5.5 Trig Identities

Date:

Homework: Pages 310-311: {5, 7, 8} (every other), 11, 12

Extra Practice #1-14

Learning Objectives/Success Criteria: At the end of this lesson I will be able to:
Identify trig identities as a result of a definition or derived from relationships
Prove a given trig identity by showing LS and RS equivalency using different strategies
Identities: are mathematical statements that are true for all values of a given variable. If the identity involves
fractions, the denominator cannot be zero. Any restrictions on a variable must be stated.

Strategies:
Simplify or manipulate each side to get the same expression
Rewrite all trig ratios in terms of x, y and r
Rewrite all expressions involving tangent and the reciprocal trig ratios in terms of sine and cosine
Apply the Pythagorean identity where appropriate
Use a common denominator or factor as required

Examples:
cos
1. Prove the quotient identity cot =
for all angles , where 00 3600 .
sin
2. Prove the Pythagorean identity sin2 +cos2 = 1 for all angles , where 00 3600 .
3. Prove the Pythagorean identity 1+ tan2 = sec2 for all angles , where 00 3600 .
4. Prove csc2 1 = csc2 cos2
5. Prove

cos
cos
+
= 2sec
1+sin 1sin
