Physics 130 - a

Dr. Schmidt
Final Exam

Put your name on the cover of your blue book. Put all your answers in the blue book. Start a new page for
each problem. Partial credit will be given for incomplete answers. When the exam is over, fold your test
paper in half and place it inside your blue book to hand in.
1. (10 points) Which of the following are vectors?
a) normal force. b) work, c) momentum, d) kinetic energy, e) mass. f) weight. g) tension, h) acceleration,
i) displacement, j) moment of inertia.
2.(15 points) Define torque in terms of a force F acting at a radius r
Hinge
from the hinge axis, making an angle with respect to the direction of
r, as shown. Indicate the direction of the torque on the door shown (either into
or out of the page). Can there be a net torque on an object with no net force? Can there
be a net force on an object with no net torque? Explain.

3. (10 points) Which of the following are true for a simple harmonic oscillator consisting of a mass at the
end of a massless spring. There could be more than one true statement.
a) The velocity of the mass is at a maximum when the acceleration is zero.
b) The restoring force is proportional to the displacement but in the opposite direction.
c) The period increases with larger amplitude.
d) The frequency increases with increased mass.
e) The frequency increases with increased spring strength as indicated by a larger spring constant.
4. (10 points) Describe Archimedes Principle for buoyancy. Use it to answer which of two identical
glasses is heavier in each case below. Explain. They could be the same.
a) One glass is filled with just water, and the other is filled with water with a small wooden boat floating
on the surface.
b) One glass is filled with just water and the other is filled with water but has a gold ring at the bottom.
c) One glass is filled with water and the other has a small boat holding a gold ring floating on the
surface.
5. (10 points) A talented barkeep sends a pint of ale in a chilled 0.75 kg glass mug down the length of the
8.5 m bar such that it stops right in front of the patron who ordered it. The coefficient of friction between
the glass and the wet bar surface is such that it decelerates the mug at a rate of 0.42 times the acceleration
of gravity. What initial speed must the barkeep start the mug down the bar?
6. (10 points) In the final stage of its landing approach the 35,000 kg space shuttle moving at 650 m/s
deploys speed brakes and flaps at an altitude of 10,000 m. The shuttle is slowed to a safe landing speed of
110 m/s as it touches down on the runway. How much work did the frictional drag acting on the shuttle
do during this final approach?
7. (10 points) A pirate wants to sink a treasure chest to the bottom of the sea in a shallow location for
safekeeping. The chest with its contents weighs 12,000N but floats with a quarter of the chest above the
level of the seawater whose density is 1025 kg /m3. How much lead must the pirate add to the chest to
make it sink? lead = 11,300 kg/m3.

8. The 7.5 m mast of a sailboat consists of a uniform
forestay
o
aluminum pole of mass 85 kg. It is held in place fore
30
and aft by wires or stays. The forestay is attached at a
point 1.5 m from the top of the mast and is tied to the
bow
bow, making an angle of 30o with the mast. The aftstay
is attached to the very top of the mast and is tied to the
stern. This wire makes a 45o angle with the mast. The
forestay has a tension of 2100 N.
a) (5 points) What is the tension in the aftstay?
b) (5 points) With what force does the deck push up on the mast?

9. I-Max is the large screen panorama movie system that uses the 70 mm film format. An I-max movie
projector reel is huge, having a radius of 55 cm. The reel itself has a negligible mass compared to the
film. A full reel has mass of 165 kg and can be considered a disk. The projector feeds the film through at
a steady rate of 1.5 m/s whether the film is at the start of a reel or at the end of a reel.
a) (5 points) What is the angular speed of the reel at the beginning of the movie, where film is coming
off the top of the reel?
b) (5 points) If the film breaks at a tension in excess of 8.5 N, what maximum angular acceleration
can be achieved by applying this tension to the loose end of the film to start the reel turning?
c) (5 points) How many meters of leader film (blank film at the start before actual the picture begins)
is needed to bring the movie up to speed from a standstill?
