What is zakat?
Established in the second year of the Hegira, the zakat (the
purifying social taxes) represents the third pillar of Islam. The purpose of paying zakat is purification: zakat is purifying because it purifies the soul from greediness and establishes a sense of sharing. It doesn't diminish what we have since it's bringing us blessings. Zakat is often linked to prayer in about 82 verses in the Qur'an. This twinning is of great importance, stresses Sheik alSa'dy (deceased in 1376 of the Hegira /1956 AD.): In the Quran, God often links prayer to zakat. The reason behind this is that prayer symbolizes the sincerity and adoration towards the Adored and his/her contribution to helping others, whereas zakat and alms are symbol for the generosity toward His creatures. Op deze manier wordt de uiting van geluk van een dienaar(es) gellustreerd door zijn medewerking om zich nuttig te stellen voor de gewone mensen...". (Taysr al-Karm al-Rahmn f tafsr kalm al-Mannn p.24) Zakat was established by the Holy Qur'an and the Sunna (the prophetic traditions): In the Qur'an we read: "Levy alms on thei belongings in order to purify and bless them. (Sura Repentance, nr. 9, verse 103) The Prophet (pbuh) presents zakat as one of the pillars of Islam: "Islam is based on five pillars: testifying that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, fulfill Salaah (prayer), paying Zakat (compulsory charity),fasting Ramadan and making the Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, . Transmitted by al-Bukhary and Muslim (according to the companion Abdullah Ibn'Umar).
