Note: Word study focuses on patterns and rules. We hope that students will begin to use some of the
patterns in their writing and recognize that English is governed by rules that can be followed to help with
accurate spelling. These words to do not need to be memorized but used as puzzle pieces for children to
look for clues, notice patterns, make comparisons etc.
News From Ms. Tindalls Class
We are beginning the preparations for our grade one performance on taking care of animal habitats. While
well be covering much content in class, you can help your child start to think about, What makes a great
performer? What do actors, singers, performers do that keep the audience interested? Were hoping youll
discover loud clear voices, hand actions, facial expressions, big movements, eyes on the audience and many
more behaviours that will inspire our young performers.
And please Save the date for our show! Thursday February 26th, 8:30am.

Monday
Reading: What are the features of a non-fiction book?
Word Study: Identify words in your books that have the long <i> and short <i> sounds.
Math: Count forward 100 days on a calendar. What will the date be in 100 days? What do
you think you will be doing do on that date? Next week we will celebrate our 100th day of
school!
Tuesday
Reading: What are the features of a story?
Word Study: Find words with the long <i> sound in your reading books. What are some
different ways to make the long <i> sound?
Math: Discuss with an adult or look in a shop to find out what you could buy with 100 cents
(sen) and what could you buy with 100 dollars (RM)?

Wednesday
Reading: Compare a story to a non-fiction book? How are they alike? How are they
different?
Math: Think about the number 100. How big is it? How much space do you think 100 cars
would take up? 100 chairs? 100 nuts? 100 grains of rice?
Thursday
Reading: Do you prefer non-fiction, fiction or both equally? Ask someone else the question.
Talk to each other about your personal preferences.
Math: What would you like to have 100 of? What would you definitely not want to have 100
of? How many ways can you make 100?
Friday
Poetry collection: Recite poems and sing songs. Return it to school on Monday.
Hunt for non-fiction texts (EG newspapers, menus, tickets, timetables, some travel
brochures). What is the purpose of the text you found? Who is the audience? (ie Who
did the author write it for?)
