Part three. The introduction

The main theme of this project are the external treatments applied on the hull of a boat, which
are essential to prevent its corrosion and any marine biological element. Those two facts are a
great enemy for the shipbuilding industry since the construction of the first boats.
The deterioration of marine structures is due to salt water and meteorological conditions. It is
easy to see when the external surfaces of the vessel begin to wear down showing a bad look of
the boat, but the biggest problems are inside, and could cause a gradual degradation of the
ship. This term is a fundamental part for the environment, for the safety of the people and for
the boat. This is a huge problem that will be studied in the project to find a way to decrease it.
Current methods will be explained for the treatment of different kind of surfaces. Some
examples of this methods are the followings, sanding, painting, using sacrificial anodes, and
much more.
The best way to minimize the harmful effects of corrosion is prevention and the preventive
maintenance. A vessel in poor conditions does not provide the necessary guarantee to do its
tasks in a safe way. Here is justified the anticorrosion treatment.
This report will be done in different stages. It will begin talking about the basic treatments and
will evolve to new treatments of the present and future. Information from different sources
will be sought from books, webpages and from some experts from the industry. Finally, it will
ends with a short practical case in a shipyard.
