrene

The grave condition most frequently affects the great toe, is often cured
astonishingly quickly by Secale cor 200 twice daily. which is the, perfect simillimum
many times.
CASE-Mr. Kapoor, aged 48 yrs. a person of great dynamic personality, a strong
follower of Homeopathy, a chronic smoker, diabetic, developed violent burning pain
in both lower limbs, more at rest after prolonged walking with cramps; legs
shriveled and became cold yet he could not cover them (Raunaud's Phenomena),
got investigated in Safdarjang Hospital, Delhi and was diagnosed Burger's Disease
in July, 1985, was admitted and advised Amputation of both legs below knees. On
account of presentation Secale Cor 200 was given to him for a few weeks with
astonishing early response to the extent that we could save him from the ravages of
the disease. Though he is still diabetic but controlled with oral hypoglycemic
therapy only, is otherwise fine and has resumed office.

The theory
The basic living unit of the body is the cell and each organ is actually an
aggregation of many different cells held together by intercellular structures. Each
type of cell is specially adopted to perform a particular function, for instance, the
Red Cells, 25 trillion in all, transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues. The entire
body contains about 75 trillion cell and almost all cells have the ability to further
reproduce in the event of destruction of some of them.
Biochemistry deals with formation and decomposition of cells of living organisms.
The system of tissue remedies deals with the inorganic salts in the cells of human
body.
The blood and the tissues of the body consists of Water (70%), Organic matter
(25%) and Inorganic salts (5%). An imbalance of even the small quantity of
inorganic salts produces conditions of disease.
Inorganic salts are the real tissue builder, the architect of organisms. Their vitality,
functioning and structure depend upon their proper quantity and distribution in
every cell.
HEALTH is a state when all the cells in various tissues are in a normal condition and
they continue to be healthy as long as they are receiving the requisite quantity of
the different cell salts required for the building of different tissues.
PAGE 11

DISEASE is an altered state of the cell produced by some irregularity in the supply
to the cell of an inorganic salt. Imperfect cell's action results in malfunctioning of
tissues and in turn some organs, producing the phenomena of disease.
CURE consists of restoring the normal cell growth by furnishing a minimal dose of
the inorganic substance whose molecular motion has been disturbed resulting in the
disease. It is known as NATURAL LAW that by supplying these lacking salts an
equilibrium will be established and the diseased organ will also be restored to
normal condition and functioning.
A mineral-rich diet is no insurance against diseases resulting from mineral
deficiency. Even with a well-balanced diet, rich in minerals, vitamins and trace
elements, the body sometimes fails to assimilate these substances. In such
circumstance the tissue salts in their potentised form are able to bridge the gap and
restore the molecular imbalance that may be impeding the nutritional process.
Assimilation can then proceed in a normal manner, and the body should be able to
obtain all the nutrients it needs from the foods eaten. The minerals present in the
food are mostly compounds and the digestive process renders these into
assimilable factors. The tissue salts, however, require no breaking down and are
immediately assimilated. This is a great advantage, particularly when the digestion
is weak. Assimilation is the key to nutritional biochemistry.
PAGE 12
Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler, a German physician (born on 21st Aug. 1821, at
Zwischenahn, Oldenburg, proved that the mineral salts, vitally concerned in
carrying on functional activity in the cells of the human body, are twelve in number,
to which he gave the name of tissue salts. They are :
1. Calcium Fluoride (Calc. Fluor.)
2. Calcium phosphate (Calc. Phos.)
3. Calcium Sulphate (Calc. Sulph.)
4. Phosphate of Iron (Ferr. Phos.)
5. Potassium Chloride (Kali Mur.)
6. Potassium Phosphate (Kali Phos.)
7. Potassium Sulphate (Kali Sulph.)
8. Magnesium Phosphate (Mag. Phos.)
9. Sodium Chloride (Nat. Mur.)
10. Sodium phosphate (Nat. Phos.)

11. Sodium Sulphate (Nat. Sulph.)

12. Silica (Silicea)
These tissue salts are sufficient to cover most of the everyday ailments. They are
vital cell foods and therefore are in complete harmony with the human system. They
can be taken at all times, even during pregnancy with none but good results and are
ideal specially for the treatment of children's ailments.
To the newcomer to biochemistry the suggestions given in the following sections
will prove helpful, but it is always advisable to consult a doctor, preferably a
homoeopathic physician, whenever the symptoms persist or if they are very
unusual at the beginning or during the course of an illness. As a means of providing
first-aid, biochemic treatment is invaluable.
PAGE 13
Selecting the remedy
The key to success in using the Schuessler therapy is the accurate linking of the
symptoms with the appropriate tissue-salt. Symptoms are significant pointers to the
tissue-salts needed in any given case. Each of the tissue-salts has its own distinct
symptoms 'picture', e.g. , the spasms, cramps and neuralgia's of mag. Phos. ;
acidity which points to Nat. Phos. ; excess dryness or watery discharges which call
for Nat. Mur., and so on.
Definitions
"Acute" means sudden onset with more or less severity of symptoms. "Chronic"
means of long continuance lingering. A "chronic" ailment may have "acute" phases
and for such phases the directions for acute conditions will apply.
Dose
Acute and sub-acute diseases require 6x potency, which in cases of severe pains
should be administered frequently - every hour or quarter of an hour or, in some
cases, even every five minutes.
In chronic diseases, constitutional diseases, diseases, metabolic disturbances,
glandular ailments, and convalescence, 6x potency fort a short period followed by
12x potency to be administered at greater intervals according to the course or
nature of the disease.
PAGE 14
In general, an adult dose is four tablets, children two tablets. The tablets should be
dissolved on the tongue, or in case of instants and young children, may be given
dissolved in lukewarm.

Alternating remedies
When more than one remedy is required, it is usual for these to be taken in rotation
daily ; the frequency of dose depending on the acute or acute or chronic nature of
the ailment.
Inter current remedies
These are remedies of secondary importance having some bearing on a particular
case. They assist the action of the principal remedy or remedies by correcting any
secondary condition which may have a retarding effect on the general treatment.
Changing the remedy
In the treatment of some ailments, particularly those of an acute kind, different
symptoms may make their appearance during the course of treatment ; in such
cases the remedies should be changed or supplemented in accordance with the
variation of the symptoms at each successive stage.
External application
For dry application a few tablets may be crushed and the power applied direct to
the affected part. This is the usual method of dealing with cuts and abrasions after
the injured part has been cleansed.
PAGE 15
As a lotion, dissolve ten tablets in half a tumbler of water, which has previously
been boiled and allowed to cool. This lotion should be dabbed on the affected part.

(materia medica)
Calcarea fluorica
(calc. fluor.)
This salts is found in the surface of the bones and in the enamel of the teeth ; also
in the elastic fibres and skin. A disturbance of the equilibrium of the molecules of
this salt causes a relaxed condition and dilatation, interfering with absorption and
hence favour hardening and swelling of the tissues. Enlarged veins, piles, swollen
and hardened glands, tumours, uterine displacements are conditions resulting from
such a cause.
Head
Lumps on head ; hard swellings ; nasal troubles ; stuffy cold ; bad odor with thick
lumpy discharge, which is hard to detach, going back into throat.

Note
NAT. SULPH. Throws out excessive fluid from the tissues.
NAT. MUR. is the agent for establishing an equilibrium of fluids in various tissues of
the body, it gives the body the capacity to use fluids in body cells. In some cases,
therefore, both the remedies given together may antidote one another. The right
course will depend on the individual situations.
SILICEA has the capacity to throw out foreign bodies from the skin or body system.
PAGE 31
Application guide for some common ailments
(use 6x potency, if no potency is mentioned)
Abortion
Expulsion of product of conception within 12 weeks of pregnancy is called abortion.
In cases of threatened abortion there will be pain in lower abdomen and bleeding
per vagina. Complete bed rest, and sedation often prevent it.
Kali. Phos. and Calc. Fluor in 6x potency often help in preventing threatened
abortion.
Abscesses and boils
An acute abscess is one which develops rapidly, beginning as a sore spot in some
part of the body, becoming hard, inflamed, painful and filled with pus. When pus
formation has occurred it is an indication that the white blood corpuscles have
successfully overcome the invading micro-organisms. There may be some fever. Hot
fomentation's will help to relieve the pain, which subsides when the abscess bursts.
Boils resemble abscesses, but usually come in corps. Careful cleanliness clean liness
of the affected area is important in preventing the spread of infection. The action of
Silicea helps the abscess to ripen. A lowered state of health is sometimes a
predisposing factor and in such cases a course of Calc. phos. is indicated.

PAGE 32
Ferrum phosphoricum
. phos. 3x.
inflammatory stage, when there is heat, pain, congestion and fever. Given in
alternation with Kali. Mur. it will often prevent swelling and suppuration (formation
of pus).
Kalium muriaticum
3x.
For the swelling before pus has begun to form (alternate with Fer. Phos) Also use
locally on lint 2x or 3x powder.
Silicea terra
12x
When swelling becomes soft and pus has commenced to form. It will assist
suppuration, cause the abscess to ripen and often break without surgical
interference in low potencies, aborts in higher (30x). should also be given after the
abscess has broken and is discharging its contents. Gum boils and peri-anal
abscess. Throws out foreign bodies from the skin.
Calcarea sulphurica
If the discharge continues too long and the wound refuses to heal owing to a
torpidly of the tissues ; use 12x.
Calcarea fluorica
When the suppurative process affects the bone. When the abscess has a hard,
callous edge. Use 12x.
Accidents
Trauma of any kind, is a common mishap in daily life. Care of wound and affected
part is a must. Preventive measures can reduce the number of deaths and
sufferings significantly.
PAGE 33
Ferrum phosphoricum
3x.

In fresh, bleeding wounds ; cuts, falls, blows and sprains. Give every two hours and
sprinkle powdered 3x tablets on the bleeding part. It will arrest haemorrhage.
Bruises. It prevents pain, congestion, fever, swelling. Strains to tendons and
ligaments.
Kalium phosphoricum
Useful in septic wounds.
Calcarea fluorica
For strained muscles and bruises of bones. Use in 12x potency.
Calcarea sulphurica
Bruises, cuts, wounds ; neglected : when suppuration sets in, wounds discharge
pus.
Natrium sulphuricum
Head injury and its bad effects. mental troubles arising after head injury.
Silicea terra
Neglected injuries, suppurating, wounds discharging thick, yellow pus, specially for
deep-seated suppuration.
Acidity
Acidity is a somewhat loose term indicating that the blood, or one or more of the
secretions is less alkaline than it should be. This excess of acid gives rise to many
distressing symptoms. There may be gastric disturbance, irritation of the skin and
mucous membranes, impoverishment of the blood, palpitation of the heart, twinges
of rheumatism, headache on the top of the head with a sense of fullness, a
persistent feeling of tiredness and other symptoms of disturbed metabolism.
Whenever signs of acidity make their appearance, the principle remedy, Nat. Phos.,
should be given - irrespective of any other tissue salt which may be indicated - as
this acid state, if allowed to persist, will hamper the action of other tissue salts?
PAGE 34
Natrium phosphoricum
6x.
The principle remedy for the treatment of acidity.
Natrium sulphuricum

This tissue salt is one of the alkaline sulphates and it may be used to supplement
the action of Nat. Phos.
Silicea terra

Magnesium phosphoricum
Burning, tasteless eructation's, relieved by drinking hot water. Flatulence with
distension of the stomach, belching and distension of abdomen.
Acne
The first sign of getting mature or adult-hood, but is very annoying in young
people. A constant source of anxiety as it is a cosmetic problem. The period of
maturity and personality building does not allow such spots on face ; this is what is
the main reason for anxiety. Acne is a condition of inflammation and infection of the
oil glands and ducts.
Natrium muriaticum
Chief remedy, used in 12x potency ; a dose night and morning. Persons of palc,
earthy complexion, constipated, depressed ; often students.
Kalium muriaticum

enlarged".
Ague
Term used for recurrent malaria.
Nat. Sulph. and Ferr. Phos. in 6x potency alternately. See "Intermittent fever".
Alopecia
Baldness. Falling of hairs in patches or complete. Some may have a familial trend to
it. Anxiety, old catarrh, etc. may play in causative role.
Calc. Phos. 6x. stops falling and thinning of hairs. Kali phos. and Nat. Mur. 6x in
patients who are mentally tired and depressed. Loss of hair in bunches.
Amenorrhoea
(Absence of menses) See "Female Disorders".
Anaemia
Anaemia is a lowering of the quality of the blood. The blood cells may be too few in
number or the oxygen carrying red constituents of the blood cells may be deficient.
PAGE 36
Anaemia may result directly from a loss of blood, attended with a deficiency of the
tissue salts needed to build new blood corpuscles. Lack of Calc. Phos. would cause a
deficiency of red blood cells, as it enters largely into the formation of bone, in the
marrow of which the blood cells are created. Absence of Ferr. Phos. shows up
immediately in a deficiency of haemoglobin, the red colouring matter of the blood
can usually be restored to its normal volume and quality. Food rich in vitamins such
as red meats, liver, milk, eggs and green vegetables should be included in the diet.
Fresh air and sunshine are also recommended.
Calcarea phosphorica
3x.

Used in pernicious anaemia, leukaemia, or in leucocytosis after exhaustive

diseases.
Ferrum phosphoricum
3x
Increases the haemoglobin.
Natrium muriaticum
As an inter current remedy.
Kalium phosphoricum
Cerebral anaemia and leukaemia .
Aneurism
A dilation in the walls of artery or vein. It can be congenital or otherwise. They may
result from congenital weaknesses in vessel wall or impaired wall or impaired wall

PAGE 37
Angina pectoris
A chest pain resulting from temporary is chemia due to obstruction in the coronary
arteries, i.e. , arteries are not capable of supplying a sufficient amount of blood to
the heart muscles. People with angina pectoris often have a disease that bring
about the pain. High blood pressure, anaemia, arteriosclerosis and diabetes are
common causes. Pain usually is retro sternal, may be referred to left arm, neck or
jaw. Pain is crushing and constricting as if with a vise. Angina is often precipitated
by strenuous exercises and is better by rest.

torpid liver, often seen after malaria and jaundice, etc.
Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the structure in and about the joints.
There is pain, swelling and redness of the affected joint. The condition usually
begins in the small joints of the hands, especially the fingers. Subsequently other
joints are involved. With recurrent attacks the joints tend to become swollen and
fixed. In comparison with the swelling of the joints there is wasting of the
surrounding muscle.
PAGE 39
Osteo arthritis is another form of arthritis. It is a common disorder of the joints. It is
characterised by the gradual destruction of the central part of the cartilage lining
the affected joint. There can be changes in bone structure that could include new
bone formation which may occur in the form of spurs (an abnormal projection of
bone). In advanced cases surgery may be required.

something in throat, brain injury, paralysis, etc.
Plastic bags pulled over the head of babies is a common cause. Treatment is supply
of oxygen.

Ferr. Phos. and Kali Phos. 6x dissolved in hot water and administered frequently till
the professional aid is available.
Asthma
Asthma is a disorder of respiration characterised by severe paroxysms of difficult
breathing especially exhaling the breath, usually followed by a period of complete
relief, with recurrence of the attacks at more or less frequent intervals.
Asthma manifests itself due to spasmodic contraction of the smaller bronchial
tubes. It is this narrowing of the bronchial tubes, often accentuated by swelling of
the lining epithelium, that is responsible for the great difficulty in breathing which is
the characteristic feature of the condition. There are a large number of substances
to which the asthmatic subject may be hypersensitive, contact with which is
responsible for an attack. These include pollens ; the emanations of certain animals
such as cats, dogs, horses, etc; certain articles of diet; bacteria. The discovery of
the substance to which the individual is susceptible may sometimes be difficult.
In many cases the specific susceptibility may be enhanced by some non-specific
condition, such as emotional disturbance, indigestion or an infection such as sore
throat or a "cold in the head". There is yet another group of asthmatic subjects in
whom the asthma is due to some chronic or repeated infection, such as attacks of
tonsillitis, sinusitis, or nasal catarrh.
PAGE 41
Asthma is more common in men than in women and the first attack usually occurs
in childhood. According to Dr. Schuessler, a deficiency of certain tissue salts can
lead to attacks of asthma. Some alleviation of the symptoms may be obtained with
the use of the appropriate tissue salt.

PAGE 43
Backache
Many people have an aching pain in the back. Pain, stiffness or tenderness in the
back is a symptom to be met within a number of different diseases. In rheumatism,
chronic or acute, there may be much pain and stiffness. Pain in the back about the
level of the waist is very often due to spinal disease, or it may be due to kidney
trouble. Lumbago is a very common form of backache which is always made worse
by stooping.
In women pain in the back is so common that women have been divided into two
classes, "those with backs and those without them". In some cases the pain may be
due to a disorder of the reproductive organs. In such cases the pain is usually felt
low down in the back. There are, however, many women who suffer from pain in the
small of the back without any sign of disease and who are otherwise perfectly well.

caused by constant localised pressure on the skin of bed - ridden patient. Common
sites are loins, pelvis, buttocks, hips, shoulders, thighs and ankles. Paralytic patients
having spinal cord injuries are prone to get them.
Kali phos. and Ferr. Phos. 6x in alternation will help in healing. Few tablets of each
dissolved in water and lint pad dipped in the solution can be used as a compress,
renewing every few hours.
Bed - wetting (enuresis)

attributable to poor parental training or emotional disturbances. Physical conditions
aggravating it are phimosis, pinworms or cystitis. Excessive intake of soft drinks,
tea, coffee, etc. can cause it.
Ferr. Phos. and Calc. Phos. 6x given in alternation. If worms are present, treat for
them also.
PAGE 45

Biliousness
Bile is a bitter, yellowish fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It
is discharged through the bile duct into the intestine where it assists in the process
of digestion and assimilation. About a pint or more is secreted daily, but much of
this is reabsorbed into the bloodstream and circulated back to the liver, to be again
excreted, and so on. Biliousness is a rather vague term applied sometimes to
migraine or to the sick headache and vomiting which occur in some forms of gastric
catarrh or following indiscretions of diet. The liver salt, Nat. Sulph., is the principal
remedy indicated for disorders in the secretion and flow of bile. By irritating the
epithelial cells and nerves of the bile ducts Nat. Sulph. helps the normal secretion of
these organs, hence it is an excellent remedy for biliousness.
Kalium muriaticum
6x

substance which causes allergic reaction. Blister, redness and swelling are the local
reactions, usually disappear in 24 hours.
Nat. Mur., Nat. Phos., Ferr. Phos and Kali Phos. 6x dissolved in hot water should be
taken in frequent sips. A stronger solution of the same salts can be used for external
application as a compress.

them in hot water may be used as a local application., See "Burns and Scalds".
Blood pressure
HIGH : It is a condition in which a person's blood pressure is higher than it should
normally be when all variables are taken into account. It is a symptom rather than a
disease. It may be benign, with cause unknown, or it is often hereditary in origin.
PAGE 47

diastolic is below 70 mm. Primary, secondary and postural are the three types of
hypotension.
Kali phos. 6x. taken at bedtime often helps in removing the symptoms of low blood
pressure. Treat anaemia if it is also present. See "Anaemia".
Boil
See "Abscesses and Boils"

Bones, affections of
Various mineral salts are indispensable in the formation, growth and proper
nourishment of the bone structure of the human body. A deficiency of Calc. Phos. in
the bone cells may cause faulty growth and soft bones, and prevent proper repair
after fractures. Calc. Fluor. and Silicea are normally present to give needed density
to the outer surfaces and coverings of the bones, and a deficiency of these salts is a
cause of disturbances in these areas.
Calc. Fluor. and Silicea 12x give needed density to the outer surfaces and coverings
of the bones ; ulceration's of bones ; hard, rough elevations and bruises of the
covering of the bones.
Calc. Phos. faulty growth and softness of bones. Its use establishes proper repair of

Calc. Fluor and Kali. Phos. 12x. In alternation is the most effective treatment.
PAGE 49
Breathlessness
May be due to anaemia, asthma, etc., should be treated accordingly.

Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an inflammatory condition of the mucous membranes of the bronchial
tubes. It may follow a cold or catarrh. The usual symptoms are feverishness with a
harsh, dry cough and wheezing respiration. The painful chest symptoms become
less distressing when expectoration begins. Rest in bed and a light diet, with warm
drinks, are beneficial. If the inflammation spreads into the smaller bronchial tubes
the symptoms become intensified with respiration rapid and difficult. Special care
should be taken in the case of the very young and the aged.
Ferrum phosphoricum
Is the first remedy ; should be given in 3x at frequent intervals. Fever, congestion ;
short, painful cough, oppressive breathing are the indications for its use.
Kalium muriaticum
Expectoration thick white, if fever present should be used alternately with Ferrum
phos.

Bunions

A painful swelling at the base of the big toe, which bends the toe towards the other
toes so that they crowd there. The bursa is inflamed and the adjacent skin
thickened. The deformity often results from wearing narrow, tight shoes that have
pointed fronts. Change to web fitting broad toe shoes.
Silicea 12x is an effective remedy.
Burns and scalds
One of the most frequent of all injuries, burns are caused by dry heat, whereas
scalds are by wet heat, by hot water, oil, etc. Burns are classified into three degree
the damage is limited to the outer layer of skin with redness, warmth and
tenderness. In second degree the damage goes through the outer layer and
involves the deeper true skin, forming blebs and blisters. In third degree the entire
skin is destroyed and charred layer of tissue is exposed. When it covers over one
third to one half the body, the result is fatal especially in children. Treatment should
start with application of cold water over affected area and treatment for shock be
given by lowering the head and raising the legs up.
PAGE 51
Ferrum Phos 3x. Should be given frequently.
Silicea 6x and Calc. Sulph. 6x. If suppuration has taken place.
Kali mur. Burns of first degree, also of the second with blisters. Can be applied
externally also. White or greyish exudation over wound.
See "Blisters".
Cancer
A tumour, a carcinoma, or sarcoma, possessing the fine attributes of malignancy ;
ulceration, invasiveness to neighbouring tissues, recurrence after removal,
migration to distant organs and tissues via the lymphatic or blood channels and
usually fatal termination. Cancer is a collection of primitive cells, probably
misplaced during the embryonic period, which remain dormant for years until they
became activated by a carcinogen. Then they multiply wildly beyond the capacity of
normal tissues and acquire the properties of malignancy. Tobacco, clay pipe tar,
asbestos, x-ray, sunlight, sex hormones and some insecticides are carcinogenic.
Constant irritation can also produce cancerous changes.
Kali Sulph. 6x. Cancer or lips, breast, oral cavity, etc. Thin, yellowish discharges
from the cancerous ulcer.

painful and more dangerous often accompanied by fever, malaise and sign of
general infection.
See "Abscesses and Boils".
Whichever remedy is given should be alternated with Kali Phos. 6x.
Catarrh
An excessive secretion from the mucous membranes particularly those of the air
passages. It usually begins as a nasal catarrh (coryza) with a feeling of stuffiness
and sneezing, accompanied by a profuse, watery discharge from the eyes and nose.
Sometimes there is a loss of sense of smell and taste. There may also be soreness
of the throat with bronchial irritation and symptoms similar to those of the common
cold. The nature of the discharge is a guide to the tissue salts required.

edge of the nostrils. Itching of the tip of the nose.
PAGE 54
Chaps and chilblains (frostbite)
Irritation, dryness and redness caused by exposure to cold or by soap, harp water,
and detergents used by persons with deficient oily secretion in the skin, commonly
found on hands, face and lips. Face should be protected from exposure outdoor with
a muffler. Cold cream or bland oil may be applied.
Chilblains - Stagnation and congestion of the blood in the peripheral veins due to
exposure of the part to excessive cold, appearing most commonly in the fingers,
toes, ears and tip of the nose, and affecting very young and the very old. Blanching
of skin followed by tingling and bluish-red coloration and swelling, intense itching
and burning, aggravated by warmth are common symptoms.
May be prevented by wearing woollen socks, gloves, rubbing fingers and toes to
promote circulation, adequate nutrition should be maintained.

PAGE 55
Chicken pox
Chicken - pox is an acute contagious disease of children characterised by
feverishness and an eruption on the skin. It occurs in epidemics and the incubation
period can very from eleven to twenty-one days after exposure to infection. The first
symptom is feverishness with aching of the back and legs. Within twenty-four hours
there is an eruption of red pimples, which later become filled with a clear fluid.
These vesicles eventually form small crusts which scale off in little more than a
week. The child must be isolated from other children for fourteen days from the
appearance of the rash. Scratching should be discouraged or the marks on the skin
may remain. In some cases shingles in adults are thought to be due to infection
from chicken-pox. Medical advice should be sought.
Ferrum Phos. and Kali Mur. Are required in the early stages. It is not necessary to
give many doses as the disease is mild and runs a short course. These remedies will
reduce general suffering.
Kali Sulph. When eruptions are checked ; alternate with Ferr. Phos. to promote
perspiration.
Cholera and cholera infantum
It is a severe contagious disease that may be fatal because of dehydration resulting
from diarrhoea and vomiting. Caused by vibrio cholera, it is carried by victim's
faeces, urine, vomit, and is transmitted through contaminated food or drinking
water. It lodges in small gut causing severe cramps and collapse.
Ferrum phosphoricum

PAGE 58
Colic
Colic is a sudden abdominal cramp which may be caused by one of several
conditions. The most usual form is that due to spasmodic contractions of the bowel
and is called intestinal colic. There may be gastric colic in the stomach, biliary colic
due to irregular contractions of the bile ducts, renal colic in the kidneys, etc. Infants
are subject to attacks of colic especially when fed artificially, and in such cases a
modification of diet may be necessary. Painter's colic due to lead poisoning and gallstone colic due to gall bladder stones getting impacted in bile duct.

Concussion of the brain
A temporary dazed condition or loss of consciousness resulting from a blow or fall
on the head (violent shaking of the brain). The blood vessels of brain contract and
do not deliver the necessary amount of oxygen needed to maintain vital functions.
Victim lies motionless with shallow breathing, rapid pulse, low blood pressure and a
cold, clammy skin.
Nat. Sulph. 6x. Is of special benefit for the chronic effects of falls on the head. After
some time give a few weekly doses of 30x.
Ferr. Phos. Febrile conditions afterwards.

Calc. Phos. As an inter current remedy for numb sensation.

PAGE 60
Conjunctivitis
(see 'eyes').
Constipation
Though persons in health generally have one daily movement of the bowels, some
may have two regular motions, while in others a motion once in two days is quite
normal. When the bowel is evacuated too seldom or incompletely, the motions
become dry and hard with difficulty of evacuation. There may be a mechanical
obstruction of the bowel, but generally the condition is due to one or more of the
following factors - too little "roughage" in the diet, insufficient exercise, failure to
inculcate the habit of regularity, dryness of the bowel, lack of tone of the colon
muscle and of the villi of the intestines etc. The diet should include plenty of fresh
fruits, green vegetables, green salads (uncooked), wholemeal bread and dried fruits
such as prunes, which have an indigestible residue and thus provide bulk to
exercise the intestinal muscles. Plenty of fluids, including raw fruit juices which
provide water in its purest form. The regular use of aperients tends to aggravate the
trouble.
Calcarea phosphorica
Costive, hard stools with blood, especially in old people.
Kalium sulphuricum
Habitual constipation with insipid, pappy taste and yellow, slimy coating on tongue.
Natrium muriaticum
Dry stools, with torn, bleeding, smarting feeling after stools. Stools hard, dry and
difficult to pass, in children mechanical aid may be required to break the large
pieces. Haemorrhoids, headache and backache also accompany it.

intensely painful.

Natrium phosphoricum
Constipation of infants.
Silicea terra
Stools recede after having been partially expelled.
Convalescence
After an acute illness, the body requires a period of comparative ernst in order to
recuperate. Some acute ailments are attended by greater risk of a relapse during
convalescence, and this applies particularly to those affecting respiration. During
the period of recovery strenuous activities should be avoided and exposure to cold,
damp, long hours of standing, etc. be reduced to minimum.

Corns
Horny thickness of the outer layer of the skin produced by pressure, mostly on the
toes and feet. A hard corn is thickening caused by the pressure of the tight shoe ; a
soft corn between two toes, by heat and moisture. Sufficiently wide shoes often
relieve the symptoms.

PAGE 62
Coughs
Coughing is a symptom that occurs during the course of most diseases of the
respiratory organs. It should not, however, be neglected as it may be the beginning
of more serious trouble, e.g. , bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. The nature and
consistency of the expectoration point to the tissue salt required. There are some
coughs which are due to causes outside the respiratory tract and if there is no
disease of this tract, medical advice should be sought.

or on rising, from cold drinks ; sputum offensive.
Cracked lips

Nat. Mur. and Silicea 12x In alternation.

Cramps
Is a painful spasmodic contraction of muscles, most frequently occurring in the
limbs, but also apt to affect certain internal organs. This disorder belongs to the
class of diseases known as local spasms, of which other varieties exist in such
affections as spasmodic asthma and colic. The cause of these painful seizures
resides in the nervous system, and operates either directly from the great nerve
centres, or, as is generally the case, indirectly by reflex action, for example, when
attacks are brought on by some derangement of the digestive organs.
Calc. Phos. Follows to strengthen the work of Mag. Phos. Alternate.
Mag. Phos. Is a sure remedy.
PAGE 64
Croup
(difficult and noisy respiration in children)
Croup is a term used to denote various ailments characterised by swelling which
partially blocks the entrance to the larynx. It occurs in children and is accompanied
by wheezing inspiration. It can sometimes be serious on account of the risk of a
complete blockage and suffocation. The attack usually comes on suddenly at night,
following a chill. The breathing is hoarse and croaking and there may be a
struggling for breath. A child subject to attacks of croup should be especially
guarded against cold and damp until the tendency is outgrown. Medical advice
should be sought.
Ferr. Phos. And Kali mur. Are the chief remedies ; use alternately in 3x.
Mag. Phos. Spasmodic closure of windpipe ; sudden shrilled voice ; suffocative
cough.
If the above remedies do not act, give Calc. Phos. and Calc. Fluor.
Crying of infants
Calc. and Mag. Phos. 3x in hot water given in teaspoonful frequently.
See "Dentition and Dental troubles", and "Teething".
Cystitis
Inflammation of urinary bladder is usually due to infection by a germ, together with
a lowered state of health. Some types of germs are so powerful that they alone will
cause inflammation of the bladder, but these are not common.

The causes which tend to lower the body's resistance are injury or congestion of
the bladder wall and stagnation of the urine.
PAGE 65
Stagnation of the urine may be due to a variety of causes in the passage from the
bladder to the exterior (the urethra), such as stricture (narrowing of the passage),
enlargement of the prostate gland which surrounds the neck of the bladder, the
presence of stone or other foreign body and also various conditions affecting the
nerve supply to the bladder.
Medical advice should be sought for cystitis.
See "Bladder troubles".
Cysts
A sac containing fluid or gelatinous substance which may be located beneath the
skin or mucous membrane in various parts of the body, of all size and degree of
severity. A cyst has a distinct surrounding wall and may be filled with various foreign
substances including serum, mucus, blood, hairs, hairs, skin cells, etc.
A when is a skin cyst usually located on scalp containing sebaceous material.

sebaceous glands in the skin.
Treat as mentioned under 'Alopecia'.
PAGE 66
Deafness
Loss of hearing ranging from partial to total is of two major type conductive and
nerve. If both are present it is called mixed type. The interruption of sound
vibrations in the outer or middle ear before they can reach the nerve endings of the
inner ear causes conductive deafness, wax in external ear canal is the commonest
cause. Damage to nerve endings in internal ear of the auditory nerve deafness.
Arteriosclerosis, Meniere's disease and syphilis are other causes.
Ferrum Phos. and Kali Mur. 3x Alternately in beginning.

Nat. Mur. Due to bad effects of quinine.

This period of natural development of a child is often associated with mild to severe
pain, restlessness, irritability and excessive drooling. Child wants to chew or bite
always. Maintenance of nutrition and soothing are must.

Dental caries - Tooth decay, commonly called cavities, is caused by bacterial action.
Cavities being on the surface of a tooth, various types of bacteria form breeding
colonies on the enamel which is further destroyed deeply due to conversion of food
sugars in lactic acid and reaches to dentine, pulp and lastly root canal irritating
nerve and destroying the tooth.
Calcarea phosphorica

disease in itself. It may be caused by a wide variety of disorders, including bacterial
contamination of food, virus infection, allergy, nervous reaction as well as various
serious and chronic ailments.
PAGE 70
The infection disturbs the gastrointestinal tract in a way that interferes with the
normal absorption of liquids and salt. The disturbance also causes rapid peristaltic
movements causing loss of more salts and fluids.

Female disorders
AMENORRHOEA (suppression of the menses)
The Schuessler therapy is an excellent method of treatment of the various
disorders peculiar to the female generative system. It rests upon the premise that
the restoration of health is best accomplished through stimulation of the vital
natural processes of the human system. The tissue salts produce this with no
untoward side of drugs.
All the pelvic organs are lined with delicate mucous membranes, there are also
many muscular and connective tissues and an abundance of nerve and blood
vessels centred there, hence these parts are peculiarly susceptible to disturbing
influences, apt to assume the form of one of the many disorders peculiar to women.
The very sensitive nature of these structures, however, makes them also quickly
responsive to the beneficial healing influence of the tissue salts.
Calc. Phos. Amenorrhea in anaemic patients.
Kali Phos. Suppression of flow with depressed spirits, lassitude and debility.
Constant dull headaches, cross and irritable, fidgety.
Kali Sulph. Scanty or suppressed menses with weight and fullness of abdomen.

Nat. Mur. In young girls where menses do not appear, or when scanty and at long
intervals.
Dysmenorrhoea
(painful menstruation)
Dysmenorrhoea may be caused by lack of proper development of the uterus, by
congestion and inflammation of the uterus and other pelvic organs or, rarely, by
mechanical obstruction to the flow. In young girls the commonest cause is lack of
proper nutrition, either of the pelvic organs alone or of the whole body.
PAGE 80
Accompanying the nutritional disturbance there is usually some condition of the
nervous system causing neuralgia.
In this form of dysmennorrhoea the patient seems normal until the approach of the
menstrual period when neuralgic pains appear ; increasing in severity until the flow
is well established, and then they subside. If the neuralgia and affects the ovaries,
the patient may suffer an attack of similar pain halfway between the periods.
Dysmenorrhoea caused by congestion or inflammation of the pelvic organs
presents a different type of pain during menstruation. Here the sensation is that of
soreness, heaviness and dull pain. The same symptoms are present during the
interval between periods but not so severe.
Calcarea phosphorica
Intercurrently in anaemic patients. In girls at puberty, scanty flow.
Ferrum phosphoricum
Painful menstruation, with bright red flow, flushed face and quickened pulse.

PAGE 81

Natrium muriaticum
Menses scanty and dark, preceded by frontal headache. Flow is irritating. Great
mental depression.
Silicea terra
Icy coldness of the entire body before and during menses, with constipation and
sweating of the feet.
Leucorrhoea
Leucorrhoea is caused by the secretion of an abnormal quantity of mucus in the
mucous membranes which line the vagina and uterus. This mucus is discharged
from the body through the vagina, and may vary in nature from a thin, colourless
fluid, like water, to a thick, milky-white fluid, sometimes tinged with blood.
Leucorrhoea occurs most frequently in young, unmarried girls, in women after
childbirth and also in older women after the change of life. This is due to systemic
weakness in young girls and mothers, and to changes which take place in the
mucous lining of the vagina in older women.
Other causes, however, such as taking cold, physical or nervous strain, etc. may
also bring it on such cases are usually easier to cure than the ones mentioned in the
preceding paragraph. But in any event, the basic cause of the leucorrhoea should
be discovered as soon as possible, and efforts made to overcome it.
Calcarea phosphorica
As a constitutional tonic ; inter current with the chief remedy ; a discharge of
albuminous mucus. Leucorrhoea worse after menses. Looks like white of an egg.
Kalium muriaticum
Discharge of milky white, non-irritating mucus, mild, profuse. Excellent in long

smelling.
Natrium sulphuricum
Discharge acrid, corrosive.
Menopause (change of life, stoppage of menstruation)
The period of a woman's life during which the menses cease can be a critical time
and care must be taken that harm is not done, particularly to the nervous system.
The onset of the change of life is usually gradual beginning around forty years of
age, continuing from one to three years and marked by irregularity in the
appearance of menstruation, gradual diminution in the flow and nervous
manifestations.
Mental unrest is marked and there are frequent disturbances of the circulation
result in hot flushes and chilly periods so common in this state.
Often the flow is profuse, especially following one or more missed periods, or may
be irregular-scanty and profuse.
The digestive tract is frequently disturbed and indigestion is common.
Calc. Phos. General weakness with rundown condition ; anaemia and loss of weight.
Ferrum. Phos. Hot flushes. Alternate with.
PAGE 83
Kali sulph. in 6x potency.
Kali Phos. Nervousness, depression, irritability, anxiety, and fainting spells.
Menorrhgia (profuse menstruation)
this may be brought about by increased congestion of the pelvic organs ; by too
fluid blood (non-coagulating) due to a tissue salt imbalance ; or by muscular
weakness of the uterus.
Simple anaemia mat be a contributory cause in some cases.
Calc. Fluor. Menorrhagia with bearing-down pains.

Calc. Phos. Menses too early in young girls, also in women, when anaemia is
present.

Misscarriage
(See "Abortion")
Pregnancy
During pregnancy a woman is required to carry on the process of life in her own
body and in addition provide all the material and life building processes for the
formation and development of a new life. This places an added physiological
demand on her and necessitates an increased supply of the mineral salts, which are
often not sufficiently available from the diet. Added to this is the stress of modern
life, with its influence upon the nervous system. A regular course of treatment with
the tissue salts, especially Kali Phos. and Calc. Phos., for three to six months
preceding childbirth, will prove highly beneficial for both mother and child.
PAGE 84
Calcarea phosphorica

systemic disorders while others are troubled with nervous or mental disturbances.
Kali Mur. Chief remedy, may be alternated with Ferr. Phos.
Kali phos. To tone up the nervous system.
Calc. Phos. To improve nutrition.
Fever
Fever is a condition characterised by an increase in body temperature, it is one of
the most common symptoms of disease but should be regarded as secondary to the
disordered state with which it is associated. The temperature of the human body in
health ranges between 98.4 degrees and 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit or 37
centigrade. There are daily variations, the lowest being between the hours of
midnight and 6 a.m. and the highest during the evening.

PAGE 86
The body normally maintains an even temperature by controlling the balance
between heat gained and lost. Heat is gained by oxidation of the tissues (Ferr.
Phos.), which takes place during the process of nutrition. Cooling occurs principally
through the lungs and skin. In the feverish state balance is no longer maintained,
more heat being lost than gained. A fever is usually preceded by chilliness and
there may be headache or a feeling of tiredness in the limbs. There follows a "hot"
stage, the skin feels dry, there is an increase in the rate of the pulse, excessive
thirst, and little desire for food. Then follows some form of discharge, usually a
profuse perspiration, after which the fever declines. In some diseases the fever may
be continued or remittent.
Ferrum phosphoricum
The first remedy indicated in all types of fevers ; rapid pulse, flushed face,
sometimes accompanied by chilly sensation, vomiting of undigested food. Ferr.
Phos. should be continued as long as the fever lasts, and alternated with such other
tissue salts as the subsequent symptoms indicate.
Kalium muriaticum
second stage of fevers, tongue covered with greyish-white coating. There is usually
constipation present with light-coloured stools.
Kalium sulphuricum

are numerous and may arise from simple causes such as too hurried meals and
insufficient mastication of the food.
PAGE 88
Diet is obviously important and the digestive organs should be given as much rest

Gout
Gout is a constitutional disease in which there is an excess of uric acid in the blood.
It has a marked tendency to be hereditary and it could be regarded as a good
example of a disease in which the children suffer for the carnal sins of their fathers.
Those who come from "gouty stock" may become typically gouty in their old age.

Those who lead a sedentary life and indulge in rich food and liquor appear to be
predisposed to this disease.
PAGE 92
Gout is more common in mature age than in the earlier years of life. In a typical
attack of gout there is a severe pain in a joint, usually the big toe. The joint swells
and becomes intensely hot. Any jarring of the affected joint causes extreme pain.
When the trouble assumes a chronic form, the joint becomes permanently swelled
and remains tender and sensitive at all times.

Haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids (piles) are a varicosed condition of the veins at the lower end of the
bowel. Piles may be internal or external or both. Internal piles extend about one inch
up the bowel. Sedentary habits are a predisposing factor and constipation with
straining at stool is not an unusual accompaniment of this painful condition. Piles
sometimes occurs during pregnancy, and they can also be a symptom of other
diseases. External piles not usually cause any pain or trouble. Sometimes they may
become inflamed and give off a thin discharge. Internal piles may give no sign of
their presence except for occasional bleeding. Too great a loss of blood will cause
anaemia. When internal piles are large they may protrude and become inflamed
and painful. In general, piles are more of an inconvenience than a serious condition.
Care should be taken to avoid constipation and it is better to achieve this by
regulating the diet than by recourse to purgatives, which in the long run aggravate
the trouble. The parts should be carefully washed after evacuation and any
protrusions be gently pushed back.
PAGE 95

See "Alopecia".
Hay fever
Hay fever is an allergic condition of the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and
air passages. One of the predisposing factors is its hereditary propagation. It is
twice as common in men as women, and it seems to affect those of active
temperament and high mental development. Attacks of hay fever can be brought on
from pollen from the hay fields. When there is an underlying tissue salt disturbance
in the tissues, those particular tissues are subject to an allergic reaction. The eyes
and nose are most commonly involved, the bronchi frequently, when the disease is
called hay asthma.
PAGE 96
The attack commences with irritation of the nasal membrane, swelling, dryness and
tickling culminating in sneezing quickly followed by a profuse watery discharge from
the nose and usually from the eyes at the same time. There is smarting and burning
of both the nose and eyes. This is the common type, although many develop
symptoms of bronchial origin and some have typical attacks of asthma. It is
suggested that those who are annually troubled with hay fever should take the
indicated tissue salts approximately four to six weeks prior to the expected attack of
hay fever and continue the treatment during the actual hay fever season.

Headache
Headache is one of the most commonplace of human ailments. It is symptomatic of
many disease conditions, some slight and others more serious, and it can arise from
a variety of causes. The brain itself is insensitive to pain. It is probable that the pain
of headache is due to dilatation, a response to nervous stimuli, or may arise from
the neck muscles, or scalp, or from other nearby organs. One of the most frequent
causes of headache is anxiety and high blood pressure.
PAGE 97
Detective eyesight is another common cause. The pain occurs in the region of the
brow and tends to come on in the evening, particularly if a lot of reading or fine
work has been done during the day. Sinus infection is a less common cause and in
such cases there is usually a history of colds in the head. Septic teeth can also be
responsible for headaches.
Constipation is a common cause, especially in children. Headaches are also a
characteristic feature of fevers.
These are some of the factors responsible for headaches and in treating the trouble
it is necessary to search out and remove the cause. Although the painkilling drugs
have their place, their continued use to suppress symptoms is not advisable and
some could result in harmful side effects, e.g. , stomach haemorrhage.

Influenza
Influenza is one of the infectious febrile diseases principally involving the
respiratory organs. It occurs usually in epidemics during the winter months. The
Italians at one time ascribed it to the influence of the stars, hence the name
"influenza". It is now known to be due to a virus. The onset of influenza is sudden
with a feeling of chilliness, headache and aching of the limbs, followed by sore
throat and other symptoms. Old people particularly are susceptible to
complications. Heart symptoms are common and constitute one of the major
dangers of influenza. Inflammation of the middle ear is not uncommon following
influenza. An aftermath is depression, which may even amount to melancholia.

Jaundice
Jaundice is due to the presence of pigment of bile in the blood which causes the
skin to turn yellowish in colour. There are many different causes of this condition
and naturally the symptoms vary in accordance with the cause. The commonest
form is that known as catarrhal jaundice, due to an inflammation or catarrh of the
bile duct which prevents the flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder into the
intestine. This inflammation, it has been found, usually begins in the duodenum, or
first part of the small intestine, then spreads to the bile duct where it causes an
obstruction.

Lumbago
Lumbago is a form of rheumatism affecting the muscles of the lower part of the
back. It is sometimes brought on by exposure to cold and damp or unaccustomed
exercise, such as bending and lifting. There is an inflammatory condition of the
muscular tissues (Ferr. Phos) with congestion and pressure upon the nerve endings.
Lumbago usually comes on suddenly, like a stab in the back, and it may be difficult
or impossible to move on account of the pain. The attacks are usually of short

Maesles
Measles is an acute and highly infectious disease occurring mostly in children. The
disease known as German measles is a milder form. Special care should be taken by
women during pregnancy to avoid contact with infected persons. Epidemics usually
occur during the winter months and it is believed that the infecting agent is a
filterable virus.
PAGE 113
Measles usually begins like an ordinary cold, with cough, watering of the eyes and
nose and a high temperature. In four or five days eruptions appear, gradually
running together and extending down the body. The room should be kept darkened
if the eyes are affected and the child given a jig-saw puzzle or game in preference
to reading. About the ninth day the eruption disappears, with a bran-like shedding
of the outer skin. Measles are contagious and it is possible for infection to be carried
from one place to another by clothing or other articles, or by an infected third
person. There is always a risk of complication such as bronchitis or pneumonia and
special care should be taken during convalescence. Medical advice should be
sought.

Mumps
Mumps is an infectious disease characterised by inflammatory swelling of one or
other of the salivary glands, usually the parotid, and frequently occurring as an
epidemic. It mostly affects young persons but can occur at any age. It is highly
infectious for two or three days before the swellings appear. There is an incubation
period of two to three weeks, after infection, before the glands begin to swell. The
first signs are feverishness, sore throat and high temperature. The swelling subsides
within about a week. The person should be kept in isolation for about fourteen days
from the onset of the disease or seven days after the subsidence of all swelling. In
some cases there is swelling in other glands of the body. Care should be taken to
guard against complications. Medical advice should be sought.

Neck stiff
See "Rheumatism".
Nervous debility
this is a state where nerve force is being used up more quickly than it can be
generated, and when we recognise this simple fact we realise that to stimulate the
nerves with so-called "tonics" is one way of aggravating the trouble. The nutritional
aspect of this condition must be borne in mind and those tissue salts which play a

part in elaborating the nerve fluids should be taken steadily over a reasonable
period. Grief, worry, in due mental exertion, irregular habits, emotional
extravagance, these are the parasitically influences which rob the nerves of their
vitality. Treatment should aim to increase the supply of nervous energy and to bring
the nerves back to a state of normal tranquillity. When it has been achieved a
remarkable change for the better will be experienced.

Neuralgia
Neuralgia is pain felt along a nerve. There are very many different causes of
neuralgia as well as many different positions where the pain may be felt, but the
character of the pain is nearly always the same.
PAGE 119
The pain of neuralgia is of a severe shooting or throbbing nature and the skin along
which tiny branches of the nerves run is often very tender to touch. Another curious
feature of the pain of neuralgia is that it is not continuous but occurs in little bouts,
which are made worse by exposing the skin to cold. Neuralgia may be the result of
changes in the nerves, when the pain is said to be due to neuritis ; or nerves
themselves may be perfectly healthy, the pain being caused by pressure on the
nerves by other structures ; or the nerves may be irritated by some disease of
structures with which they are in contact.

Rheumatism
A collective term covering a variety of conditions involving inflammation of the
connective tissues of muscles and joints and characterised by pain in the affected
parts. There are several factors, some or all of which may be concerned with the
cause of rheumatism, such as focal infection, acidity, heredity, toxaemia, and
exposure to inclement weather.
PAGE 128

At the onset there is congestion and inflammation and if this can be broken up
promptly a serious attack may averted. For this purpose the tissue salt Ferr. Phos. is
needed. Ferr. Phos. is the oxygen carrier of the blood, its action enables the tissues
to "breathe" and so to burn up their waste products. The local congestion is thus
relieved and the inflammation subsides. Ferr. Phos. is useful as a first aid for acute
attacks of rheumatism.
Another associated symptom of rheumatism is acidity. Faulty elimination allows the
accumulation in the blood of acid waste products which have a bad effect on the
general circulation. The acid neutralising tissue salt Nat. Phos., breaks up these
harmful acids and so helps to bring about their elimination.
In rheumatic ailments, all the eliminative organs are involved. Kidneys, liver,
bowels, lungs, even the skin.
There is some hold-up in the body's waste transport system, the organs concerned
are lacking in tone and efficiency. The great vitalised of this transport system is Nat.
Sulph. This tissue salt brings about the removal of the poison-charged fluids which
are the normal result of the chemical exchange constantly taking place in the living
tissue-cells. If conditions arise which allow these waste matters to accumulate in the
blood and tissues, then self poisoning results. The importance of Nat. Sulph. to
rheumatic subjects thus becomes evident.
PAGE 129
Other tissue salts may sometimes be required owing to complications, but the
three tissue salts mentioned above are the ones most frequently needed.

protrudes and chronic diarrhoea is common. Malformation results if not treated in
time.

may be a rheumatic tendency. Pressure from other causes may also be responsible
for sciatic pain. A slipped vertebral disc is not an uncommon cause of pain in the
sciatic nerve. The trouble may first be felt a little behind the hip joint, and then
extending downwards even as far as the foot. Hip, knee and ankle joints are
particularly tender areas. In severe cases movement of the limb is very painful and
rest in bed becomes necessary.

disposition find it more difficult to relax. Nervous tension, aggravated by worry,
anxiety, overwork, etc., is one of the more common factors. Indigestion's is
responsible in many cases and the eating of a heavy meal and stimulants too soon
before retiring should be avoided. The brain sometimes becomes overactive as a
result of late night work so that it is difficult to settle down to sleep. Kali Phos. is
helpful as a constitutional remedy when the nervous system is weak. Elderly people
usually need less sleep and sleeplessness at night can sometimes be made good by
a "nap" after lunch.

Sunstroke
Sunstroke, more accurately called heat-stroke, is a condition of the body produced
by exposure to great heat, combined ordinarily with marked humidity of the
atmosphere. Sun exposure is not necessary to bring on this trouble, as artificial heat
will produce the same result. When the air is hot and moist, perspiration, which
ordinarily by its evaporation cools the temperature of the body, does not evaporate
but remains in drops upon the skin, while the body accumulates heat until
temperature is so high that a heat-stroke is brought on.

those preceding the onset of seasonal coughs and colds. Tonsillitis can be infectious
and in children it may be a forerunner of more serious trouble. The onset is sudden
with pain in swallowing, chilliness and fever. The tonsils become enlarged and
exude a whitish, purulent substance and the glands of the throat may become
tender and swollen. Medical attention is needed as during the early stages the
symptoms are similar to those of diphtheria. There is always a risk of complications
in this kind of infection unless proper precautions are taken and this applies
particularly with children the tonsils play an important part in the protective
mechanism of the body ; they act in the manner of filters and any exudation shows
that they are doing their job efficiently.

Domestic animals
Many a pet lover has had cause to be thankful to the tissue salts for their remedial
aid in treating sick domestic animals. Animal's ailments are similar to our own, and

their symptoms, viewed biochemically, are a guide to the treatment required.

Animals respond well to such corrective measures. They take to this form of
nutritional medication easily and their natural mode of living favours a quick
response. The common minor ailments of domestic animals can be treated
biochemically with most gratifying results but in the event of serious disease, or if
the symptoms are in any way unusual, you should immediately consult a veterinary
doctor.
The biochemic tissue salts are not drugs but vital cell foods and their action is in
complete harmony with nature. The tiny tablets dissolve on the tongue, or may be
given dissolved in a little warm water. For chronic cases, give three doses daily ;
acute cases, every half hour.

Prevention is better than cure
Without a doubt, prevention is better than cure. By prompt use of biochemic
medicines, early symptoms can cleared up. As a means of providing medical firstaid, the biochemic remedies are ideal. They are pleasant to take and are safe to use
at all times. They bring cure by removing the cause of disease.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
PAGE 156
Maintenance of health in middle age
With onset of middle age, there can follow middle age spread. This is a clear
indication that the entire system needs toning up (Calc. Fluor.) , digestion and

assimilation needs to be improved (Calc. Phos.) and excess water to be eliminated

from the system (Nat. Mur.)
Remember, health cannot be long maintained under obesity.
