Computing is an activity of using and improving
computer technology, Computer hardware and software.

 Distributed systems
 Mobile computing
 Pervasive computing
Is an application that executes a

collection of protocols to

coordinate the actions of

multiple processes on a network,

such that all components

cooperate together to perform a

single or small set of related

tasks.
Factors influenced Distributed Computing

 remote communication

 fault tolerance

 high availability

 remote information access

 security
is a generic term describing one's ability

to use technology while moving, as

opposed to portable computers,

computers, which

are only practical for use while deployed

in a stationary configuration.
 mobile networking

 mobile information access

 support for adaptative applications

 system-level energy saving techniques

 location sensitivity
is a post-desktop model of human

computer interaction in which

information processing has been

thoroughly integrated into everyday

objects and activities

First to talk about Ubiquitous Computing (PERVASIVE COMPUTING)

 The purpose of a computer is to help you do something else.

 The best computer is a quiet, invisible servant.

 The more you can do by intuition the smarter you are.

 The computer should extend your unconscious.

 Technology should create calm.

Grand Challenges
• Large Scale Distributed processing

requiring decentralization

• Long life-time requirement

• Reliability (no-repair failure model)

• Deployment

• Configuration and Network Management

• Programming the Sensor Network

Emerging Pervasive Technologies
 In Hospitals
Wristband patient’s details, reduces the risk of misidentification
and treatment errors.
 In Health Care Centers
Sensors embedded in items of clothing, might allow constant
monitoring of heart rates, body-mass index, blood pressure and
other physiological variables.
 Environmental Monitoring
Pervasive computing will allow for continuous real-time data
collection and analysis via remote, wireless devices.
 Intelligent Transport Systems
Computers are incorporated into cars via integrated mobile
phone systems, parking sensors & complex engine management
systems.
Data interception, theft and, ubiquitous surveillance.
Data mining –spot patterns & trends.
Integrated transport systems -actuating devices intervene in driving
process.
PCS software and hardware may suffer from faults, results of deliberate
attempts to damage

It is argued that privacy, safety and security can be better

protected if appropriate procedures and protocols are
integrated into PCS (Pervasive Computing devices).
The volume of transmitted data should be kept to a minimum
Data that require transmission should be encrypted and sent
anonymously (without reference to the owner)
 INVISIBLE

 SOCIALIZATION

 DECISION-MAKING

 EMERGENT BEHAVIOR

 INFORMATION PROCESSING

 ENHANCING EXPERIENCE

 CONVERGENCE
IBM's project Planet Blue

Agricultural activities must go on with pervasive devices

so as to increase the production and decrease the
manual work.
Cell phones will ask the landline phone what its
telephone number is and will forward our calls to it
Remote computers will monitor our health statistics and
will determine when one is in trouble and will take
appropriate action for rescue.
Refrigerators will be connected to the Internet so one
could find out, via cell phone or PDA, what is in it while
one is at the store.
 Pervasive computing provides an attractive vision for the future of

computing.

Well, we no longer will be sitting down in front of a PC to get access

to information, instead we use wireless media to access

those things.

As a machine its work is to fulfill the Man’s need, but Pervasive

Computing technology fulfills His need as a friend naturally.
