OCEAN OASIS
1) On Rasa Island elegant terns and seagulls live together. Living
together in Biology is called Symbiosis. What type of Symbiosis did you
observe during the interaction of these two birds?
It is called Mutualism because they both benefit from each other. The
elegant terns benefits from the size of the seagulls (which protects
them from their pray) and the seagulls benefits from the food of the
elegant terns.
2) Kangaroo rat and rattle snake never drink water! But you know
organisms need water to survive. In class you learned a very important
way for organisms to obtain water. So how do they manage?
Kangaroo rats can make all their water metabolically, from the
digestion of dry seeds and the rattle snake gets water by eating their
pray, such as the kangaroo rats.
3) Gray whales follow the longest migration route of any mammal on
earth. According to the movie: What is the distance in kilometers for a
round trip?
It is approx. 20.000 km.
4) In science, scientific names for species must be written correctly. If
you forgot the rules explained in Unit 1 in this class, you need to read
post in Bb. No credit will be given if scientific names are written
incorrectly.
Choose your favorite three organisms in the movie and give the correct
common name and scientific name.
Elegant Tern: Thalasseus elegans
Northern elephant Seal: Mirounga angustirostris
Tiburon caf sandbar shark: Carcharhinus plumbeu
5) Some fish are broadcast spawners. Why? How do they spawn? What
is an example of a fish (in the movie) that is a broadcaster?
Spawn is the eggs and sperm released or deposited by aquatic animals
in water (most of the time) according to the Merriam-Webster
dictionary online. One example of this movie is the Creolefish, they do
this by bursting their eggs and sperm into water and mixing them into
a water column.

6) Give an example of a fish in the movie that is protecting the eggs in

the nest. It is important to write scientific and common name.
An example is the Panama sergeant major with a scientific name:
Abudefduf troschelii.
7) What is the Phylum for the organisms called barnacles? How do they
eat?
The phylum is Arthropoda and as the tide comes in, a muscle opens up
like four plates, and the feathery legs of the barnacle sift the water for
food. All six pairs of the feather-like feeding appendages, called cirri,
are jointed and set with sensory hairs which brush through the water
collecting plankton for the barnacle to eat.
8) The animals that look like plants in a garden belong to what
Phylum?
They belong to Pylum: Cnidaria.
9) What are mysids? Be specific (pay attention to their taxonomy and
mention the Phylum)
Mysida, whos scientific name is Hemimysis anomala and come from
the phylum Arthropoda, Subphylumof Crustacea. These are small,
shrimp-like crustaceans, their common name is opossum shrimps; they
are found throughout the world in both shallow and deep marine
waters.
10) What is the Scientific name (remember to write it correctly) of the
Pacific seahorse? What is the meaning of the name? What and how do
they eat?
The scientific name of the Pacific seahorse is Hippocampus ingens and
the meaning hippos horse and campus means sea monster. They
eat Plankton, small microorganisms, and crustaceans.
Freebie! What was the role of your Professor Beller (Moore) in this
movie?

Patricia Beller, M.S., Science Liaison Officer, Biodiversity Research Center of
the Californias, San Diego Natural History Museum. As a marine biologist and
an experienced aquarist, Patricia supported the project with her extensive
experience with fishes of the Sea of Corts, providing technical information
on scientific and common names, ecology, behavior and conservation.
