2014/15 SPRING

Due on Wednesday, April 22, 2015! Submit it in the class!

You have to submit your LAB REPORT both as a hard copy (i.e. printed version)
and as a soft copy (i.e. Bring it with you in a memory stick)
File Name Format: Surname1_ Surname2 _ Surname3 _LabReport1_2014_15.doc(x)
Please, do not e-mail any documents! Late reports will not be accepted!
You can include your figures within the text with proper figure captions (just below the figure)
explaining in detail what the figures are showing. If you present a table, the table caption should be
at the top of the table. Also, if you present any equations enumerate them and justify your text.
PROBLEMS
Solve following problems related to digital signal processing. Present key results that you
obtained. Use figures to support your discussion.
Free to use MATLAB, MathCAD, LabVIEW or similar (Fortran, etc.),

Keep the original question and write your answers after each questions.
(Q1) For the SDoF system below having k=3.0 106 N/m, m=200 kg, and c=550 Ns/m.

(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)
(f)

Obtain receptance, mobility and accelerance FRFs for the frequencies up to 100Hz for
undamped and damped systems separately and perform below for each FRF;
Plot [Modulus of FRF vs. Frequency (Hz)] and [Phase (deg) vs. Frequency(Hz)]
Plot [Modulus of FRF (dB) vs. Frequency (Hz) in log scale]
Plot [Real part of FRF vs. Imaginary part of FRF] for four different damping values of c, 10
c, 25 c and 50 c. Comment about the circularity of the Nyquist plots and the centre of the
circles.
Indicate mass and stiffness lines on each FRFs and verify the slopes for different selected
values.
By chancing the damping for several different values you select, plot damping line on each
FRFs.
For the same system, how will [Real part of FRF vs. Imaginary part of FRF] look like for
structural damping case for h=c N/m, h= 10 c N/m and h= 25 c N/m. Comment about the
circularity of the Nyquist plots and the centre of the circles.

Compare all the results!

(Q2) By using your recorded force data obtained via Impact Hammer [N] by using three
different hammer tips;
Data with Aluminium Tip: Aluminium0X.txt
Data with Plastic Tip: Plastic0X.txt
Data with Rubber Tip: Rubber0X.txt
X stands for the number of different trial (i.e. individual test).
For this question, the test data (Assignment2_Data.rar) is given in the following format;
Colum 1: Counter
Colum 2: Time [s]
Colum 3: Force in [N]
(a) What is the sampling frequency?
(b) Plot force amplitude [N] vs. time [s].
(c) What is the frequency content of these signals? (Plot in dB vs. Hz)
Compare and comment about all your answers. How does the tip of the hammer affect the
obtained signal shape, magnitude and frequency spectrum? Use all five recorded data set in
your calculations** and compare with Fig.1 below.
**Hint: You can use averaging!
