En los deportes colectivos aunque las acciones se repiten una y otra vez,
todas ellas presentan matices diferentes lo que significa que los recorridos
articulares sern distintos en cantidad y calidad del movimiento. Esta
caracterstica, determinada por un entorno inestable, es la que ms diferencia a
los deportes individuales de los colectivos y, sin ninguna duda, es la que debe
justificar la utilizacin de los mtodos de estiramiento.

Menos frecuentes en los deportes colectivos son las acciones que exigen a
las articulaciones una gran amplitud de movimiento pero poca velocidad
segmentaria. Destacar el lanzamiento y el golpeo suave en balonmano y
voleibol mediante una fase de armado amplio pero una fase de impulsin lenta.
En este caso el entrenamiento no debe basarse en la preparacin para este
tipo de acciones pues siempre hay que priorizar el entrenamiento de movilidad
articular sobre la base de las acciones ms exigentes que deber soportar una

La edad
Las personas, a medida que envejecen pierden ADM aunque esta relacin
no es lineal (Sermeev, 1966; Corbin y Noble, 1980; Einkauf, Gohdes, Jensen,
Jewell, 1987; Kuhlmann, 1993). Los estudios detectan una progresiva
involucin a partir de los primeros aos de vida. Despus de una fase de gran
movilidad articular, con pocas variaciones hasta los 10-11 aos, se alcanza la

El sexo
Como regla general se acepta que las mujeres son ms flexibles que los
hombres de su edad a pesar de que no existen estudios concluyentes, al
menos para todas las articulaciones del cuerpo (Weineck, 1988; Alter, 1990).
Dependiendo de la articulacin y del movimiento las mujeres obtienen valores
menores, iguales o mayores que los hombres a pesar de que, en general, en la
mayora de articulaciones presentaran ADM superiores a los hombres (Phillips,

tienen ms capacidad para absorber los estiramientos dinmicos. Adems, el
umbral de dolor como respuesta a una torsin articular es, por regla general,

La hora del da
mxima amplitud de movimiento entre las 10:00 y las 11:00H, y las 16:00 y
17:00H. Los valores ms bajos se localizaron a primera hora de la maana y
por la noche. Platonov (2001) tambin establece amplitudes de movimiento

relativamente cortos la proporcin ptima para la velocidad de acortamiento es
del 84% para el msculo y del 6% para el tendn. Para los msculos cortos con

El reflejo tendinoso tiene su origen en las fibras aferentes Ib. Su funcin es,
a grades rasgos, opuesta al reflejo miottico. La activacin intensa de estos
receptores produce la relajacin del msculo y de sus agonistas y la simultnea
contraccin de los msculos antagonistas. sta es la razn por la que se llam
a este comportamiento reflejo miottico inverso. Estudios recientes han
detectado que el reflejo tendinoso es la expresin de un sistema especializado
en la medicin de la tensin muscular, mientras que el reflejo miotatico lo es de
un sistema ms prximo a la medicin de la longitud muscular. Por esta razn
el trmino miottico inverso no se ajusta a la naturaleza del mismo pues su
funcin no es exactamente oponerse a la accin del reflejo miottico.
Cuando la intensidad del estiramiento es muy elevada, excediendo un
determinado punto crtico, se produce un reflejo que inhibe las motoneuronas
excitatorias y, como consecuencia, el msculo se relaja disminuyendo la
tensin (Verril, Pate, 1982; Berne, Levy, 1988). Esto es posible cuando los
impulsos son suficientemente potentes para frenar los impulsos excitadores
que provienen de los husos musculares. Pensemos que los receptores
tendinosos tienen un umbral de excitacin ms alto que los husos y, por regla
general, las tensiones regulares o moderadas no los estimularan.

De particular inters puede ser el hecho que para una misma cantidad de
estiramiento del tejido, un mtodo de estiramiento que someta a tensiones
elevadas producir ms debilitamiento transitorio estructural que un mtodo
menos agresivo (Warren y col., 1971-1976) Esta apreciacin es de vital
importancia para evitar tcnicas de estiramiento antes del entrenamiento que
sometan a los tejidos a grandes tensiones como sucede con todos los
estiramientos pasivos forzados y los mtodos PNF. Este tipo de estiramiento
deberan realizarse preferiblemente en sesiones aisladas.

permite focalizar mejor la atencin sobre la zona que nos interesa trabajar. Es
preferible desplazar las manos constantemente para evitar que los receptores
cutneos se adapten a la palpacin. Estos movimientos deben realizarse en el
sentido de las fibras musculares del msculo sometido a palpacin. Si el
estiramiento se realiza en tensin activa es recomendable deslizar los dedos
desde la insercin proximal a la ms distal.

1987). En realidad los msculos estn elctricamente en silencio durante un
estiramiento pasivo pero, sorprendentemente, las tcnicas FNP aumentan la
actividad elctrica del msculo durante el estiramiento y, a pesar de ello, la
ADM aumenta (Magnusson y col., 1996; Moore, Hutton, 1980; Halbertsma,
Goeken, 1994). Esto sugera que la FNP estaba asociada a un potente efecto
analgsico.
Estiramiento y rendimiento
Muchos estudios han demostrado que la mxima ADM aumenta despus del
entrenamiento con estiramientos aunque los resultados aportados por
diferentes autores son controvertidos. Toft y col. (1989) encontraron una
reduccin del 36% en la tensin pasiva de los flexores plantares despus de un
programa de 3 semanas de estiramiento pasivo. Algunos autores matizan que
las tcnicas que incluyen contraccin del agonista o antagonista son las ms
efectivas (Cornelius y col. 1992; Etnyre, Abraham, 1986; Holt y col.,1970;
Moore, Hutton, 1980; Ostering y col., 1990; Sady ycol., 1982). Otros autores no
encuentran diferencias entre las diferentes tcnicas de estiramiento (de Vries,
1962; Lucas, Koslow, 1984) y Starring (1988) defiende ciclos pasivos de
estiramiento en vez de un estiramiento mantenido.

Otra cosa es entender que no todos los grupos musculares deben tener el
mismo tratamiento. Durante la carrera los cudriceps reducen la stiffness a la
vez que los isquiotibiales la incrementan. Esto supone que la musculatura de la
corva puede tener un tratamiento diferenciado para frenar en lo posible esta
tendencia. En este caso y en otros de similares puede justificarse la utilizacin
de eestiramientos pasivos antes del entrenamiento. Sin embargo, los ejercicios
de estiramiento realizados no deben alterar excesivamente la respuesta
neuromuscular del sistema. Como sabemos existen complejas relaciones entre
los grupos musculares lo que significa que la modificacin de las propiedades
mecnicas o alteraciones neuronales de una parte del sistema afecta
irremediablemente a su totalidad (ver cadenas musculares)

siendo ms compliantes necesitan ADM ms pequeas y velocidades altas
para optimizar la respuesta del elemento contrctil.
Podemos decir pues que el tiempo es una variable importante que conduce
a alteraciones transitorias. En el press banca con porcentajes de carga
elevados respecto a la 1RM y los DJ a 80 y 100cm. el movimiento es lento y
por eso un sistema ms compliante permite la reutilizacin eficiente de la
energa elstica con una moderada actividad del reflejo miottico. Cuando el
movimiento excntrico es breve o el tiempo de contacto es pequeo (250ms)
un complejo musculotendinoso ms stiffness dar mayores rendimientos
(Young y col., 1999) ya que permite transmitir con mayor rapidez la tensin a
las palancas. En los deportes colectivos una musculatura excesivamente
stiffness no ser beneficiosa para optimizar el rendimiento a la vez que
aumenta el riesgo de lesin.

A su vez, como los msculos estn unidos entre si por numerosas capas
aponeurticas, los estiramientos en tensin activa y pasiva pueden llegar a
afectar a una cadena muscular grande. Despus del estiramiento realizado en
tensin activa o pasiva podemos realizar una tarea tcnica con baln o sin
baln prxima a la cadena cintica trabajada con el objetivo de que la
regulacin de la tensin activa se realice en condiciones de alta especificidad.
La regulacin de la tensin adquirida en situaciones muy controladas no es
efectiva por si sola sino que constituye el primer paso para un posterior control
de las necesidades de rigidez activa en cada momento del juego con la
consecuente anticipacin ante situaciones cambiantes. De todos es conocida la
sensacin de inseguridad cuando ante una entrada a canasta recibimos un
empujn. En ese momento es extremadamente difcil finalizar la accin y
preparar la cada. Los jugadores menos experimentados son incapaces de
lanzar, o lo hacen muy mal, pues su preocupacin se convierte en regular la
cada. En cambio, los jugadores experimentaos anticipan (no es una sensacin

En todos los casos, los tiempos de estiramiento deben ser breves, del orden
de 1-6 segundos y slo se realizarn de 1 a 3 repeticiones por grupo muscular.
A mayor exigencia de aceleracin de la articulacin menor nmero de
repeticiones. Respetar este principio permitir no agotar el potencial de los
husos neuromusculares y alcanzar un estado de alerta, de precontraccin tal y
como debe suceder durante la prctica deportiva. En este tipo de estiramientos
no se persigue una adaptacin de los tejidos al estiramiento (el tiempo es
demasiado breve) sino una respuesta sensomotora afinada con una regulacin
de la tensin muscular.

Este tipo de movimiento debe realizarse con cargas que permitan una
ptima reutilizacin de la energa elstica acumulada. Cuando el peso sea
excesivo y el tiempo de las fases parciales de frenado demasiado grandes,

Este mtodo permite fortalecer los msculos sin perjudicar las propiedades
de los tejidos. Es ms, la electroestimulacin esttica en estiramiento beneficia
la respuesta de los tendones a la traccin (Basas, 1997, 2001). Sin duda
permite un fortalecimiento tendinoso pues en cada contraccin muscular el
tendn se pone en tensin controlada que aumenta conforme aumenta la
intensidad de la corriente. Los tendones respondern a este progresivo y
controlado aumento de la tensin con un aumento de colgeno lo que
aumentar la stiffness (Watkins, 1999). Por esta razn se convierte en un
mtodo adecuado para el acondicionamiento de tendones despus de lesin o
para mejorar la respuesta de los tendones durante las fases del entrenamiento
de hipertrofia y coordinacin intramuscular.

y col., 2002, encontraron, despus de tres semanas de estiramiento pasivo
forzado del trceps sural con previa aplicacin de calor local, un aumento mayor
de la ADM que con un programa simple de estiramientos. El tiempo de
estiramiento forzado fue de 10 minutos y la traccin con una sencilla polea. A
su vez, la aplicacin de hielo despus de estiramiento forzado con previa
aplicacin de calor local, aument ms la ADM que simplemente el
estiramiento forzado. La aplicacin de hielo increment la ADM reduciendo el
dolor y espasmo en casos agudos. Algunas discrepancias en los diferentes
estudios realizados hasta el momento se centran ms en las diferentes
variables (duracin de la aplicacin de calor, intensidad y frecuencia del
estiramiento) que en la aceptacin de que la combinacin de calor y
estiramiento permite un aumento mayor de la ADM que simplemente el
estiramiento. Lentell y col. (1992) entre otros autores, defienden que despus
de la aplicacin de calor es preferible utilizar cargas pequeas durante un
tiempo prolongado (normalmente 10 minutos) que cargas elevadas en poco
tiempo. Estas ltimas producen ms dao celular cuando lo comparamos con
estiramientos realizados a mayores temperaturas con cargas pequeas
(Warren y col. 1971; Webright y col. 1997; David y col. 2002).

Algunos estudios realizados con animales aplicando calor local con baos de
agua caliente, tambin detectaron diferencias entre la aplicacin de calor con
estiramiento y slo estiramiento a favor del primero (Lehmann y col. 1970;
Warren y col. 1976; Warren y col. 1971).

Bompa (2000) establece como norma bsica del entrenamiento que primero
hay que desarrollar el tronco y progresivamente las extremidades. El
razonamiento es lgico si pensamos que en la columna probablemente lo nico
que no desencadena dolores es el hueso al que aludimos constantemente. Los
ligamentos y las cpsulas articulares estn constituidos por porcentajes
diversos pero altos de colgeno, atravesado por nervios capaces de
desencadenar fuertes dolores y de transmitirlos a zonas alejadas del origen de
la agresin. El colgeno es un tejido con memoria que lucha constantemente
para regresar a su longitud de reposo y que es capaz de reparacin
espontnea. Es un tejido que tiende a volverse rgido con los aos o despus
de un traumatismo, lo que se conoce como tejido endurecido.
