From Your Pastor

Do you have expectations? For yourself? For
your family? For your church? Most of us would
have to answer that question as a yes. There are certain things that you expect in this life. You expect
that you are going to take care of personal needs.
You expect your family to love each other and be
there when they are needed. You expect your
church to assist you on your spiritual journey from
birth to death. But did you know that if we are going to be the church God intends us to be, then there
are certain expectations that we need to have for
our church and each other? Dr. Thom Rainer has
listed six characteristics of churches that are doing
just that. These churches (he calls them disciplemaking churches) have a higher attendance and
lower dropout rate, so I wanted to share these six
characteristics with you.
1. The church has an entry point class that all
new members attend. The classes provide information, but they arent limited to dispensing
facts about the church. The classes also establish
expectations of members.
2. Members are expected to attend an open group
Bible study. An open group is an ongoing class
that allows entry at any point. Historically, they
have been called Sunday School classes, but today they have a variety of names. The point is to
get members connected to a common group of
people in regular Bible study.
3. Members are expected to be involved in one
or more deeper studies throughout the year.

Welcome to 2016!

I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families! As much as I enjoyed
the break, I missed seeing your precious children! I'm very much looking forward to getting back to our regular schedule. Awana will
resume on January 7th. We have some special
nights coming up including "Hot Chocolate and Smores
Night". There are also a few surprises in store for the coming weeks so you won't want to miss it!
Our Sunday evening schedule will resume on January 11th
at 5:00pm. We will kick off the new year with two new Bible studies during the 6:00pm hour. We will start with a
New Year's themed study based on Psalm 150:6. In these
lessons we will learn about the joy and excitement we can
find when live for God every day. The end of January the
children will start "Playing for God's Team". This is a football themed Bible study that teaches about putting God first
in our lives. I think both of these are going to be excellent
studies for starting off 2015!
Believe it or not, Vacation Bible School will be here before we know it. June 8th - 12th our halls will be full with
children who need to hear that God loves them. Please
prayerfully consider where He might have you serve in VBS
this year.
Wishing you a blessed New Year,
Tanya

Awana resumes
Jan. 6th at 6 p.m.
Thank You...
Thank You to everyone who volunteered at CCC during the month of December
to assist in the Clothes Closet. This is a fantastic ministry but could not operate
and do what they do without volunteers. Your work was certainly appreciated.

Women on Mission
WOM will meet Tuesday, January 5th at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will
continue to collect warm socks through January. We will be mixing hot chocolate
and assembling bags to distribute to the teachers in the Decatur City Schools.
Lunch will be chili and will be arranged. Please come and bring someone.

Adult Breakfast Fellowship

You are invited to fellowship with us on Saturday, January 2nd at 8:30 a.m. at

Men, our brotherhood breakfast will be Sunday,
January 3rd at 8 a.m. By popular request, Ret. Judge
David Breland will be our guest speaker. He was
scheduled to be with us in November, but due to
unexpected surgery, he had to decline. While serving
in Juvenile Court, he changed the paths of many
young people from wrong to right and they went on
to live productive lives. Since retirement he has been
busy working with civic organizations including overseeing renovation of the Decatur Train Depot. It will
be an honor to have David Breland as our guest.

Continued from Page One

These classes are set for a predetermined number

of weeks, a 12-week study for example. They
tend to dive deeper into Bible study, doctrinal
study or studies of critical issues for the Christian.
4. Members are expected to attend a corporate
worship service each week. This is the time for
the people to gather for the preaching of the
Word and to worship the one true God together.
5. Members are expected to be involved in at
least one ministry or mission activity a year. The
church has clear expectations that members are
to be involved in those activities that cause them
to look beyond themselves and to care for the
physical, emotional and spiritual needs of others.
6. Members are expected to read and study the
Bible daily. Research has shown that daily personal Bible study is the clearest indicator that a
Christian is growing spiritually. Disciple-making
churches exhort, encourage and provide resources for the members to be involved in daily
Bible study.
What do you think about these characteristics?
My hope is that you will study these carefully and
join me in incorporating these characteristics into
Southside Baptist Church in 2016.
Looking forward to a new year!
