Basic Paver Installation
for patios, walkways and driveways

Installation of pavers requires skill and attention to detail. The beauty of our products are often judged by the quality of installation
and therefore are best installed by trained, experienced professionals. If you are planning on a DIY project, we recommend that you
visit a Romanstone Hardscape Dealer who can give you additional instructions and assistance with any questions you may have.
Whether you are installing yourself or using a contractor, here are some basic procedures that will ensure a solid and attractive
installation. For more information please visit a Romanstone Hardscapes Dealer or a Midwest Block & Brick showroom.
Instructions
Step 1: Planning
Determine square footage of the area you intend
to pave (length x width= square footage) and add
5% for breakage and cutting. Measure lineal feet
of open edges, those not up against a permanent
structure such as a house, etc. This will indicate
lineal footage of edge restraints required. A
Romanstone Hardscapes Dealer will help
calculate the amount of materials and estimate the
cost of your project.
Step 2: Preparation
Mark out the location of the patio, walkway, or
driveway. Using the 3-4-5 triangle method to
determine a perpendicular line, measure parallel
lines from the perpendicular line to establish a
boundary. Place stakes every 4 to 6 feet and at the
corners. These stakes should be 8 outside of the
planned edge of the pavers. Call local utilities and
cable to mark locations.
Step 3: Excavation
Excavate the minimum required depth depending
on your application. Using a flat shovel, cut
evenly to remove sod/dirt to a depth of at least
7.125 to allow room for 2.375paver, 0.75
compacted sand, minimum of 2 compacted
crushed stone base (more if soil is very soft).
Excavation should be 6 wider on sides where
edge restraints are to be used.
Step 4: Base
This is very important. The more time and effort
you put into the preparation of the base, the better
the project and the longer it will last. Use either
or graded base material that includes
sizes down to fine dust. This material is easier to
compact and will give a tight close knit surface.
Slope and Grade are important to ensure proper
run-off. It is best to plan at least a per foot drop,
but try not to exceed per foot.
Step 5: Screeding
Work from side to side; moving your screed
guides, screed 10 sections of sand. You will use
your 6 ft. to 8 ft. long 2x 6 screeding board to
loosely spread the sand and to strike off any
excess. DO NOT walk on or work from your
screeded sand. Do not worry about voids that
screed guides have left after you have removed
them. You will lightly fill them with sand and trowel
them smooth as you are laying the pavers.
Step 6: Laying the Pavers

Starting from the longest straight permanent side,
place the pavers directly on the screeded bed of
sand. Set the pavers hand tight, but DO NOT use
a hammer to adjust the pavers or set them. Do not
lay pavers over the 6 extended base area where
edge restraint is to be set later.
Step 7: Cutting
If any pavers need to be cut, mark the cuts with
a crayon or chalk and cut with a masonry saw
or splitter. On sides where edge restraints are to
be installed later you can place the edging after
laying the pavers to reduce the amount of cutting.
Allow for up to gap between the cut paver and
the edge or permanent structure. You will fill this
with sand later. You should use a diamond blade
mason saw, or a paver splitter.
Step 8: Edging
Edge restraints are a critical element to the
durability of a paver installation. Using a trowel,
cut straight down the side of the pavers down to
the base and pull back the sand. Be careful not
to scrape up the base material. Then placing the
edging flat onto the base, push the frost heave lip
under the sand (between the bedding sand and
the gravel base), using a hammer to tap against
the back of the edging until the it is tight to the
pavers. Spike the edging every 2 ft, pounding the
spikes in until the head is touching the edging.
Step 9: Compacting
After completing installation, pavers must be
swept clean and compacted. Using a plate
compactor make at least two passes over
the pavers. Starting around the perimeter
and working inward, overlap each pass 2 to 4
inches. Make the second pass perpendicular to
your first. The compacting process will level all
the pavers, compact the sand bedding course,
and force sand up into the joint
Tools & Supplies

Base: Material should be or
gravel including particle sizes down to
fine dust. 1 depth of compacted base
weighs approximately 1200 lbs. per 100
sq.ft. Always add 5-10% for edges and
miscellaneous areas.
Sand: Coarse concrete sand or other
suitable bedding material. 1 depth,
approximately 900 lbs. per 100 sq. ft.
Pavers: Do not forget to factor any
soldier course (bordering) pavers in your
calculations. You will need to know how
many linear feet of project perimeter.
Edge Restraints: Pave Edge or Snap Edge
along with steel spikes.

Step 10: Finishing

Spread a thin uniform layer of jointing sand over
the surface. Use a stiff bristle street broom and
sweep back and forth over the entire pavement
until sand has stopped falling into joints. Alternate
between tamping and sweeping to continue to
work the material into the joint. If when you make
a pass with the plate compactor no more joints
open up, you are then finished.

TOPSOIL
Step 1: Planning & Layout

Map out where you want the wall to be installed
or have a surveyor stake out the walls placement.
Figure out the length and height of your wall.
A Romanstone Hardscapes Dealer will help
calculate the amount of materials and estimate the
cost of your project. Call local utilities and cable to
mark locations.
Step 2: Excavation
Excavate for the leveling pad to the lines and grades
shown on the approved plans. The trench for the
leveling pad should be at least 2 feet wide and deep
enough to bury the first course below grade, plus 6
inches for the leveling pad. Ensure that a minimum
of 8 inches or 10 percent of the total wall height
(whichever is greater) is below grade.
Step 3: Leveling Pad
An aggregate leveling pad is made of
compactible base material of inch minus with
fines. If the planned grade along the wall front
will change elevation, the leveling pad may be
stepped up by the height of the block (typically
8-inch increments) to match the grade change.
Always start at the lowest level and work
upward. Compact the aggregate, making sure its
level front to back and side to side.
Step 4: Base Course
This is the most important step in the installation
process. Begin laying block at the lowest elevation
of the wall. Chisel off any lip on the rear of the block
so that the block will lie flat on the leveling pad.
Place first block and level, front to back and side to
side; lay subsequent blocks in same manner. Place
the blocks side by side, flush against each other,
and make sure the blocks are in full contact with
the leveling pad. Level front to back and side to side.
Place soil in front of the base course and compact.
Base course should be buried. Continue to fill and
compact after each course is laid. If the wall is on
an incline, dont slope the blocks. Step them up so
they remain consistently level.

Installation of retaining walls requires skill and attention to detail. The beauty of our products are often judged by the quality
of installation and therefore are best installed by trained, experienced professionals. If you are planning on a DIY project, we
recommend that you visit a Romanstone Hardscape Dealer who can give you additional instructions and assistance with any
questions you may have. Always consult a professional to design walls over 4 feet high. Whether you are installing yourself or
using a contractor, here are some basic guidelines for construction to help ensure the success of your Romanstone Hardscapes
retaining wall. These instructions are meant as general guidelines. Site-specific conditions may warrant additional installation
requirements. For more information please visit a Romanstone Hardscapes Dealer or a Midwest Block & Brick showroom.
Step 5: The Next Course

Fill cores and voids between blocks with inch
clean drainage aggregate prior to laying the next
course of block. Clean any debris off the top of
the blocks. Place the second course of blocks on
top of the base course. Pull each block forward

as far as possible to ensure the correct setback.
Maintain running bond. Cut partial units to stay
on bond. A circular saw with a masonry blade is
recommended for cutting partial units. Backfill
with drainage aggregate directly behind the block,
adding 6 to 8 inches at a time. Add soil fill behind
the aggregate. Compact before the next course.
Step 6: Drainage Design
Each project is unique. The grades on the site will
determine at what level to install the drainpipe.
Place the drainpipe (4-inch perforated piping) so
water drains down and away from the wall into
a storm drain, or daylight just above grade. Fill in
the area behind the blocks with clean drainage
aggregate, at least 1 foot from the wall.
Step 7: Compaction
Shovel the backfill soil behind the drainage
aggregate and compact the backfill with a handoperated compactor. Make sure the aggregate
is level with or slightly below the top of the base
course. Continue to fill and compact after each
course is laid.
Step 8: Capping
Start capping from the lowest elevation. If the
wall elevation changes, stack caps where the
wall steps up. Lay caps at the elevation change
and work back toward the previous step up.
Cut caps with a diamond-blade saw to fit, as
needed. Carefully glue with a high-strength
concrete adhesive.
Step 9: Finish Grade & Surface
Protect the wall with a finished grade at the top
and bottom. To ensure proper water drainage
away from the wall, use 6 inches of soil with
low permeability and seed or plant to stabilize
the surface. Consult the wall design engineer if
water may be directed behind the wall. If needed,
create a swale to divert water away from the wall.
This will minimize water seeping into the soil and
drainage aggregate behind the wall.
Step 10: Site Cleaning & Restoration
Brush off the wall and pick up any debris left from
the construction process. Planting vegetation in
front and on top of the wall will help reduce the
chance of erosion.

The Sleeve-It System is an innovative solution that resolves fence integration issues with a segmental retaining wall. The system
is purchased and installed by the wall contractor to facilitate fence post integration while preventing damage to vital retaining wall
components such as geogrid, drainage stone, and wall blocks. Since the system is able to be installed directly behind the wall face,
it allows the wall contractor to backfill and compact without obstruction. The corrugated HDPE cylinder and lid is designed to handle
the weight of backfill soils, vibratory compactors, and moisture related conditions during long periods of inactivity between the end
of wall constructions and the actual fence install. Pre-engineered for building code compliance, the Sleeve-It System is sure to be a
