Evaluation Question:

Q5. How did you attract/address your

audience?
To find out how to address / attract my audience I needed to know a little bit more
about them. I was heavily reliant on my primary research along with own views
and preferences, whilst also considering those reflected by the popularity of
similar pop genre music magazines. This links to Blumert and Katz theory use and
gratifications due to the fact that my intended audience needs to be informed,
entertained, affiliation which this theory explores. Therefore, when designing my
music magazine, I sought to ensure the ideas, likes and dislikes expressed by my
target audience were incorporated and reflected in my design, otherwise, it would
fail to appeal and they would not buy my product. I accomplished this through the
layout of my front cover, contents page and double page spread, where I tailored
the design to reflect not only their preferences but also, as already stated those of
popular pop music magazines to attract my reader. My audience indicated that
they wanted offers, freebies, reviews, interviews and features that included
established artists but also up and coming artists. They also wanted the latest
gossip from inside the pop music industry. Maslow's hierarchy needs, these are
presented visually within the magazine.

Additionally, I have sought to address my audience's requirements through use

of both formal and informal language, so as to ensure that my intended
audience understand all the information whilst also demonstrating that the
publisher understands the intended audience's needs.

I have sought to attract my audience through the visual appearance of my magazine,

ensuring that it has a sophisticated and yet fun appearance that is representative of pop
music. This has been achieved via a consistent colour coding throughout my music
magazine, ensuring that it reflects the generic conventions which you would associate with
pop music, whilst also reflecting current trends and seasonality. The typography / typeface
that I have chosen to use throughout the magazine, particularly as this signifies consistency,
something the reader will then associate with the brand values of my magazine. I have
attempted to intrigue my reader and also create a sense of individuality to such an extent
that my magazine has the ability to stand out amongst existing popular magazines.

During the design phase, research was undertaken

which focussed on two pre-existing popular
magazines, analysing the generic conventions which
were typically found for the front cover, contents
page and double page spread. This informed the
design of my magazines, whereby I incorporated the
effective and key elements in my magazine after
bringing them up to date. I have subverted certain
typical conventions in order to increase the attraction
of my design for my audience, for example the
double page spread features a question and answer
style interview. Stuart Hall created the reception
theory which explores the decoding and encoding of
meaning which is implied by a certain object to the
audience through the media.

The main image found on the front cover is that of my artist, a young female who
looks a similar age to those at which the magazine is aimed and who are more
likely to read it. By doing this it ensures the target audience should be able to
relate to the image and trust that the magazine content will be suitable for them.
This can also act as an inspiration for the readers as they can see that someone of
a similar age who has achieved success and this can encourage them to aspire to
succeed. The range of cinematography angles used to present my artist 'Rayna'
throughout my magazine should appeal to the audience. The aim was to ensure
that the reader was engaged due to the direct gaze towards the reader helping to
draw us in. The mise-en-scene within the images show depth of field and provides
contrast within my magazine, signifies brand values to my audience whilst also
ensuring it is visually attractive and breaking up the text on the page. The location,
props, positioning of my artist is very representative of the genre pop music and
