Music to his ears

Seneca battles Winslow

Seneca band director Keith Styers

caught off guard, humbled
by winning teacher of the year
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Teaching is a line of work that
separates itself from others by
having a direct effect on the youth
of our country on a daily basis.
Good teachers supply their students with the tools to learn an
entire curriculum in fewer than
nine months. Great teachers are
able to create a relationship with
their students in a way that molds
them into minds destined for success after they are released from
their classroom.
Over his 12-year career with
Seneca High School, Keith Styers
has established himself as a great
teacher and was recently recognized for this by receiving the
teacher of the year award for
2015.
Styers, the marching band director at the high school, considers himself lucky to teach a class
that is not considered a core
course of the curriculum, so the
students who enroll are not doing
it because they are being forced
to.
Im fortunate to teach students that want to be in my class,
Styers said. It's not like English

or algebra; its
a privilege to
teach a group
that wants to
learn
what
youre teaching.
Styers
prides himself
on
staying
heavily
inSTYERS
volved in his
lessons by creating music on a daily basis. In
addition to being the marching
band director, he also runs the
concert band and the jazz band.
Styers met his colleague Doug
Barber at Shawnee High School,
where he graduated in 1997. Barber was the band director at
Shawnee when Styers was a student. He was able to help Styers
get involved at Seneca after he
graduated from West Chester
University where he played
piano.
Percussion is my main instrument now, but Ive been playing
music since I was in kindergarten, Styers said. Im a lifelong.

Seneca High Schools No. 23 Adriana Tirado sets up the Golden Eagle offense as she look to spark a
comeback against Winslow. Seneca ran into a tough team last week as they suffered a 57-35 loss,
bringing their overall record on the season to 4-6.

Use of district-wide STEM program

made possible with grant
Systems is donating another
$7,500 to the district for the program again this year; the district
has not yet decided how the funds
will be used.
We are looking forward to a
partnership with BAE Systems in
which their engineers can serve

boards for our students working
on capstone projects, said
Heather Xenakis, director of curriculum and instruction at

School budget talks are about to begin

chool budgets are on the horizon
statewide. There once was a
time when residents had a direct way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey
right now? School board member has
to be at or near the top of the list.
Whether you support Gov. Christies
approach to budgeting, school board
members have had a tough time dealing with a reduction in state aid over
the last few years.
The vast majority of board members dont want to raise taxes and/or

cut services. But, sometimes, there is

no other option.
Across the state, almost all school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas
for cutting expenses and raising revenues?
Whatever the budget situation

make things better?

We invite you to write letters to the
editor to share your thoughts with the
rest of the community. If you support
the budget, if you oppose it, if you
have ideas that could bring additional
revenue into your school district or
help to cut costs, now is the time to
share them.
Between now and when the school
budget is passed, be involved as much
as you can. Attend school board meetings and express your thoughts. Public
school taxes account for the largest
percentage of your tax bill, after all.
Youll be sending a message to your
board of education regarding what
you would like to see take place in future years years that promise to be
difficult yet again.

Event on Jan. 22 will raise money and awareness for Hope Loves Company
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
When faced with taking on a challenge
or taking the easy way out, the Seneca
High School Student Council embraced the
test.
Each year, the New Jersey Association
of Student Council Executive board chooses a charity to sponsor. This year, the charity is Hope Loves Company.
We could have just written a check
from our funds to support this years charity, but they decided to put a fundraiser together in order to truly understand what
the organization is about and bring this
awareness into the community, guidance
counselor and head of student council
Erica Maira said.
The group decided to put together a dinner and silent auction at the high school

with an open invitation. The community

service club, led by advisor Lynn Ritter,
has taken over the food aspect of the event.
The event will take place on Jan. 22 from
6 to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets will be
sold at the door for $5, and guests will have
the opportunity to buy one ticket to win a
basket for $10 or three tickets for $25.
All money raised at the event will be donated directly to the HLC charity.
Founded in 2007, HLC became the only
non-profit in the U.S. dedicated to the children of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis patients. The mission of the group is to provide emotional and educational support to
children and young adults who have family
members battling ALS.
The majority of funding for ALS goes to
research and patient care. While that is important, the children of these patients need
to be addressed as well. It is estimated that

BAE Systems awards

LRHSD grant
program from PLTW is a highly
competitive program designed to
attract and retain students interested in pursuing a STEM-related
post-secondary education and, ultimately,
career.
Currently,
Lenape and Seneca high schools
are in their second full year of the
program, and Cherokee and
Shawnee high schools are in the
inaugural year. BAE Systems, located in Mt. Laurel, is just one of
the community partners that enables LRHSD to offer the program.
BAE Systems is proud to partner with the Lenape Regional
High School District to help inspire the next generation and ignite their passion for STEM. We
look forward to continuing our
partnership in 2016 and beyond,
said Tony Contino, program manager/department
manager,

AEGIS TECHREP Engineering

Support Services, BAE Systems,
Inc.
PLTW, a non-profit organization, is the leading provider of
STEM education curriculum programs in schools across the United States. PLTW works to prepare
students for the global economy,
one increasingly focused on highgrowth and technology-driven occupations. According to PLTW, by
2018, the nation will have more
than 1.2 million unfilled STEM
jobs because there will not be
enough qualified workers; PLTW
advocates STEM learning because the organization believes
those fields will provide the
most job growth now and in the
future.
According to Xenakis, the
LRHSD STEM course is interdisciplinary in its approach to learning and is offered as an elective
independent of any specific department. The curriculum is
standards-based and aligned with
both Common Core and Next
Generation Science Standards.

Colleagues
nominated Styers
COLLEAGUES
Continued from page 1
Styers credited his father, who
was also a music major in college,
for his musical talents.
Styers runs the Seneca band in
a unique way that not only enhances students musical skills
but also allows them to grow in
other areas.
Like most sports, we have our
high-scoring years and our lowscoring years, Styers said. But
for me, its about the journey and
what the students learn as they
go through the program.
While the Golden Eagles
marching band practices and
competes in a similar fashion to
sports teams, Styers attempts to
schedule practices and events to
allow students to be a part of
other clubs. He places a specific
emphasis on getting involved
with something outside of academics.
All of my students have a skill,
whether its being able to play an

instrument well or being able to

sing well. Whatever it is you are
good at, utilize that to the best of
your ability, Styers preaches to
his students.
Being the band director and so
heavily involved in music at the
high school, Styers is in a very
visible role, and his colleagues
recognized this when they nominated him for the award.
Its all very humbling. Ive
never looked at myself as a
teacher of the year candidate or
anything of that nature. Thats
just the way it kind of happened. I
just do my job, Styers said.
He considers the teachers at
Seneca to be some of the best in
education, so to be honored
among that group has been a special experience for Styers.
Being selected as teacher of the
year at his high school has catapulted Styers as a nominee for a
district, county or even statewide
award.
He will now focus on working
on an application that will enable
him to be a candidate for these
next levels of awards.
