Activity Title: Tips on How to Read a Play

Activity Date: 26 JANUARY (LESSON 2)
Learning Target: To apply the guidelines on how to read a play.(Institutional
Objective)
EN9V-IVi-28: Determine the meaning of words from a literary text
Reference Title: J.P. Romero, et al., Exploring Life Through English and
American Literature, pp. 307 308
Year Level: Grade 9
CONCEPT NOTES
To understand and to appreciate a play better, readers and
viewers need to observe some guidelines and to develop some skills
such as the following:
1. Visualize the stage production
This helps the viewer or reader to set the frame of the
production with a concrete set-up such as arrangement of props,
lights and performers movements on stage.
2. Empathize with the characters
The audience or readers need to establish the identity of each
character so as to understand him or her. Empathy moves the
audience to react (laugh, cry, get angry, be worried, become afraid
or agitated) with the character.
3. Identify the conflict
The conflict may be psychological, physical or environmental.
While trying to point out the conflict, the viewers or readers
simultaneously realize some motives that propel the performers
into action.
4. Evaluate artistic values

Task
1. What is the importance of visualization in any form of literary piece?
2. Why is it necessary to identify the conflict happening in a story?
Vocabulary: Find the meaning of the following words.

Activity Title: Tips on Staging a Play

Activity Date: 28 JANUARY (LESSON 3)
Learning Target: To apply the guidelines on how to read a play
(Institutional Objective)
Reference Title: J.P. Romero, et al., Exploring Life Through English and
American Literature, pp. 307 308
Year Level: Grade 9
CONCEPT NOTES
For a better stage production:
1. Bring scenes to life with the use of colors, lights, costumes,
sounds, music, etc.
Since a play is interpreted and performed with a specific
setting or time and place as background of the story, the stage
must adequately support the scene with props, and other audiovisual effects.
2. Understand basic dramatic structure
Plotting the development of the action and dialog according
to acts and scenes can help viewers or readers understand a
play. Significant changes in settings should be clear through
change of props or lighting. The thoughts and feelings of the
characters must be clear from dialog and movement since they
signal critical turning points in the development of the plot.

Task (Interpretative Exercise):

Draw your visualization of a stage production of the chapter of Noli Me
Tangere on BaporTabo.
