Introduction
Fundamentals
1.1
Introduction
Inventory Manager can be used with the HiPath 2000, HiPath 3000 and HiPath 5000 communication systems. You can quickly and efficiently obtain a complete overview of all integrated
components and installed applications in the HiPath network. For service technicians, the
quick, concise overview which can be called up for the version numbers of all communication
servers in the network (HiPath 2000, HiPath 3000 and HiPath 5000) can be particularly useful.
All you have to do is start the Inventory Manager in a Web browser for immediate access to
information on all components in the HiPath network.
The Inventory Manager provides options for performing the following actions:
checking information on all HiPath 2000, HiPath 3000 and HiPath 5000 systems in the HiPath network (ComScendo services) and associated boards (for example, hardware version).
checking information on all applications and operating systems that are installed on the
PCs in the network (for example, software version).
generating an inventory report that provides a summary of all components and applications in
the HiPath network
accessing information from any PC in the network (with possible restrictions due to firewall)

Introduction
The Inventory Manager also lets you open further Serviceability Web services, such as the
Software Manager, over the portal. You can use the Software Manager to update, save, and
restore the system software of the components in the HiPath network.
The following example provides an overview of how a HiPath network works.

Fundamentals
Introduction
To ensure that the communication servers and applications are correctly recognized, the network must contain a server PC (administrator PC) with a DB Feature Server database in which
all communication servers are listed. If not, the communication servers (ComScendo services)
must be entered manually in the Inventory Manager.
In addition, an Inventory Server should be installed on every PC on which applications are running so that the applications are recognized by the Inventory Manager. If this Inventory Server
is not installed on the PC, the PCs applications are not displayed in the Inventory Manager.

This chapter explains how to log on and off the Inventory Manager and describes the Inventory
Manager user interface.
2.1
The Portal
After installation, the Common Web Service stores a desktop icon for starting the portal page
on the server. The link to the portal page has the following general structure:
<protocol>://{<host name>|<IP address>}:<port number>
for example,
http://pdbh834a:8280 or https://pdbh834a:8443.
From this page you can access the following serviceability web services for the HiPath network:
Software Manager
You can use the Software Manager to update, save, and restore the system software of the
components in the HiPath network.
Inventory Manager
You can also access the portal page from the programs listed there; use the Portal icon in the
toolbar for this.
>
2.2
Whether or not additional Serviceability Web services are displayed on the portal
page depends on whether these Web services are logged on on the portal side.
The Inventory Manager runs automatically once the server has been started up. To enable this,
the Common Web Service must be installed as a service. The Inventory Manager remains active in the background. As soon as it is accessed with the browser, the Login dialog appears.
The ideal Inventory Manager display can be achieved by setting the screen resolution to
1024x768 pixels or higher.

If the connection was set up over HTTP (port 8280), you can use the link
Authentication via SSL to set up a connection over the HTTPS protocol (port
8443). In contrast to HTTP, this will transfer all data in encoded format.
If you encounter problems with the HTTPS connection, use the HTTP access instead. For security reasons, the HTTPS connection, however, should be the preferred connection to the server.
Cookies and JavaScript must be activated in your browser for correct display.
If you are using a proxy server and have to bypass it, see Section A.1, Bypassing
the Proxy Server, on page A-1.
To log on to the system, enter the user name and password that were defined for your HiPath
system. Your entries will be subsequently verified via the DB Feature Server.
1.
Enter your user name and password in the appropriate input fields. The password entered
is displayed as a string of asterisks.
>
2-2
User names and passwords are centrally administered for the entire system by
HiPath Manager E. You can use this program to modify user names and passwords.
For more information on the assignment of user names and passwords, please
refer to the HiPath Manager E documentation.

To display the HiPath ComScendo services and the HG 1500 boards in the lists, you must enter
the HiPath ComScendo services in the database of the network systems DB Feature Server.
This database is generally located on the networks server PC (administration PC). If there are
no HiPath ComScendo services entered in this database, no HiPath ComScendo services or
HG 1500 boards will be displayed in the work area.
However, you can add HiPath ComScendo services not yet entered in the database of the network systems DB Feature Server by selecting the menu item User defined ComScendo Services | Add ComScendo Service (see Section 4.4.1, Adding a User-Defined ComScendo
Service).
4.1
The HiPath ComScendo services entered in the DB Feature Servers database are displayed
in the work area when you click the HiPath ComScendo Service menu item.
The HiPath ComScendo services that are not entered in the DB Feature Servers database
must be entered in the list by selecting the menu item User defined ComScendo Services |
Add ComScendo Service (Section 4.4.1, Adding a User-Defined ComScendo Service).
These then appear in the list of user-defined HiPath ComScendo services when you click the
menu item HiPath ComScendo Service | User defined ComScendo Services in the navigation area (Section 4.4, User-Defined ComScendo Services).
