CALL FOR APPLICATIONS CLA COMMUNICATIONS, MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS COORDINATOR

The Canadian Lacrosse Association is seeking a candidate to fill the full time position of Communications,
Marketing and Promotions Coordinator at the head office in Ottawa, ON.
Start date: ideally between February 15-22, 2016 or as soon as possible

TITLE:
Communications, Marketing and Promotions Coordinator
REPORTING STRUCTURE:
The Communications, Marketing and Promotions Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.
PURPOSE:
The general orientation of the position is towards the promotion of the sport to the public and to the lacrosse
community.
This is accomplished by communicating and collaborating with CLA partners to effectively administer and perform
the day-to-day CLA mass communications including, but not limited to public and social media management,
website management, promotions, and resource development and design for CLA publications such as Sticks
and Stones.
The Communications, Marketing and Promotions Coordinator will liaise with the following partners on an ongoing
basis:
a) Member Associations
b) Sector and Committee Chairs of the CLA
c) Board of Directors, in particular the Director of Marketing and Communications and Director of National
Championships
d) National Championship Host Committees
e) Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES TO THE CANADIAN LACROSSE ASSOCIATION:

Increase level of communications support and media attention for all CLA events, activities and
programs;
Ability to reach key national media on a regular basis with athlete/national body stories;
Raise profile of high-performance lacrosse athletes competing for Canada;
Raise CLA profile nationally within the general public, corporate sector, all levels of government and
key sport and news media;

Introduce and raise profile of new and existing sponsors and sport partners;
Have main point-of-contact to handle all media and public relations matters in a professional manner;
Significantly elevate national profile of sport;
Ability to generate excitement and awareness around each national and international event including
Canadian-based events;
Develop and maintain up-to-date media kits or media guides and distribute to national media;
Raise national awareness of CLAs programs through promotional campaigns.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Communications
Develop a media and public relations plan and strategy including but not limited to national and
international events and programs;
Maintaining and updating a comprehensive national media list (news, sport, business, youth);
Assist and communicate with CLA partners, including MAs, sector and committee chairs, as
required;
Manage the content and updating of the CLAs Twitter, Facebook and any and all additional social
networking programs and capture user statistics;
Create and recommend additional and effective ways to communicate with members and
associations to further the objectives of the CLA;
Manage the content and updating of www.lacrosse.ca and additional related sites, such as but not
limited to national championship sites and capture user statistics;
Assist in the creation of, distribution and posting of national press releases on national programs,
including but not limited to national teams and national events;
Co-ordinate media interviews for chief spokesperson for national body;
Source editorial opportunities for story pitching and/or bylined articles;
Coordinate press conferences for important messaging opportunities e.g. naming of national teams,
major sponsor announcements or other messages as required;
Attend national team camps or competitions as approved in the annual plan to provide media
relations support;
Develop media kit and bio information for national teams including printed media guide and its
distribution by mail where applicable;
Ensure national media have up-to-date photos of athletes;
Write articles, finalize content and complete the design of the CLAs quarterly newsletter, Sticks &
Stones;
Assist in the development and writing of letters of appreciation, letters of support, and other letters as
requested by the Executive Director and/or Board of Directors;
Organize and manage a photo library of lacrosse images including preparing easy access folders for
specific images by topic;
Hire and direct professional photographers for approved events to capture photos for CLA use and
rights in the photo library;
Manage all media enquiries via e-mail and phone calls, and the follow up media releases

Coordinate requests from media for athlete interviews and special events (i.e. media conferences,
television commercials, photo shoots, athlete appearances and corporate opportunities,
documentaries etc.);
Manage athlete ongoing media training for junior and senior teams;
Prepare year-end follow-up report of media coverage generated, media hits and exposure, and list of
compilation of media attending local events.
Manage the ongoing tracking of Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame lifetime game passes and issue to
new inductees each year;

2. National Championship Promotions Management


Maintain ongoing communication with national championship hosts and provide guidance in the
hosting requirements around the event promotion, signage;
Train hosts and help maintain and upgrade the individual championship web pages as owned by the
CLA;
Create and provide to the national championship convenors, the print-ready content for the program
guide including the Presidents message and any sponsor or CLA advertising as applicable;
3. Marketing and Promotion
Assist the Executive Director in the servicing requirements of CLA and national team sponsors
where required;
Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications on sponsor and promotional
programs;
Assist in the development of promotional materials;
Assist in the development and layout of sponsor soliciting presentations;
Create and manage a merchandise line for general sales and fundraising;
Create and manage a merchandise gifting and swag program;
Manage the volunteer recognition program on an annual basis
Responsible for Lester B. Pearson Award Nomination Process
Develop content and activities that can be promoted through online and social media avenues to
engage the participant base in the promotion of the sport.
4. Administration
Word processing needs of the office (e.g. Preparing manuals for translation; desk topping);
Attend staff meetings to review monthly objectives and reports;
Attend the meetings of the association when requested;
Submit a report on various project and program areas at the semi-annual and annual meetings;
Attend scheduled meetings with identified partner groups;
Complete other duties as needed or assigned by the Executive Director, Operational Committee
Chairs or Board of Directors.

MINIMUM SKILL SET AND EDUCATION:

Post secondary education in sport management, communications, marketing or related field;


Ideally 3-5 years experience working in a related capacity in sport;
Knowledge and experience with social media and communication tools;
Strong writing skills for media press releases and internal releases;
Experience managing and maintaining websites and databases;
Ability to multi task in a fast paced environment;
Bilingualism is considered an asset;
Technical knowledge and experience in lacrosse is an asset;
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
Advanced computer application skills - Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint;
Ability to learn new systems and tools quickly;
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and work as part of a team;
Ability to handle sensitive information in a professional and confidential manner;
Able to think critically and be a problem solver;
Strong ability to communicate with and to manage volunteer committees;
Experience working with volunteers in a non-profit organization is considered an asset.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:


Able to work weekends and some overtime as required.
Occasional travel within North America to attend meetings or events.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary to commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package will be
offered as a part of the compensation package.
