FEBRUARY 2016

JIB SHEET
THE PORT CLINTON YACHT CLUB

From Your Commodore, Doug Shealy

January got off to a great
start without a blizzard or
ice storm. The annual Recognition and Awards Dinner was held on Saturday
the 9th. What a nice event
to recognize those who
have served our club. Jim
and Bev Syrowsky along
with their committee
served an outstanding elegant sit down Prime Rib
dinner for 84 people. It
was nice to recognize our
past commodores for their
service as 16 were in attendance. Several deserving
people walked away with
our special honorary
awards for 2015. The
George
Shade Memorial Trophy for the
Junior
Sailor of the
Year was
awarded to
the Thistle
team of JJ
Miller, Will
Taylor, and Ben Springer.
They worked hard all year
to improve and prove that
they could win as a team.
What a well-deserved
award for a great group of
young men. The Shark
Perpetual Trophy for the
Skipper of the Year was
awarded to Linda Springer.
I understand that Linda not
only helped with coordina-

tion at all the Jr. Sailing

events, but also was a big
part in fostering the development of several of our Jr.
Race Team Competitors.
Our final award was The
Oliver True Memorial
Trophy. It
was my honor
to present this
award to Gloria (Glo)
Denos. Some
may know her
as the photographer who
attends all the
events while
others think
she is our lawn mowing
specialist. She is just one
dedicated member who
really loves this club. Her
contributions of time are
well beyond what we could
expect from a member.
Congratulations to all the
winners and a special
thanks to all those that attended to make it a special
evening.
Our social committee continues to work on the social
calendar and yearbook,
planning events and placing members to serve on
these events. They have
received over 400 questionnaires back. If you have
not done so, please return
yours, as this is the only
way they know what committee you would prefer to

serve on. Also, if you have

any changes in address or
contact information, please
get that information to our
Secretary PC Todd Bickley.
We have several social

events to look forward to

this month. The famous
February BYOS, the Half
Way to the Bay party featuring The Junk, a Sailing Fundraiser, and a Souper Bowl Bar Party will
provide some great socialization with your fellow
PCYC members and
friends. Also, look out for
our first cruise-out as our
new Fleet Captain of
Power, Steve Hales has a
Wine Tour planned for
February 27th. This all
sounds like fun. Im looking forward to seeing you
when you cross over the
bridge to come to the Best
Yacht Club on the Great
Lakes.

Well we knew it would happen. The cold has set in and we are all hiding inside. We have
plenty of things to keep us busy though, painting, cleaning and repairing equipment. The lists
go on.
Some things you may see happening outside is dredging along the front wall in front of the
pool area and installation of a new power pole for the pool house. We are also installing water/ sewer deduct meters for the pool fill and dockage water supply lines. We were able to get
the trenches dug during the mild weather and are waiting for a break in the cold to get these
meters installed.
It is warm and cozy inside and the
view is great. Come on in and join us
for a cocktail and some good conversation.
Life is good, Bob

Fleet Captain of Power, Steve Hales

The first event for 2016
has been announced: the
Wine Cruise Out set for
February 27, 2016! Be
sure to review the flyer
for details and sign up
now, as the list is quickly
growing. We have other
events to be announced
shortly (teaser: Huron,
Ohio & Detroit Yacht

Club!) - so stay tuned!

And its that time of year
to begin reviewing and
completing your Spring
Launch checklists. If
you dont already have
one, be sure to visit the
BoatUS website, as they
even offer an app for
your phone.

Winter Greetings to
all PCYC Members. It has
been a busy Winter for us. We
returned for the Recognition
Dinner on January 29 to present the awards for the Sailing
Fleet and then back to Florida
for the Ft. Lauderdale Olympic Class Regatta.
The Shark Award
was presented to Linda
Sprenger for her outstanding
support for the Jr. Sailing
Program. Linda stepped up to
assist with running the race
team and with coordination
for Jr. Bay Week. She continues her support and will serve
as Jr. race Team and Learn to
Sail coordinator for 2016.
Thanks Linda!
The George Schade
Memorial Trophy for top Jr.
Race Team sailor went to the
PCYC Thistle Team of Jayson Miller, Skipper, Ben
Sprenger, Middle/Tactician

and Will Taylor, Forward.

Their performance as a first
year Thistle Team was outstanding winning the Travelers Series and placing 2nd at
Jr. Bay Week. Congratulations on a job well done.
During the Recognition Dinner I also had the
opportunity to thank our Jr.
Instructors Emma Eickert and
JJ Miller. They both did an
outstanding job resulting in
new race team members in the
Opti Class. Nice job!
January is a busy
month for the Sail Fleet. The
Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser
is scheduled for February 19
followed by the Safety At Sea
Seminar on February 20. The
Safety at Sea Seminar is designed for offshore sailors
competing in high level
events. There is a lot of good
information in this seminar
for all boaters. We will cover

a number of good topics in

the afternoon session including medical emergencies,
weather, repairs at sea, customs and rescue procedures.
We will be opening the afternoon session to interested
members of PCYC. Details to
follow.
The Sr. Bay Week
will be chaired by myself for
the next 2 years. An organizational meeting will be held on
February 16, 7:00 PM at
PCYC. Anyone with an interest is invited to attend.
The Sail Fleet operates for the benefit of Jr. Sailing at Port Clinton Yacht
Club. Over the years many
children and grandchildren
have taken advantage of the
program. All of our fundraisers benefit this program and
help to keep our rates low for
these training activities. We
also make Sail Fleet Member-

ships available to all PCYC

Members interested in supporting the Jr. Sail Program. We
appreciate the overwhelming
support of our members.
Special thanks to Sara
Hanselman, Treasurer and
Ramon Eickert, Secretary.
These individuals also serve on
the Sail Fleet Executive Committee. Cliff Ruckstuhl will
again chair the Auxiliary Race
Committee. Thanks also go out
to Dave Nighswander for serving as PRO for the Jr. Sail Regatta.
