STEP 1
Find a nice photo
this is from http://www.flickr.com/photos/zakwitnij/ page link http://www.flickr.com/photos

STEP 2
I like make the subject a bit more impressive, more tall ...here just scale up but only the height
will work

STEP 3
then open gmic
look under the preview "output option" and change to "new layer"
now in the GMIC filter list menu search Artistic/bw- pencil
You have a button to maximize the preview when you get something good as

DO NOT CLICK OK...BUT "APPLY"

STEP 4
(Click ok will close GMIC , we want still use it )
Now if you did right (changing the gmic output option to "new layer" the focus of GMIC is still on
the original
Now we want add some depth and texture to our work, so chose Artistic/BW-Sketch
Now the filter has many options, and may be very slow also to update the preview
But here we just need to capture the main structure so also a rought sketch as this could work
(NOTE this filter may do much more neat and detailed sketch ... i did quickly because i needed
only as effect layer

STEP 5
OK NOW you may close GMIC and change the mode of this layer in multiply
... WE ALMOST GOT IT !

STEP 6
NOW Layer new from visible, increase contrast

THIS IS ALL FOR BW...

BUR if you LIKE YOU ADD THE COLORS BACK:

STEP 7
Move the scaled up original on top of the "new from visible layer", and since a want it moody and
dark , here i change layer mode to multiply
(that will also darken ...you may experiment other mode for other effects)

NOTE here i didn't do any post work

But adding layer mask to the layers, you may as example lighten the black textures on the ground
in front of the house, just painting the layermask (of the sketch layer with grey or black on part to
lighten )

Thank you for that. Cool. It's good to get some tips for G'MIC. It can be rather intimidating the
first time in it.

Fine deal, you give us tips then burn up the results. Ever hear of recycling?

Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

If you look well the color version in several area ,as in the path in front of the house and here and
there in the garden and the sky
the dark texture is a bit too black
It is very easy to correct, just add a white layermask to the "sketch" layer
Make the layermask active but look the visible.
with a brush using black at low opacity brush over the part you want lighten ...and you may see
the result in real time
I may add this tomorrow..now is too late

Well i figured if PC can light a couple fires I could at the very least throw around a few lightning
bolts! .. heheh
I almost did add a couple of planets in the night sky, but didnt want to make it too busy. (which
it already is) =P
Wilbur popping out of a dimensional window in one of the pyramids would have been cool
though!

Your pyramid image is cool, Rod. The lightning connections give me an eerie feeling like the
pyramids are communicating. The pyramids always give me a feeling of awe anyway.

This ... is ... AWESOME Seriously, I thought G'MIC was nice, but I never combined different
options together like this.
P.S.: If you get the color back in by moving the original layer on top and changing the layer mode
to multiplication, you can Blur it by around 20 (for rather big images) and play around with the
opacity of the Sketch-layer to make it look even more like a painted picture.
