Scott Rives, of Reed City, saunters along beside Santa. The Santa and reindeer decorations are among the many that
adorn a 3 1/2 acre area around Rives home.
Ive been decorating for
Christmas for 30 years, Rives
said. For the last couple of
years, Ive really been going after
it.
In fact, his penchant for decorating has inspired a friendly
family competition. His sisters,
who live in the Luther area, are
putting out decorations that rival
his, Rives said.
Rives thinks a lot more people
should be decorating for Christmas, too. He remembers that
back when he was a child, it
seemed as if everyone put up
Christmas decorations.
He objects to any political correctness that might discourage
a person from decorating for the
season, too.
Christians, Jews and Muslims
should celebrate their holidays
the way they want to and leave
everyone else alone, Rives said.
Rives said he decorates mainly
for his five grandchildren. Ranging in age from 1 to 11, they all
live within five miles of him.
Still, he has no problem with
others enjoying his decorations. In fact, he encourages it.
Although anyone driving by on
Lakola Road can slow down and
get a good look, Rives said those
who want to may pull in the end
of his driveway and park and get
out and look around. To accommodate those who may want to
stop by, Rives even operates on
a schedule. On weekdays, his
lights are on from 6-8 p.m. On
weekends, the lights are on from
6 to 10 p.m. He estimates that during an average evening, between
25 and 50 people drive by to see
his lights. Now they know the
story.
Rives does the decorating, perhaps, but viewers really have his
mothers love of garage-sale decorations to thank for the show.

Homemade hot doughnuts, anyone?
The red and white device
is apparently what every
homemaker needed in the
1950s to easily make the favorite taste-treat for family
and friends.
While a pan of hot oil is
heating on the stovetop,
a bowl of batter is made,
poured into the opening on
top where the red-balled
plunger can then regulate
precisely how much batter is released through the
conical nose at the bottom.
The batter goes directly
into the oil and a fry cake
doughnut is born.
Traditionally, one would
have a firmer dough, roll
that onto a flat surface,
use a cookie/biscuit/
doughnut cutter with the
center hole already part
of the cutting shape, and
then gently transport that
flat cookie-like circle to the
stove, sliding it gently into
the same hot grease.
In both scenarios, the
doughnut floats to the surface of the oil as it cooks
and puffs into shape. It
then needs turning so that
the underside also browns.
