1 Introduction
1.1 Objective of Industrial Attachment
Industrial Attachment is a compulsory programme of School of Civil and
Environmental Engineering. It is a good opportunity for student to experience the
real work life and prepare the student with practical skills and insight for future
career.
Working as a newly employed engineer, the student can develop and enhance
academic as well as personal skill such as communication, confidence and
maturity. The attachment challenges the student with many real job asignments
to tune the student into right working attitude and professionalism.
1.2 Purpose of the report
This report is the summary of 20 weeks internship attachment of student at Arup
Singapore Pte Ltd. It provides the training experience and professional
knowledge the student had acquired during attachment period.
1.3 Scope of the report
Working in the construction industry, student has the opportunity to familiarize
himself with few projects and the usage of software like GSA, Adsec to assist the
analysis.

1.4 Structure of the report

This industrial attachment report includes 4 chapters:
Chapter 1 contains the introduction and purposes of report.
Chapter 2 and 3 will discuss the activities the student had participated in.
Chapter 4 is the conclusion and the experience gained from the programme.

2 PROJECTS
2.1 National skin centre (NSC)
2.1.1

Project background

2.1.2

Checking drawing details

A) Procedure
As there will be renovation in the current NSC, the student had to check whether
the reinforcement details of all beams, columns, slabs are not missing and
cleared all the discrepancies between general plan and column schedule, and in
beam sizes. Next, student created a mark-up of those missing reinforcement
details and discrepancies in general plan by using Bluebleam software.

After creating mark up, student rearranged all drawings into new categories
which are A&A( Addition & Alteration), Main Building which includes beam,
column, slab reinforcement, staircase details, storeys plan, etc. and PUB
substation.

B) Experience
As the task required a lot of checking, it helped student to develop patience and
meticulousness.
Moreover, student got familiar with details of reinforcement for beams, columns,
staircase, etc.

2.1.3

Calculation of wind load

As wind plays an important role in affecting the stability of the building, the
analysis of its effect is carried out.
A) Procedure
Student followed BS EN 1991-1-4 to calculate wind stress. The
methodology is
-

First student found the basic wind velocity with the expression

Where Vb,0 s value is

cdir and cseasons value is 1
Next, student found the peak velocity pressure with the expression

qb is the basic wind velocity calculated above.

For flat terrain and turbulence factor ki =1 Ce(z) can be calculated from
figure 4.2 in BS EN 1991-1-4

For NSC, student used type II to calculate Ce(z)

Student created the peak velocity pressure profile on all faces of the
building based on Figure 7.4:

To determine external pressure coefficient:

+ First student found the area of loaded section (A). Compare A if A<1 m2
or 1<A<10 or A>10 m2.
+

Student used table 7.1 and figure 7.5 in to find external pressure

coefficient for vertical walls of rectangular plan buildings and table 7.2 and
figure 7.6 for flat roof with parapets
+ For NSC, student took into account wind from 4 directions: north, south,
west and east that affect NSC and combine the effect together.

To determine internal pressure coefficient:

Student followed this part

The worst scenario of combination of internal and external pressure

coefficient would be applied on the building

The worst pressure applied will be calculated with the following
expression
Wind pressure = peak velocity x (worst combination of internal and
external pressure coefficient)

B) Experience
As student never learned about wind loading in university before, this task
gave him a challenge and opportunity to knowledge about wind which can
benefit him in future.

2.1.4

Loading plan.

Loading plan is needed to help engineer

For NSC, student created loading plan for live load using revit.

A) Procedure
- At first different areas on the architect drawings of NSC on different
-

storeys are grouped into various categories using loading category

Design load value is given to each category.
Student calculated M&E load
Finally student created loading plan using Revit.

A.1) How loading plan is created in Revit

-

There are two main values of live load to be used in loading plan for NSC

which are 3 kPa and 7.5 kPa

Mostly for NSC, the design value is 3kPa as shown in the figure below.
When the NSC revit model was sent to student, he first created the area
boundary for rooms that have the same design value.

Student then assigned Area to those rooms as a unit so that he can

colour this unit later.

Next student created colour fill legend for him to colour the Area
mention aboved.
+ In colour fill legend, student gave the name and colour for each legend.
For example, student gave one legend with name 3kPa and colour grey.
And assign this legend to the area with design value of 3kPa.

Student finished each storey in the building with the same process
mentioned above

2.1.5

Calculating load on column using excel sheet

and software which are Rhinoceros and GSA

A) Procedure
-

Rhinoceros is a 3-D free-form modeler student used to

create wire frame of NSC and import into GSA

GSA is the program that allow student to input data like

loads, beam and column size into the model and yield the
analysis results.

In GSA, student put beam and column size into the NSC model

Next, to create truss, student made the truss wire frame model in
Rhinoceros and export it into GSA

Next student created walls in the building

Next, student created slab in the building which is the light blue panel in
the below figure.

Next, student calculated the self-weight of the staircase and self-weight of

precast concrete.
After that live load, SDL, self-weight, loads from facade are imposed into
the model. Students have to make sure that all parts of the model are well

connected to each other.

The model was finished as shown below

Finally, the results were made from running analysis

B) Experience
In creating the model, student learned to be careful with every step and
familiarized himself with using two software in order to finish task fast.
Upon completion of the model, student also gained the sense of
achievement

2.2.1

Using adsec to assist checking column capacity

A) Procedure
- First student created the column with required reinforcement.
- M/N diagram was extracted.

From M/N diagram, MM curve was extracted as well.

B) Experience

What student learned from using adsec is the theory behind how adsec
calculates the capacity of beam and apply it on excel sheet, which will be
elaborated on section below
2.2.2

Beam design in excel sheet

A) Procedure
- First student make the assumption about relationship between stress and
strain in concrete and steel

The other curve is for concrete
-

Student understood the compression stress block in concrete.

+ The neutral axis will run from negative infinitive to positive infinitive
which will create different scenario of compression stress block in beam
+ The slope is the maximum between the slope that governs the yield
strain in concrete and the one governing the yield strain in steel.

+ The compression stress block used are showed in the picture below.
The compression stress block are divided into three parts so that the
calculation of axial force and moment is easily carried out.
+ Student calculated the stress, the force, and moment of the concrete
compression block.
Equation used are
The yield strain in concrete is set .

2.3 Downtown Line 3 post-construction survey

The purpose of
A) Procedure
- Places that student went to take survey are HDB, factories, substations.
- Before the survey student prepared the observation template for the
survey in Marq app, print the pre-construction survey, charge the ipad,
make sure that all the equipment including water bottle, torchlight, crack
-

meter, power bank are all there.

On the survey-taking day, student arrived to the target area and took
photos of rooms, toilets, walkways, cracks, staircases, settlement, paint

peeling, concrete spalling, etc.

After finishing taking photos, student prepared the post-construction

report.

3 Final conclusion
During 5 months internship at Oiltanking Singapore, I have learnt immense
technical knowledge of oil and gas industry, which is very important to my future
career. Working in Oiltanking Singapore also gives me a chance to develop
communication skill and working experience, which is very hard to achieve
somewhere else.
The internship is a good time to look at and find out what is my strength and
weakness. This helps me to know which character I should improve in the next
future.
At last, the internship has gave me an insight and motivation to pursue my career
in power industry.
