U W-Superior conducted its first Winter
Commencement on Dec. 9, 2006, to honor students
graduating at the end of the summer and fall semesters.
Previously, those graduates could attend the traditional
ceremony in May, but because of the growing number
of mid-year graduates, university leaders decided a
December ceremony was most appropriate to recognize
the graduates’ accomplishments.
The ceremony was held in Old Main’s Thorpe
Langley Auditorium – the first Commencement to be
held there in decades. Older Superior graduates will
remember receiving their diplomas in the auditorium,
but the spring ceremony was moved to Wessman Arena
after its completion to accommodate the growing
number of the university’s students and their guests.
