Install Gigabit Ethernet adapters on Windows NT 4.0
If you have Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 already installed and you are adding a new
Gigabit Ethernet
adapter be aware that you need to install Service Pack 4 or later.
If you do not have Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installed and are here because you a
re about to run the
INSWNTSVR command carefully read the following instructions.
Any type of new installation of the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server when using t
he Gigabit Ethernet
Adapters (Feature Codes 2760 or 2743) requires the following additional steps to
be carefully followed:
1. Have Microsoft Service Pack 4.0 or later
2. Locate in the Service Pack the file NDIS.SYS. Rename the file to NDIS.SY_ (No
te the underscore
requirement when renaming).
3. Install the renamed NDIS.SY_ to the following directory of the OS/400 Integra
ted File System
?/QIBM/ProdData/NTAP/Install/Image/Option01/I386? prior to issueing the INSWNTSV
R command. This
Windows server on iSeries 77
can be done using Windows Explorer from a seperate PC, FTP (binary is required)
or OS/400 CPY
command from CD-ROM using the /QOPT file system.
4. When Install Command completes, you should remove the NDIS.SY_ from the IFS d
irectory.
5. Repeat these steps (1-4) every time a new INSWNTSVR command is issued when in
stalling Microsoft
Windows NT 4.0 and Gigabit Ethernet Adapters are present.
If these steps are not followed, the install command will not install the device
driver for the Gigabit
Ethernet Adapters. The steps are extremly import when installing a BDC (Backup D
omain Controller). The
install will not be allowed until the required NDIS.SY_ file is found on the lis
ted directory. The following
Messages will result when failing to follow the above steps. If the INSWNTSVR co
mmand is issued with
DMNROLE(*BKUCTL) and WNTVER(*NT40), the error messages below will appear in the
job log.
