Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India
examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the
candidate in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering / Technology /
Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science. The GATE score of a
candidate reflects a relative performance level in a particular subject in the
exam. The score is used for admissions to post-graduate programs (eg. M.E.,
M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) in Indian institutes of higher education with financial
assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies. The score may

First of all, start believing that GATE is your goal. Make up your mind
for the preparation. What we are discussing in this topic, it has to be
implemented with whole hearted efforts. Dont think too much, start
working.
Consistency: It is difficult to maintain, but there is no other option. You need to
complete some part of your studies on daily basis.
Keep a track:
- What is remaining?
- What is done?
- Which subjects need revision?
Note: Easy & Favourite Subjects first.
Along with your technical subjects, you have 15marks for aptitude
questions. Practise regularly for this section. These 15marks are like bonus
marks.
Time Management: Final year students get about 7-8 months for their
preparation. Along with preparation of GATE they also have their regular
college studies.
You may divide your time as follows: 7 = 4+2+1
- 4 months = Learn all subjects of your GATE syllabus. Start from the
beginning
- Next 2 months = Practising more questions
- Last 1 month = Revision & increasing the speed of solving the questions.
During the critical time of your preparation (last 3 months) it is essential to be
in touch with all the subjects in parallel & in depth as well.
During the last few days, Dont waste time reading all the concepts again.
Reading the whole text may not be possible for all of us. Do refer previous year
GATE question papers so that you may get idea what you have to read. Dont
waste your time watching NPTEL videos.
Self Belief: you should have the belief that Yes, I can crack it...!! It keeps you
pushing towards your goal and motivates you when needed.

Caution: Have Self Belief, not over confidence.

You can pass your semester exams with mere efforts, but cracking GATE will
require huge efforts..!!
Reference books contain lengthy contents & description. Dont read the part
which is not important. Learn to filter / summarize the concepts. It will
definitely save your time. Make concise notes.
Make handwritten notes of concepts. It will help in quick review during final
revisions
Problem Practising While practising problems, make sure that you use
standard books, i.e. they should meet the standard of GATE exam. Previous
GATE papers is the best option for practising.
Dont feel depressed if your & dear ones dont consider you worthy of
cracking GATE; If you really want to do it, DO IT.
Learn to skip:
If you feel that some part of your syllabus is quite difficult for you, you may
skip it. Dont waste time on it. Be perfect at what you know. Dont go on
skipping the entire syllabus.
Attempt mock GATE tests:
Gate exam is conducted online. There is a possibility that some students might
get nervous or they may get frightened
- What will happen if PC shutdowns by mistake
- What if server fails ?
Remove all these worries by attempting online practice test. The IIT which is
organising GATE exam conducts a free practice test for all. Along with this,
many websites also conduct free practice tests. Do attempt so that you will learn
- How to manage time
- How to navigate through the paper
- How to save answers
- How to skip the questions you dont know etc. etc.

Ebooks or HardCopy ??
It may not be possible for all the students to purchase all the reference books as
they cost a lot. So you have another option using ebooks (or PDFs or softcopy
of books).
But Ebooks are a source of distraction. When you read ebooks in your
PC or mobile phones, you may get disturbed because of your addiction towards
Internet or you may just keep searching for other things in PC. Also most of the
students waste a lot of time in searching for these ebooks. They just keep on
collecting several ebooks & also get confused which ebook to refer as there are
a wide range of ebooks..You cannot even highlight main points an ebook.
Avoid Ebooks..
During exam:
- Be cool & relaxed. Be confident.
- Keep boosting yourself that You Can Crack Your GATE Exam with flying
colours
- Remember The more calm you are, the more easy you will feel the entire
paper
- Initially have a view on the entire paper. 2-3 questions in technical section
are always very easy.
- Attempt easy questions first this will increase your confidence.
- Attempt General Ability section first if you feel it is.
- Important: You will be given a scribble pad for doing rough work. While
using scribble pad, enumerate he questions give question no. while solving
it on rough paper, so that it may be useful later.
- Dont keep on counting the number of questions you have attempted. This
will waste your time.
