QUESTION 3 (15 MARKS)

Hot stamping technique for quenchable steel involves heating the metal sheet until complete
austenitization (900C to 950C, in 4 to 10 minutes duration). The hot sheet is transferred to a
press machine and immediately stamped in order to take advantage of the excellent formability at
high temperature (600C to 800C). The press machine tool is held closed for 20 seconds for
quenching the sheet below the martensite finish temperature.
Give opinion on the importance of conduction heat transfer in the hot stamping technique from
(15 marks)

the above statements.

SECTION B
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1 (15 MARKS)
In a production facility, 3-cm- thick brass plates that are initially at a uniform temperature of
C are heated by passing them through an oven for a period of time.

The oven temperature is

maintained at 700 C

(a)

Propose a suitable model of heat transfer system for the above engineering problem. Give
justification, if the plates are subjected to convection heat transfer with the surface heat
transfer coefficient of 80 W/m2K
