back of each armrest where it will wrap the rear leg. Finish with
a 45 bevel cut. See armrest detail.

4. Seat supports The curved seat supports are made up of

2x4 lumber sandwiching either the 4x4 rear legs or the single

36-inch radius cut. Mark the cut to start 3 inches in from the
front. Use a bandsaw to cut the radius to a depth of no more than
1 1 4 inches. Finish the seat supports with a 45 bevel cut to match
the armrests.

Note that the end and center seat supports differ slightly in length
and attachments.

the rear seat rail to each support with two deck screws. Adjust
the spacing of the remaining seat rails before attaching.

This open-ended bench design adds comfortable railing seats to

a new redwood deck. Plan to begin construction before finishing the deck board installation to allow access to the deck
framing. If the deck surface is more than 30 inches from the
ground, the top rail of the bench must be at least 36 inches off
the deck or be in compliance with your local building code.
These plans are based on a 4-foot-long bench section. You can
easily build a longer bench by adding a post for each additional
4 to 6 feet of bench length. Seat supports and legs are required
every 2 to 3 feet.

Redwood
For beauty and performance, redwood is naturally superior to
other woods. Thats why its the first choice for decks, fences and
most outdoor projects. Redwood retains its beauty outdoors,
shrinks and swells less than other woods and is less likely to warp,
split, check or cup. With little or no pitch, redwood is easy to drill,
saw and shape. Redwood heartwood has natural durability and
resistance to insects and will last longer outdoors than most woods.
Grades
The knotty garden grades of redwood are ideal for outdoor projects.
These grades are beautiful, durable and economical.

Construction Heart/Deck Heart is all heartwood and contains knots; used for load-bearing applications near the ground.
Deck Heart is graded for strength and is available in 2x4 and 2x6.
Construction Common/Deck Common contains sapwood
and knots; used for decking and above-ground uses. Deck Common
is graded for strength and is available in 2x4 and 2x6.
Merchantable Heart is all heartwood and contains larger knots
than Construction grades; used near the soil.
Merchantable contains sapwood and larger knots; used for
fence boards, rails and above-ground uses.
Finishes
Redwood accepts finishes better than most woods. Some heighten
redwoods natural beauty, bringing out the color and the grain.
Others help the wood harmonize or contrast with surrounding
structures. Keep in mind that unfinished redwood will gradually
turn soft driftwood gray. Read the labels on all finish products
before using.

Clear water repellent finish is recommended to stabilize the

color at tan.

Semitransparent stains in redwood shades tint the wood

without hiding the grain.

Solid-color stains or paints should be applied over compatible

oil-based primers.
Fasteners
Use only non-corrosive hardware such as aluminum, stainless
steel or top quality hot-dipped galvanized screws or nails.
Ordinary nails and screws will cause stains.

DIFFERENT!
Don't spend hundreds of
dollars on a swing set your
children will get bored with.
Build them this larger swing
set which rivals the swing
radius of school playground swings. Children get bored with the
short swing radius swingsets purchased from your local retail
store. The swing radius on this set is more than 2 feet longer
which means more fun for the children.

Why Every Woodworker Needs a Bench Grinder

If I were to ask a group of average woodworkers to give me their lists of essential
woodworking power tools, I doubt that the words "bench grinder" would eminate
from too many lips. However, I'm here to say that a bench grinder should be a tool
found in every woodworker's shop. Why?

In a single word: support.

While a bench grinder won't have too many
direct applications in the wood shop, it can be
invaluable for providing support to the
woodworker in keeping their woodworking tools
running in top shape. For instance, you can use
your bench grinder for sharpening chisels,
gouges and drill bits. You can use it for making
any necessary modifications to hinges, latches
or other metal objects used in your woodworking
projects. And if you're a "weekend warrior woodworker", chances are that the tools

A Woodworker's Fashion Statement

How many woodworkers do you think get up in the morning and say to
themselves, "What to wear, what to wear, what to wear?" Most woodworkers
probably grab the top shirt in the drawer, the top pair of jeans in another drawer
and get ready to work. However, I'm here to say that there should be a little more
thought put into the day's attire than blindly grabbing some clothes out of the
dresser.
Why? Because the clothes you choose may save your life.
There are some criteria you should consider when dressing to work in the wood
shop, and the choices have little to do with fashion or aesthetics. More importantly,
you should choose clothing articles which fit you rather tightly, and provide proper
coverage. A wardrobe malfunction in the workshop could cost you a lot more than
it cost Janet Jackson.
Learn the woodworker's "fashion do's and don'ts" in Wear Appropriate Clothing.
You may find yourself surprised at how important this seemingly benign topic really
is.

Woodworking Accessories for Every Shop

When most beginning woodworkers start to outfit their workshop, they focus their
budget on the power tools, and, to a lesser extent, hand tools. While there's
certainly nothing wrong with that approach, it is easy to overlook some very useful,
and often necessary, shop accessories.
The article Woodworking Accessories for Every Shop details the top 10 shop
accessories that no woodworker should be without. From a woodworker's bench
complete with a vise and bench dogs to an assortment of woodworking jigs, this is
a list that you should keep in mind when planning your purchases. However, the
best part is that most of the items on this list are either quite inexpensive, or can be
built for free right in your workshop. And, as far as I'm concerned, free is the best
price any tool could have.

For Those in Wisconsin or New England

If you live anywhere close to Milwaukee or Providence, here's something you
might be interested in. The 1st Annual Milwaukee Fine Furnishings Show is
coming up on September 23 & 24 at the Midwest Airlines Center. 150 artisans
from across North America will display and sell their work over these two days.
While you may not be interested in buying any of these pieces, these shows
definitely give a woodworker the opportunity to be inspired by the work of others,
and to be able to rub elbows and trade ideas with some truly talented craftsmen
(and women, of course).
If Rhode Island is a bit closer to home, the 11th Annual Providence Fine
Furnishings Show will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center on October
27-29. Both shows promise to be amazing, based upon the gallery of items shown
on their website.
If you're interested in visiting either show, check out the Fine Furnishings Show
website for location and ticket information. If you find any really cool ideas, please
return and share them on our Forum.

Choose the Proper Router for Your Needs

Routers are among the most versatile power tools in the woodworker's arsenal.
Why? Perhaps it's because there are so many tasks that can be accomplished with
a router, depending on the bit employed. Whether easing an edge, creating a
rabbet or dado, or creating a custom piece of molding, you need to have the right
router. Too large of a router may be cumbersome (and possibly unsafe), while too
small of a unit may not have enough horsepower to get the job done.
Additionally, you need to determine whether you
should employ a stationary base router or a
plunge router. What's the difference? A plunge
router has a base that allows you to plunge the
bit directly downward into the wood tp begin the
cut, and then back out again once the cut is
completed. A stationary base router doesn't
provide this option, but is typically not quite as
large and cumbersome, and may be easier to
handle.
How do you know what type and size of a router
you need? You may find some answers to your questions in Stationary & Plunge
Routers. In this article, we dissect the advantages and disadvantages of both types

of routers, to help you choose the right tool for your needs.

Book Review of "Understanding Wood"

There are very few books that I think every every woodworker should own, but R.
Bruce Hoadley's "Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood
Technology" definitely qualifies. Hoadley's masterpiece is widely regarded as THE
resource for understanding how and why wood reacts the way that it does.
Now, I will be honest and tell you that this isn't exactly a page turner. Nobody will
ever confuse Hoadley's writing style with Michael Crichton or Tom Clancy. This
book is written much like a college textbook, which makes sense considering Dr.
Hoadley's academic background.
However, when it comes to learning the properties of wood, how to identify
different species, and how wood reacts to the environment around it, there is no
better resource anywhere. As such, a copy of Understanding Wood: a Craftsman's
Guide to Wood Technology belongs in every wood shop.

Tips for Staining Furniture

As a woodworker, my personal preference in wood finishes leans toward stains
and clear coat finishes as opposed to paint. I figure that if I'm going to spend the
amount of time that I do on building a piece of furniture, why in the world would I
want to cover up all of that effort with paint? Yes, there are times when I'll break
down and paint a piece, but in my mind, that approach certainly goes against the
grain (so to speak).
That being said, there's a little more to staining a piece than just going to the home
center, finding that particular shade of walnut or cherry that looks nice on the can
and then slapping it onto the piece. In actuality, there's a LOT more to it. Getting
the desired results by staining is practically an art form in and of itself. However,
there are some basic guidelines that will make the process much simpler.
In Refinishing Furniture: Tips for Staining Furniture, About's Interior Decorating
Guide Glenna Morton gives you a very thorough two-page checklist of items to
consider and steps to follow when staining a new piece or refinishing an old piece
of furniture. Whether this is your first attempt at staining or you're an old pro, these
tips should help you get the results you want from your staining project.
