My dear Sir:
A week or so ago I had informed Mr.Smith of a
gross misrepresentation I had come across and told him I would
send him copies soon as X had them. He has just wired me that another
search of his home had been made and that I should send copies
direct to you.
T^is I do.
First.you w ill note a copy of what purports to be
a picture of the First Rosicrucian Temple in America. This illu s tr a tio
appears in AMORC latest publication THE WISDOM OF THE SAGES and
which is universally circulated and-the medium through which he
obtains members.
Next, I inclose a copy of a picture that appears
in the book by SaChe of Philadelphia* The t it le of book is : The
P ietists of Pennsylvania. You w ill note that this is NOT a Rosicrucian
Temple but was b u ilt by-the Zionistic Brotherhood, a Seventh Day
Baptist denomination.
You w ill see at once that this Baptist
Monastery ha been embellished to suit and made to appear as a
Rosicrucian habitation.

Respected Member and Student:

From our statistics and records it appears as though a ;;reat
many members of the Masonic Fraternity are interested in
higher thought, metaphysics, and problems of psycholojy and
philosophy*
In fa c t, we are surprised to note that our nember
ship records indicate a great nany of the men to be Masons,
members of the higher bodies, as well as the Blue Lodge,
Since there is an interest in these studies among Masons,
perhaps we co-aid forvmrd to them some interesting lit t le
free booklets of an attractive nature, which explain the
ideals and principles of the AMORC, and permit the receivers
to know of the fascinating studies of the Order.
I note
that you are a member of the Masonic Fraternity. I f it is
possible for you to do so, and proper, we would appreciate it
if you w uld send us the names and addresses of some Masons
in your community, or in your Lodge whom you think would enjoy
reading some of our latest publications which exi>lain the work
of the Rosicrucians,
It is not necessary that these Masons be persons that you
know so long as they are Masons. I f it is permissible, and you
can do so, we would like to have you send a rost-r of the
names and addresses of those in your Lodge so that we can
address booklets to them, and return the roster to you.
May we have your cooperation in this?
If we can, we would
appreciate having you give this matter your attention as soon
as po ssible.

Dear Mr, Drake:
We wish you to know that we are sincerely grateful
for the complete information you have sent to us about the
Rosicrucian Society. Yours is the first complaint we have
had at>out them. You say that the organization is shortly to
he exposed throughout the country. We are intensely inter
ested in knowing what happens.
If it is not too much trouble,
will you drop us a note at the time the exposure proceedings
are started that we may get the newspapers or other records
in which the details will "be given.
Qaite frankly, we are not in a position to suggest
an investigation by the Better Business Bureau for the
simple reason that we have no facts upon which to base such
a request. Our knowledge of the society is, as you say,
only a general one. As aforesaid, we shall be glad to have
you add to our meager information by sending to us, i f you
have time, the details of the proceedings which you mention.

Dear Mr. Drake
We have been running the advertising of the Rosicrucian Brotherhood for. several years.
Before accepting the
advertising we made an investigation of it and received favor
able information on the organization.
We have, however, in the past received complaints,
not from readers of our publication, but from outside sources.
These were investigated, however, and we did not feel that they
were justified.
However, I would suggest that you communicate with

Attention Mr, Charles H* Pesgrey:
Dear sir:
I thank you fo r your letter of the
21st ultimo and w il l now tell you my reasons
for asking the question concerning the organiza
tion styled as AlflORC:
At one time I was a member of this
organization and was told and led to believe that
it had an origin in remote antiquity*
Having
learned that such claims were not based upon any
foundation in fa o t, and seeing their advertisement
in so many reputable magazines, I wrote to you to
see if you had anything upon which to base these
statements, thinking perhaps that there were some
things which 1 might have overlooked*
But your
reply is somewhat general and shows you do not know
many things that others do.
In the fir s t place, in
1929, when the Los Angeles Branch discovered some
puxzeling things, there was a general disruption
and' nearly a l l the members here left the organiza
tion, whereupon AMORC promptly sued D r . E. E .
Thomas, the then Master of this Branch, for 5 0 ,0 0 0 .
damages, claiming that he broke up the organization.
Last year a man by the name of George L*
Smith of B a k e r s f i e l d ,'C a l i f . ; wrote snd published
many things concerning AMORC, purporting to deny the
ancient origin of this organization and claiming that
the people at large were being swindled by reason of
these statements and that there was no authentic proof
that this was other than the concoction of its Head
in 1915.
"There is nothing secret about the organi
zation.
The Rituals and everything have been published
in a book by A. E . Waite.
In other wordsf' this man
took out of the reference library the necessary ele
ments to form a so-called secret order, claiming that it
originated in Ancient Egypt many hundreds of years a g o ".
(p 'i f Y )

Mr. Smith was arrested for lib e l but the case

oame to nothing and was thrown out of court. Last
December Mr. ^mith and D r . E. E. 1homaB were sued
jointly for $1 0 ,0 0 0 * damages for some sort of a con
spiracy which both claim was absurd.
Incidentally
it might interest you to know that ALflORC lost the
$ 5 0 ,0 0 0 . cast against Dr. Thomas, but It was not
proved by the testimony in court that AMORC was an
original, authentic Rosicrucian Order
I and several others have learned that this
institution is shortly to be exposed throughout the
length and bredth of the land. Hence my interest
in the whole proceedings.
I f you have anything else to offer we would
appreciate i t . We want to give the devil his dues
but we don't want people to be swindled in any way,
and I think it is my duty to prevent it as far as I
can, and the duty of anyone else who may be of a id ,
in keeping honest f o l k 's money out of the hands of
charletons.
* Why do you not have the Better business Bureau
make an investigation? For a while the Better
Business Bureau gave AMORC the name of owning property,
paying its b i l l s , e t c ., but there was no in vesti
gation as to the statements AMORC was making.
It might
be well to have this done so that we can a ll know the
Truth.

Dear Mr. Drake;
Regarding your letter about the Eosi crucian
brotherhood, T?e examined the literature which they put out
and it seemed to us that most of their doctrines paralleled
the teachings of Christianity.
Therefore, we accepted their
advertising.
It seems to us that the value of any move
ment such as theirs must be judged oy the value to the
individual himself - some people may find the Rosicrucian
teachings helpful, while others may not be interested. We
are sorry not to be able to make a more helpful statement
then that, but you understand that such a decision is a
personal one which must be made separately by each man or
woman.
Their announcements have appeared in our
pages for a number of years and none of our readers have
ever complained aoout their business integrity.
Very truly yours,

This i s , of course a
