Overview
2.1
Feature Introduction
Gb Interface over Satellite means that data at GB interface is transmitted via satellite
communication. When there is no transmission condition between BSC and SGSN (e.g.
hard to transmit through microwave and optical fiber, such in an island), satellite can be
used to transmit data at GB interface between BSC and SGSN. This is an extra
transmission way.
2.2
Technical Description
Compared with E1 and IP transmission, Gb interface over satellite has longer time delay.
When connects satellite, turn on the background switch to support Gb interface over
satellite transmission. BSC UL delay and extension UL timer increase 520ms delay.
When satellite transmission changes to E1 or IP transmission, turn off the background
switch to shut down Gb interface over satellite transmission, set BSC UL delay and
extension UL timer as the same with background time.

Parameter Configuration
Operation steps:
In the configuration resource tree window, double-click BSC Function under OMC
GERAN Subnetwork Identifier BSC Management NE Subscriber ID Config Set
Identifier. Set Current Gb uses satellite as Yes in GPRS Property2 tab, as shown in the
following figure.

Engineering Guide
6.1
Application Scenario
This feature is adopted in the situation when E1, IP or microwave transmission can not
solve the link problem between SGSN and remote BSC, such as in an island. In this case,
Gb interface over satellite is used to connect SGSN and BSS.
6.2
Configuration Description
This feature does not involve adjustment of iBSC or BTS hardware configuration.
6.3
Network Impacts
Gb interface over satellite transmission has longer time delay than E1 or IP transmission
(longer link delay, message transmitted from one satellite earth station and received in
another earth station). Detailed transmission delay, the time of electromagnetic wave
passing the satellite by the speed of light, is not fixed. Satellite position, geography
position of earth station and altitude height should be considered. Satellite
communication transmission often adopts synchronization satellite. GEO transmission
time delay is about 250 - 280ms.
