As for the reality of the meaning of the term Taghut there are several statements and the best
them is the statement of Ibn Qayyim ( ) when he said: The Taghut is all that which
causes the person to exceed the limits with regards to that which is worshipped, followed, or
obeyed. Therefore Taghut include all those whom the people go to for judgment apart from
Allah and His Messenger; or they worship him besides Allah; or he is followed without a
clear proof from Allah; or they obey him without knowing whether it is obedience towards
Allah () . These are the Tawaghit 1 in general, and once you think about it and you
think about the circumstances of the people you notice that the majority of the people have
left the worship of Allah to the worship of the Taghut, and from the obedience and following
of Allah and His Messenger to the obedience and following of the Taghut. 2

Summarized, there are three types of the general Taghut:

1. The Taghut of judgment. The evidence for that is the statement of Allah ()

Have you not seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent
down to you, and that which was sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgment (in
their disputes) to the Taghut (false judges) while they have been ordered to reject them. But
Shaytaan (Satan) wishes to lead them far astray. 3

The three general types of Taghut

2. The Taghut of worship. The evidence for that is the statement of Allah ()

Those who avoid Taghut by not worshipping them and turn to Allah (in repentance), for them
are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My slaves. 1

Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from
darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are
Taghut, they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and
they will abide therein forever. 3

Allah ( ) says in another verse:

Those who believe, fight in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of
Taghut. So fight you against the friends of Shaytaan (Satan). Ever feeble indeed is the plot of
Shaytaan (Satan). 4
