DEFINITION

o
er

For the definition of a wide flat see EURONORM 79.

TOLERANCES ON DIMENSIONS

3.1 Width
The tolerance on width is 2% of the nominal width
but shall not exceed 10 mm. Smaller values shall be spe
cially agreed at the time of the enquiry and order.

3.2 Thickness
Tolerances on thickness on wide flats are given in

table 1. Wide flats may be supplied with either asymmet

rical tolerances (class I) or with symmetrical tolerances
(class II). At the time of the enquiry and order the purch
aser shall indicate if class I or class II tolerances are re
quired. Smaller tolerance values shall be specially agreed
at the time of enquiry and order.
The requirements in respect of surface quality, dressing
and repair are specified in EURONORM 163 or in the
appropriate quality standard.

Only the last edition of the EURONORMS quoted is valid

3.4.1
If no details of length are specified at the time of enquiry
and order, wide flats shall be supplied in manufacturing
lengths between 2 000 and 12 000 mm.

3.4.2
If lengths are specified to be exact, wide flats shall be
supplied with a tolerance on length of 0/ +200 mm.
More precise tolerances may be agreed at the time of the
enquiry and order, in this case values of 0/ +50 mm or
0/ +25 mm are the preferred tolerances.

as in the figure on the left

4 TOLERANCES ON SHAPE
Tolerances on shape are applicable only to wide flats
with a maximum specified minimum yield strength of.
460 N/mm 2 . For quenched and tempered steels and steels
with specified minimum yield strengths in excess of 460
N/mm 2 shape tolerances shall be the subject of agreement
between the manufacturer and purchaser at the time of
the enquiry and order.
Figure 5

4.1 Straightness
Wide flats may be supplied:
(a) normal straightness; or
(b) special straightness.
At the time of the enquiry or order the purchaser shall
indicate if normal straightness or special straightness is
required.

4.2.2

The straightness tolerance qt (see figure 4) is:

The tolerance on flatness k2 in the direction of rolling

related to a measuring length of 1 000 mm shall be:

(a) 0.25% of li for normal straightness;

(a) 7 mm for normal flatness;

(b) 0.125% of lj for special straightness.

(b) 3 mm for special flatness.

Over shorter distances, the straightness tolerances q2 be

tween two points at a distance 12 (where 12 is equal to or
greater than 1 000 mm) shall not exceed 0.25% of 12.

In the case of a shorter measuring length of 500 mm up

to but not including 1 000 mm, the tolerance on flatness
k2 shall be:

These values apply for wide flats with nominal thicknes

ses up to and including 50 mm. For nominal thicknesses
in excess of 50 mm the straightness tolerance shall be the
subject of agreement at the time of the enquiry and
order.

(a) 1% of the measuring length for normal flatness;

(b) 0.5% of the measuring length for special flatness.

4.2.3
The tolerances on flatness k3 over the whole length L of
the product in the longitudinal direction shall be:
(a) 0.7% of L, but with a maximum of 20 mm for
normal flatness;
(b) 0.3% of L, but with a maximum of 10 mm for
special flatness.

4.3 Squareness

-Q

<

Figure 4

The out-of-square value u is the orthogonal projection of

one transverse edge on one longitudinal edge (see figure
6). The tolerance on this out-of-square value shall be 5
mm for widths of 500 mm or less and 0.01 b for widths
b over 500 mm.

The tolerance of flatness k, perpendicular to the direction

of rolling (see figure 5) shall be 0.3% of b. This value
applies for wide flats with nominal thicknesses up to and
including 50 mm. For thicknesses in excess of 50 mm the
flatness tolerance shall be the subject of agreement at the
time of enquiry and order.

5 MASS
5.1
The difference between the actual delivered mass and the
theoretical mass is expressed as a percentage of the
theoretical mass of the delivery. Unless otherwise
specified in the appropriate quality standard, the theoreti
cal mass shall be determined by using a volumetric mass
of 7.85 kg/dm3.

In the case of delivered quantities over 50 t the tolerance

on mass shall be agreed at the time of ordering.

5.4
Differences in mass which exceed the limits of table 4,
shall not be a reason for rejection, unless otherwise
agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

5.2

Table 4

According to the ordered thickness tolerances (see 3.2)

wide flats shall be delivered with asymmetrical tolerances
on mass according to class I of table 4 or symmetrical
tolerances according to class II of table 4.

Difference between delivered mass and theoretical mass

as a % of the theoretical mass

5.3
Upper and lower limits for the mass differences are given
in table 4. These values apply to wide flats in ordered ex
act length (see 3.4.2) having the same nominal dimen
sions and made of the same steel grade and with a maxi
mum delivered quantity of 50 t.

6 MEASUREMENTS
6.1 Width

6.4 Length

Width shall be measured at any point at right angles to

the longitudinal axis of the product.

The length of the product is deemed to be the length of

the largest rectangle contained within the product.

6.5 Straightness

6.2 Thickness
Thickness shall be measured at any point situated more
than 20 m m J o m the longitudinal edges of the wide flat,
other than locally ground areas (see 3.2).

6.3 Difference in thickness across the width of

one transverse cross section
The difference in thickness across the width of one trans
verse cross section shall be measured on a line running at
right angles to the longitudinal edges.
The measuring points shall be at a distance of at least 20
mm from the longitudinal edges and at least 100 mm
from the ends of the wide flat.

ECU 1.20

The straightness tolerance is the maximum distance be

tween a longitudinal edge and the straight line joining the
two ends of the measuring distance. It is measured on the
concave side. When determining the deviation, a length
of 50 mm at each end of the wide flat shall be disre
garded (see also figure 4).

6.6 Flatness
To measure flatness the wide flat shall rest freely on a
flat horizontal surface. F latness deviations k2 (see 4.2.2)
shall be measured at a distance of at least 200 mm from
the ends of the wide flat in the case of normal flatness
and at least 100 mm from the ends of the wide flat in
the case of special flatness. F latness shall be measured
parallel to the longitudinal edges.
