Pre-requisites
Materials Science
Subject aims
The purpose of this course is to provide a general understanding on the physical and
chemical principles involved in the preparation, processing and characterization of
advanced non-metallic materials.
Learning
outcomes

It is expected that the student after taking the course will be able to:
Demonstrate basic insights into the synthesis and characterization of various
types of advanced inorganic materials, focusing on ceramic, porous and
nanostructured materials.
Demonstrate basic knowledge and practical use of the most common
methods (thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM) for characterization
of solid materials.
Select, plan and carry out suitable synthesis methods for producing a
specified inorganic material, and also plan, implement and verify that the
desired substance has been produce

Indicative syllabus content:

Introduction. Demand of advanced materials, design principles and processing. Introduction of sol-gel
science and technology. Hydrolysis and condensation. Particulate sol and gel. Porous materials from solgel. Fibres and whiskers: carbon fibres, glass, Al 2O3, SiC fibres. Ceramics matrix composites: different
types, their preparation and properties. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Introduction to
nanotechnology. Concept of nano materials, scale/dimensional aspects, top down and bottom up
approaches for preparing nano materials. Advantages and limitations at the nano level, thermodynamic
aspects at the nano level, health and environmental issue. Techniques of advanced materials
measurement: thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM.
Learning delivery:
The education consists of lectures, group work, laboratory exercises, and project work.
Participation in the practical laboratory work and group education associated with this is compulsory. After
consultation with the relevant teacher, an examiner may rule that a student is not obliged to participate in
certain compulsory education if there are special grounds for th
