Activities with
Natural Flow

Welcome to the
LEGO Education way to teach
Activity Packs from LEGO Education are developed by experienced educators
and have a natural flow that engages and motivates students. We call it
the 4C approach: Connect, Construct, Contemplate and Continue.

1 CONNECT
It is important to capture students interest in
order to have a positive and motivating learning
environment. LEGO Education always begins
with an engaging challenge introduced through
real-life video clips, photos, stories or animations
that students can relate to and find compelling.

4 CONTINUE
Extension ideas that present
a new challenge within the
same theme are provided.
Students are encouraged to
change or add features to
their models, thereby leading
them to a new Connect
phase. This allows them to
enter a positive learning spiral,
in which they take on increasingly
difficult challenges.

2 CONSTRUCT
3 CONTEMPLATE

Students work in teams

to solve an open-ended
building task related to the
challenge. They make their
own solutions, then plan,
build and test their models
or software programmes.

Students think about what they have just

constructed and achieved. They discuss the
project at hand, reflect on and adapt their
ideas, and teachers can encourage this process
by asking questions.

Your design brief is as follows:

Build a popcorn cart.
Make a sign that can turn.
Build a mechanism that makes the sign turn when you turn a handle.

When you have finished, test your cart. Count how many times the sign spins for
every five turns of the handle. Assess how easily the sign can be read at a distance.
What makes it easy or difficult to read?

Innovation Lab by LEGO Education in Science Centre Singapore,

is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
The Innovation Lab provides a unique hands-on, minds-on environment that supports and enriches the
entire learning process. Its an innovative way of both learning and teaching one that will stimulate
your students, motivate your teachers and enhance the wider academic reputation of your school.
Research has shown that when we allow children to use multiple senses during the learning process,
they have better chances of fully understanding and remembering what they have learned. We believe
that more playful, creative and hands-on methods engage students of all abilities to achieve results.
While this lends itself to the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) a more
progressive approach can be successfully applied to all curriculum subjects, including literacy.
Tomorrows scientists and engineers are sitting in our classrooms today. Lets build something that
will transform these classrooms into places for creative and successful learning, as well as encourage
and inspire students by bringing the subjects to life.

MyQuake MiniSystem
KJ37979

12+ yrs

$352.90

Using the myQuake miniSystem, students can design,

construct and test structures for earthquake resistance in
a dynamic way. It uses a side-to-side platform with two
accelerometer inputs to measure the acceleration for the
x-, y-, or z-axis. Plus, students control the motion profile
and measure the resulting forces.
myQuake is ideal for teaching about resonant frequencies,
sensor measurement, and data acquisition and analysis. It
includes an activity guide on DVD.
NI miniSystems are small-scale replicas of real-world
systems that connect to NI hardware and software for a
powerful learning experience for science and engineering.
Note: NI miniSystems require an NI myDAQ data-acquisition tool
and LabVIEW for Education software, sold separately.

MyQuake Mini Pack

12+ yrs

Earth science, physics and engineering all combine in the

study of earthquakes to make a dynamic learning
opportunity that is captured in this pack.
Students learn about seismic waves, plate tectonics and
other key concepts; build simple structures to test on the
myQuake; experiment with the Harmonic Highrise to see
resonant frequency; and complete other activities.

MyQuake Mini Pack 2-Student Pack

The two-student pack provides materials and equipment

for two students working as a team; the 10-student pack
provides materials and equipment for 10 students
working in teams of two. A teachers guide and DVD are
included in this pack.
Note: Requires a NI myDAQ per student team, sold separately.

Idea Generators
The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world
are the ones who do."
- Steve Jobs
Innovation is the driving force behind making STEM education effective. Students who practise
innovation become the inventors of tomorrow, creating truly unique and useful solutions for the
problems we face today.
True innovation is obtained through discussion, effective communication and thinking out of
the box. The tools on the following pages are designed to help students to come up with crazy
ideas and discuss them with their peers, and to communicate their thoughts more clearly and
effectively.

FIRST LEGO League
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international enquiry-based programme teaching students ages 9 through
16 about science, technology and collaborative working. FLL is a partnership between the non-profit organisation
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO Group. It had its first
season in 1998. Now over 230,000 students from 80 countries take part.
Impact studies show that students gain an increased interest in science and technology by working with FLL.
FLL does this by providing a practical and engaging way of involving students in the subject areas.

National Junior
Robotics Competition
The National Junior Robotics Competition (NJRC) is an
exciting and unique event organised by Science Centre
Singapore, Agency for Science Technology and Research
(A*STAR) and DSO National Laboratories. This robotics
competition encourages students to develop problem-solving
skills, entrepreneurial skills, creative thinking skills and
team spirit among the participants. The NJRC is about
celebrating the process of learning through interactive,
meaningful experiences.
Over the past 15 years, more than 45,000 participants and
220,000 supporters have gathered for this premier robotics
competition. Every year, the NJRC revolves around a
specific theme and a challenge is revealed to the students
on the day of the Challenge Announcement.

Format of competition
Presentation Week*: Teams present their work to a panel
of judges and are assessed for a number of awards.
Challenge Week*: Teams need to accomplish a mission
using the robots that they have created. Themission comprises
