The Huffington Post adds to

this list that planning for spring
may help, so I may just have to
give my junior high students a
writing assignment to do just
that.
An important thing for junior
high and high school students
to remember is that grades recently reset with the beginning
of second semester, but they
will not reset again during the
school year (except for junior
high students taking quarter
classes such as Spanish, computer apps, ag, etc.), so it is important to not dig an academic
hole that is difficult to get out
of. School is a marathon, not a
sprint, and every assignment is
important.
Students, if you are having a
hard time motivating yourself
this winter, find someone to
talk to. Your teachers are here
to support and help you, as are
your school counselors and
many of your peers.
Parents, if youre worried
about your child or children, let
someone at school know.
My fellow teachers, if youre
struggling, know that youre
not alone, and collaborate with
your colleagues, friends, and
family to make some of the
aforementioned strategies a
reality and hold each other accountable to doing them.
When I was a sophomore in
college, I was a member of the
Pryor Leadership Studies program at William Jewell College. As part of the program,
we were required to take an
Outward Bound survival-type
trip to the Florida Everglades
over the winter break. The night
before we flew out, I started to
panic. I did not want to go. My
wise Aunt Karen, whose house
I was staying at in order to be
closer to my flight in the morning, gave me some advice that
came in quite handy: I can
do anything as long as its not
forever. I definitely used that
thought several times in the
Everglades, the following fall
when I suffered from debilitating homesickness while studying abroad, and when delivering each of my three children
medicine-free. It has also gotten me through a third quarter
or two. This third quarter will
also end; hopefully we will all
be wiser and stronger for having hung in there.

nothing to look forward to dilemma by guaranteeing Martin

Luther King Day and Presidents
Day off. Hopefully we will return from those days rested,
inspired, inspirational, and motivated.
The adults in the building do
their best to hide their Third
Quarter Blues and continue
to maintain high expectations
from students. In addition to the
days off, we have some professional development opportunities - both inside and outside
the building - that should refill
our excitement reserves for
content and techniques in our
classrooms.
If you are worried that you as
a student or if you are worried
as a parent that your child is
struggling especially this year,
here are some tips from PsychCentral that might help. As
always, if you have extreme depression that does not improve,
seek medical attention.
1. Reset your body clock
by sleeping in on the
weekends until you
wake up on your own. (I
loved hearing this one!)
2. Try to get at least 20
minutes of sunshine a
day, either outside, by a
window, or using a light
box. (This was a good
one for me to read since
Im often in the building before the sun is
fully up and leave after
the sun has completely
set.)
3. Stay physically active.
(All I can say to this one
is, Oops. But Im trying to get better!)
4. Eat a variety of foods fruits, vegetables, protein, and even desserts
in moderation. (I love
our school food program and the unlimited
fresh fruits and veggies
we get!)
5. Socialize. (I try to give
the kids some time to
catch up after the break,
but we also have a lot
to learn. Hopefully the
students are using their
down times to build
quality relationships.)
6. Pamper yourself. (Okay,
if you insist!) This may
include hot baths, your
favorite hot tea, reading
a favorite book, etc.

ROCK PORT R-II SCHOOL DISTRICT

Tue

By Amy Skillen
As the middle of my eighteenth year of teaching gets
underway, I feel yet again the
lag that comes every year from
students and teachers alike. Im
not exactly sure what causes it
or how to best fight it, but as
with many issues one faces in
life, I think the first step is acknowledging it exists.
Third quarter is rough. Students have a hard time maintaining the intensity they started
the school year with and that
they are able to keep in second
quarter with the excitement of
the upcoming holiday break.
Many teachers have a hard time
with third quarter for the same
reasons. We start in August
with excitement to try out new
ideas weve discovered over the
summer, excitement to see our
colleagues every day again and
the opportunity to get to know
new students.
What happens over Christmas
vacation that makes third quarter so hard? The first problem,
at least for me, is not getting to
sleep in anymore. I love sleeping in. I think maybe I need
to start a school that begins
around 10:00 a.m. I also hate
the cold, which makes getting
up that much harder. And then
theres the fact that its still
dark in the mornings. I try to
buoy myself with the fact that
the Winter Solstice has passed
and so the hours of daylight are
increasing, but my body is hard
to convince in the wee hours of
a cold January morning.
I think another issue that
makes third quarter a challenge
is the post-holiday let-down.
We build up to great feasts with
families, giving gifts with anticipation, and then, poof! Its
all over and done with and there
is nothing to look forward to
until... well, May, when school
gets out and the pool opens and
its still light out after 8:00 p.m.
And honestly, right now, that
feels like 5,000 years away.
So here I sit, typing an article
for Blue Jay Corner because I
have failed to inspire my mass
media students to fight off the
Third Quarter Blues, and we
have a big hole on this page that
needs to be filled. How can we
solve this issue facing so many
at Rock Port R-II?
The calendar committee has
done their best to help with the
