A WORD FROM
MICHAEL CHAPLIN
Our family is very enthusiastic about supporting
the creation of the Charlie Chaplin Museum on the
grounds of our former family estate situated in
Corsier-Sur-Vevey, Switzerland. With its three
thousand square metres of substantial and
avant-garde exhibits, the museum dedicated to
Charlie Chaplin's life and work will stand apart
as a new museographic reference showcasing
the very latest technological advances in all its
various exhibits. Our father knew how to tell
stories, knew how to make us laugh and also
possessed great humanitarian sensitivity. A
museum dedicated to his existence and career is
a great honour for him and for all of us, but it is
above all a homage to life. We hope he would
have been proud to share his former home with
the rest of the world, and we are honoured to
be a part of this great project.

PROJECT
OVERVIEW
An authentic site, a venue of comedic and poignant discoveries
The Charlie Chaplin Museum offers the visiting public hours of discovery and emotion spread over
fourteen hectares of gardens, pathways, the manor-house and outbuildings transformed into a showcase
of animation and exhibits primarily inspired by the works of Charlie Chaplin. The main intention behind
the project is to reinvest the Manoir de Ban with the same character and ambience as when it was
home to the illustrious artist, and then open its doors to the public. In this way, visitors will gain touching
insights into the filmmaker, as well as the worldview that inspired or motivated the scenarios of his
greatest masterpieces.
The experience offered to the public strives to be remarkable, substantial, spectacular, moving and
humorous, with an invitation to tour his private manor house. The outbuildings include exhibits and
galleries highlighting Chaplins work, as well as multimedia presentations, including an amazing
retrospective of his earliest silent movies that conquered the hearts of the entire world. The site concept
is creative and innovative, with state-of-the-art technology. It combines the traditional world of cinema
with avant-garde scenography, including animated sets, holograms, virtual characters, computer graphics,
a 3D environment, light and special effects as well as THX surround sound.
Hollywood New Exhibition Hall

The project to establish a major site dedicated to Charlie Chaplin is the culmination of a series of
documented and carefully audited studies and enjoys the unanimous support of communal, cantonal
and federal government authorities in Switzerland. Above all, the project is backed by the Chaplin
family. This is the very first time they have given their support to a project of this scope since the
artists death in 1977.

A DESIGN
FOR A MUSEUM OF THE

A mixture of tradition and daring

The architectural approach suggests the typical
Swiss union of tradition and daring. The form,
rhythm and texture of materials express modernity
respectful of the heritage of the buildings and
green space left by the artist and filmmaker. Glass,
steel and concrete unite by day in a reflection of
the surrounding green space. By night, they light
up in a warm and bathing glow to participate in a
symphony of light embracing the entire park.
The Manoir, so well preserved, is an intimate
space allowing the discovery of the ambiance
and souvenirs of an artist and his family who
entertained many close friends and celebrities from
the 20th Century. The well-preserved surroundings
of the farm accommodate the ticket office, public
services, food centre and gift shop. The wide-open

+ 24

space features a mezzanine offering a breathtaking frontal view of the lake and mountains.
The old garage fuses history with the present with
its magnificent window design gracing the two
adjoining terraces and their glass and aluminum
pergolas. A glass passage reminiscent of the former
greenhouse leads to the new exhibition hall with
more than 2000 square metres of space devoted
to the life and cinematographic work of Chaplin
the artist and filmmaker. Disarming effects in
alignment and pattern add rhythm to a glass,
concrete and steel building that in spite of its huge
size, never seems to overshadow the surrounding,
green environment.
The overall perspective of the architecture
intermingled with the fabulous garden offers a
particularly warm and spectacular visual dynamic
at twilight or at night. The transparency of the

Chaplins World - The Modern Times Museum

garage and its openings, the unifying glass wall

of the multimedia theatre, the reflective surfaces
of textured steel and concrete, and disarming effects
in alignment and pattern of the imposing structure
provide great depth and feel to a lighting concept
as architectural as it is panoramic. On festive
nights, the building stands in the soft shadows of
a fabulous garden bathing in a symphony of light.

A civil engineering challenge at the centre

of a splendid garden
The new building housing the future Charlie Chaplin
Museum is cube-shaped and 55 metres long by
17 metres wide. The structure consists of a
basement and ground floor offering 2000 square
metres of exhibition space built along the existing
garage. The building is characterized by disarming

structural effects in the architectural concept,

long spans created by vast spaces adapted to
museography, visible reinforced concrete facades
and the integration of an existing building. These
specificities represented a civil engineering feat
in the context of an architectural intervention
seeking harmonious integration with existing
buildings and the remarkable grounds and
surrounding vegetation.

THE INTEGRAL
PRESERVATION
OF A FABULOUS PARK
At the Manoir de Ban, built patrimony and plant
heritage provide a remarkable ensemble perfectly
showcasing and preserving garden art from the
mid 19th Century. The landscape design developed
for the Charlie Chaplin Museum had two main
goals: to highlight the original composition and
progressively renew the dendrology heritage
though a process of restoration of the park, and
to integrate new, exterior additions (access and
parking areas) to the museological concept and
to the exceptional green layout of the site itself.
To achieve this, the architectural team viewed the
sight as Charlie Chaplin would have viewed it.
The team preserved the integrity of the park that
had so attracted the artist and filmmaker in the
first place, locating parking areas below and on
the fringes of the great lawn where he had built
the tennis court, pool, pool house and other small
amenities. In line with the principle of landscaped
parking, areas for cars are spread out and highly
vegetated. These are the contemporary components of the park: a path along which the visitor,
once he has left his automobile, finds himself in
the world of Charlie Chaplin, following the winding
pathway with its ever changing views of the manor,
bushes and plantings dear to the artists heart,
including the species of bamboo used to make
his famous cane.

+ 28

ENGINEERING +
LANDSCAPING
Geothermy and solar energy
The Charlie Chaplin Museum is designed with
green concerns and visitor comfort in mind. The
green engineering of the project is based on the
maximization of natural, endogenous resources
such as the production of energy using heat
pumps associated with geothermal pipes and
those of solar resources in the production of
sanitary hot water. Visitor comfort is ensured
by high-performance air-exchange and energy
recovery systems.

Thermal envelopes have been studied to minimize

loss and favour solar input. Historic considerations
regarding the envelope were also taken into account
in the preservation of the unique character of
the Manoir de Ban, while improving its energy
performance. The new part of the museum meets
low energy consumption building standards such
as Minergie. Technical facilities, also green and
energy compliant, are integrated symbiotically
into the exceptional architecture and natural
surroundings of the site.

CHAPLINS IMAGE
& ESSENCE
The Charlie Chaplin Image & Essence

The Little Tramps Image & Essence

Charlie Chaplins work is universal

The Little Tramp is funny

Chaplin created a work of art with human themes that touch each and every one of us all over the
planet. In his silent movies, Chaplins message transcends cultures and continents to offer a wordless
common denominator of emotion. People everywhere can recognize themselves in the world and
characters he created. In that sense, Charlie Chaplin is a citizen of the world.

The Tramp finds himself in funny situations that always make people laugh. He laughs at human
absurdity and uses humour to overcome it. Chaplin used to say, We must laugh in the face of our
helplessness and he inspired this with a palette of universal emotions to create works that blend both
laughter and tears.

Charlie Chaplin as a humanist

The Little Tramp is romantic

He is an icon who personifies the hope for a better world and symbolizes ordinary people aspiring
to a better life. His solidarity and goodness feed our continuous quest for happiness.

The Tramp is a kind seducer who wears his heart on his sleeve. Women love to be in his presence.
He gives them laughs, tenderness and roses.

Charlie Chaplin as avant-garde

The Little Tramp is noble

He symbolizes innovation, audacity and difference, someone who stands out from the crowd.
He dared to go against the flow and succeeded.

Beneath his sloppy outfit hides someone who cares about acting with dignity. His bowler hat, cane,
frock and unique original style reflect a noble and distinctive character.

Charlie Chaplin and the Little Tramp are both winners

The Little Tramp is rebellious

Charlie Chaplin became the most well known and beloved artist of the 20th Century and the Little
Tramp is still the ideal image of the triumph of good over evil. The ending is always a victory, whether
for Charlie Chaplin or The Little Tramp.

The Tramp has rebellious attributes: he embodies the alternative, thinks and lives outside the box and
is a dignified outsider who creates happy endings.

Partnership and Sponsoring Levels

Corporate Sponsoring

The project developers have all the necessary

agreements in hand to begin site development:
access to the site, development plan, access to
family assets, right to use the Chaplin image for
the museum purposes and long-term museum
operation rights. The Charlie Chaplin Museum is
offering opportunities for a rare undertaking to
select corporations, institutions and individuals
who wish to support a unique project and to
achieve worldwide visibility that conveys a
strong and positive image.

It is paramount for the Charlie Chaplin Museum

Foundation to create certain exclusive partnerships
with very select corporations whose mission
and/or goal is in line with Chaplins life and work.
These partnerships will take the form of several
opportunities offering the greatest exponential
outreach. Depending on the level of sponsoring,
visibility includes: presence on all forms of
promotional material, on-site guides, museum
information, special events and festival brochures,
signage on the site, Web presence, public relations
and publicity, VIP events, museum facades,
priority access to the Manoir VIP lounge, premieres,
receptions, conferences, openings, etc.

SPONSORING
Foundation Contributions and Donations

Individual Contributions

The Charlie Chaplin Museum invites foundations

with a humanistic and cultural mission to be part of
the project. Donations can also create partnerships
that promote the contributing foundations goals
through use of the Chaplin image. The nature of
the visibility offered will be subject to discussion
based on the contributing foundations policy. When
defining a sponsorship strategy, the Charlie Chaplin
Museum will take into account the contributing
foundations particular characteristics, needs and
values.

Individual contributions are mainly for individuals

who wish to contribute on a personal level to the
Charlie Chaplin Museum Foundations achievements. Donations could, for instance, be used
for specific museography and cinematographic
content on request in a field that could be of
special interest to the donor. Donors names will
be mentioned on the Museum documentation for
visitors and their names engraved on a bronze
plaque in the welcome centre and displayed on
the Chaplin Walk of Fame located alongside the
exhibition building.
