Childrens Offering

St. Michael Parish Council will meet on January 19th at 6:30

p.m.

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. We all know the story of how John the
Baptist called on the people of Judah to repent and be baptized in order to prepare the way of the
Lord. But what puzzles all of us is when Jesus comes forward and asks John to Baptize him as well.
Since Jesus was totally without sin there should have been no need for Jesus to be baptized. Why
then was Jesus asking to be baptized? As it happens John the Baptist was thinking the exact same
questions that we do today. He stares at Jesus and says I should be baptized BY thee, and yet you
come to me? But Jesus still insists that it should be done, he tells John, Let us do it to fulfill all
righteousness. John then baptizes Jesus and immediately something amazing happens. The clouds
part and the Holy Spirit like a dove falls down upon Jesus and a great voice (the voice of the Father)
speaks clearly, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him! So what are we
to make of all of this? First of all, it is clear that Jesus was truly without sin. He had no sin to repent
of. So obviously he was not asking to be baptized to be free of sin. Something else was going on.
What was it? First I believe that Jesus was being anointed King and Messiah. In ancient times,
among both Jews and non-Jews, it was customary to anoint people when they became kings or
priests. By the word anointing what we mean is that olive oil was poured from a jar over the
persons head (usually in large quantities). This signified that God had chosen this person for a
special task. The most famous incident of anointing occurs in the first book of Samuel. God had
chosen Saul to be king but Saul had proved disobedient. God rejected Saul as king and told Samuel
to go and anoint a new king. He told Samuel that the new king would be among the sons of Jesse in
Bethlehem. Samuel went to Bethlehem and found David (Jesses youngest son) shepherding sheep.
Samuel poured his holy oil over Davids head and anointed him king, and he of course became the
ever-famous King David. So Jesus is here clearly fulfilling the prophetic example of David. Jesus is
going to the holy prophet of John and being anointed by him The Priest-Prophet-King of Israel.
He is also being anointed the Messiah, the One and True and Only savior of all the human race.
Only, instead of oil, John anoints Jesus with the Holy Spirit which comes down like a dove upon his
head. As God, Jesus already possessed all authority and rights as King of Kings. But it was the will
of the Father that Jesus as human be granted that authority in a solemn ceremony of anointing by
the Holy Spirit through the holy prophet John. Jesus here is also establishing the holy Sacrament of
Baptism. The baptism of John was merely a symbol of ones repentance. One would go and be
immersed by John in order to give a visible sign of the interior resolve to leave a life of sin and be
cleansed of ones sins. It was a good symbol but the actual baptism effected nothing. But with his
own baptism in the Jordan by John, Jesus transformed Johns baptism into his own, new, and
brilliant creation. Now Jesus has sanctified the waters of the earth and made them the means by
which our sins can be forgiven. He has invested so to speak, water with the power of the Holy
Spirit. Now, with the proper ritual, the right intention, and using the right words (I baptize you in
the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit), we can share in the very baptism of Jesus at
the Jordan and by that holy and solemn union, be cleansed of our own sins, a cleansing so deep that
it leaves our souls shining with the Holy Brilliance of the angels. And, with Jesus new baptism, one
does not even have to understand for it to work. Thus little infants can be baptized and have their
Original Sin washed away. And it is by means of this New Baptism, that our souls are reclaimed by
God and given that new life which makes us members of Christs body and Christs kingdom. By
going into the depths of the water with Christ, we share in his death, and by rising with him, we
share in his Resurrection. Thus Jesus baptism in the Jordan is something that each of us shared in
and became children of God at the moment that we ourselves were baptized.
