Join several members of our Peace and Justice group at an orientation
meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28, 7-8:30pm for the Village Support Network.
This is a training for people who volunteer to assist a family transitioning
from temporary to permanent housing. For more information, go to
www.newcityinitiative.net. A good way to celebrate 1016 the year of Mercy.

NEW YEARS WISH LIST

We have a short wish list of items needed by the parish. The wish list is: 1)
piano cover for the spinet that is now in Carvlin Hall; 2) hand rails for the two
side altars- tabernacle and Blessed Mother - to make them safer. If you are
interested in contributing to either of these items, please contact Fr. Charlie
or Jeanne McPherson in the business office, 503-231-4955.
We are waiting for a bid on the handrails and will let you know when we
have a price.

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST FATHERS
They will see more clearly the omnipresence of God, His essential relations
with all creation as the Lifegiver, Primary Mover and sustainer of all things. In
Him we live, and move, and are, says St. Paul. On this basis, the rational and
natural side of creation ill become and object of study, admiration and worship,
at the same time with the supernatural side. They will esteem Science as one
of the great Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and show a ready and hearty welcome to
all truths and discoveries in every branch of knowledge. For all truth is divine.
[On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP, at
202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

Pastoral Corner
Pope Francis has declared 2016 the Year of Mercy, here is a brief overview of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of
Mercy. For more information, reflections, prayers, and suggestions on how to practice these check out the USCCB
(United States Catholic Conference of Bishops) and the Vatican Year of Mercy websites.
The Corporal Works of Mercy
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all
others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily
needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.
There are seven Corporal Works of Mercy:
Feed the hungry
Give drink to the thirsty
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit the prisoners
Bury the dead
Give alms to the poor
The Spiritual Works of Mercy
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians
and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to,
these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs" (USCCA).
The seven Spiritual Works of Mercy:
Counseling the doubtful
Instructing the ignorant
Admonishing the sinner
Comforting the sorrowful
Forgiving injuries
Bearing wrongs patiently
Praying for the living and the dead
How will you practice mercy in your daily life? This is a wonderful opportunity to embrace the core values of the
teachings Jesus left us and to enrich your faith.
