Physics 130 - a

Dr. Schmidt

Final Exam
Put your name on the front of the blue book. Put all your answers in the blue book. Start a new
page for each problem. Partial credit will be given for incomplete answers. When the exam is over,
fold your test papers in half and place it inside your blue book to hand in.
1. (15 points) For the case of Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) indicate for each of the following
statements whether it is True or False. If the statement is False rewrite it to make the statement
true.
a) SHM is by definition sinusoidal.
b) The term in the equation for SHM y = A cos t stands for angular velocity.
c) The total mechanical energy is proportional to the maximum amplitude.
d) The total mechanical energy is proportional to the instantaneous velocity
e) A SHM oscillator that starts out with zero velocity at maximum amplitude is described using
a cosine function.
2. (10 points) For each of the examples shown below, tell if the pressure indicated is greater than,
equal to, or less than atmospheric pressure Patm. The black lines represent tubes containing a fluid.
The fluid is indicated by the shaded areas. In the examples with the hand, the finger makes a good
seal with the end of the tube.

3.(10 points) Tell which are scalar quantities, vector quantities, or neither.
a) Work, b) Impulse, c) Angular Momentum, d) Torque, e) Moment of Inertia
4. (10 points) Give a definition of physical work, describing all the factors that go into calculating
work (6 points). A common parlor trick is to pull a tablecloth out from underneath a dish. This trick
was demonstrated in class and was the topic of a Myth Busters TV episode. For (4 points) while
the cloth is sliding out from under the dish, will the frictional force of the tablecloth acting on the
dish do positive, negative or no work on the dish? Explain. Assume that there is a non-zero kinetic
coefficient of friction between the cloth and the dish. Hint: must the dish move?

5. Doctors orders say uncle Ed cannot lift more than 80 N. Still he wants to help you carry a long
narrow 1100 N chest that is 6.5 m long. The chest is of uniform density so the CG is exactly in the
center. You assign uncle Ed a position to lift on one end of the chest.
a) (5 points) How far in from the other end do you lift such that his load doesnt exceed 80 N?
b) (5 points) What is the magnitude of the force you exert?
6. (15 points) A bowman with a crossbow shoots a 250 g bolt (the projectile)
into the air at an angle of 30o. In arming the crossbow the bowman had to
exert a force of 35 N to draw the bow back the 10 cm to engage the trigger
mechanism. Assuming the bow to be like a spring, what is the velocity of
the bolt as it leaves the crossbow if the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the bolt and the 10 cm long channel that guides the bolt while being
launched is K = 0.23?
7. (10 points) A 0.218 m diameter bowling ball is essentially a sphere with a mass of
5.9 kg. Moving at a speed of 2.02 m/s, what fraction of the total Mechanical Energy is
taken up by Translational Kinetic Energy? Will this fraction increase with increased speed?
8. (10 points) A potters wheel is a horizontal uniform disk rotating at 2.3 rev/min about a vertical
axis. The wheel has a mass of 3.5 kg and a diameter of 0.45 m. The potter throws a 2.1 kg piece of
clay onto the center of the wheel. The piece of clay can be approximated as a disk of radius 10 cm
and 4 cm high. The clay initially at rest ends up spinning with the wheel. At what rotational speed
does the wheel and clay end having?
9. (10 points) The oscillatory motion of mass lying on a frictionless surface attached to the end of a
horizontal spring is described by the equation x = [0.65 m] cos ([0.42 rad/s] t) . The spring has a
spring constant of 250 N/m. What is the mass?
