Abstract
Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection which is common in tropical and subtropical
countries. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes had been considered a primary
vector of the said virus. Malaybalay city is one of the two cities of the
province of Bukidnon that was affected by the said vector-borne
disease. In spite of the effort of the local government of Bukidnon in
campaigning against dengue, it is reported that Malaybalay City has
the highest increase of dengue cases at 430.77% for the first quarter
of 2013 as compared to the same period of the previous year. With the
establishment of the GIS team of Malaybalay City and with their
household integrated survey system, spatial datasets are available in
mapping and employing hotspot analysis of prevalence of dengue in
the locality.
Collected clinical dengue cases were geocoded using GIS software which corresponds to
the actual household location of patients and will be represented as point feature in the
map. To have a thorough assessment of the distribution of household in the study area,
analysis of clustering was performed. Clustering identification employed the Average
Nearest Neighbor on the household point feature. The nearest neighbor index was
calculated based on the average distance from each patients households. Based on the
value of returned index, it is possible to assess if the cases are clustered or dispersed.
After the clustering identification, a hotspot analysis was employed using the geocoded
patients household as input feature. The hotspot analysis identify concentration of
dengue cases or identification of hotbed or hotspot over the study area. Instead of
employing a traditional density mapping, the analysis employ Gi* statistics, a method
based on the statistical significance of feature (points or household locations). Based on
the resulting z-score of the hotspot analysis, a heatmap will be generated to identify
statistically significant concentration of dengue cases. Through this analysis, concern
agency may be able to focus their resources in effectively implementing prevention and
control of dengue cases.
