formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for
tens of thousands of people. The Archbishops appeal is
an invitation to share your blessings and support the
Gospel mission here in Western Oregon.

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST FATHERS
These men will possess a more exact knowledge of the real and true
conditions of human nature, a knowledge embodying the decisions of the
Church and all the new light thrown upon this point, especially by the
theologians of the last three centuries. From this more exact knowledge will
spring a greater confidence in the action of human nature and a readiness to
concede a more extensive field for its activity. [On the Mission of New
Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at
202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

Please pray for:

Frank Navarra Sr. Eileen Brown Vincent Ruscitti
Marjorie Buckshnis Paulist Seminarians Vocations
Edward Tenny, Sr., Grandfather of Alison Olsav
[Know someone we should pray for? Contact Rose in the office.]

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016

Pastoral Corner
Last weekend I was at the Archdiocesan Young Adult Retreat, Living the Works of Mercy. Leading up to the
retreat I was a member of the planning team in which we met twice a month for several hours. During the retreat I
was the retreat Chaplain. I gave a major presentation on the Eucharist and how we are sent forth from mass to
accomplish the Works of Mercy, both spiritual and physical. I heard confessions and coordinated the work of other
priests who also served in various ways on the retreat. Archbishop Sample came and spoke with the young adults and
entertained questions, then led the Praise and Adoration. The young adults (there were 45 in attendance) were very
happy with his presence.
One of the things that moved me the most was leading a Spanish-speaking small group. I learned a lot about
the lives of young Latinos in the Portland area. There were plenty of tears and laughter as we talked about the
struggles they face. It dawned on me that they are in a position that many Italian young adults were in a hundred
years ago in the neighborhood of Saint Philip Neri parish.
On a lighter note, on Saturday night we played Just Dance, which is a computer dance game where you try
emulate the dancer on the screen better than your competitors do. So I challenged the young priest from Columbia to
a dance-off. He is young, athletic, charismatic. well, you get the picture. At least I can say that I made a valiant
effort. Ill content myself with knowing that one of the most important things elders (like me) can do is to bless the
efforts of the young.
I learned a lot from working with fellow young adult ministers on the team headed by Michal Horace, director of
youth and young adult ministry for the archdiocese.
Jesus, as a young adult, came to the synagogue of his home town. All were happy when he read the words of
the prophet Isaiah, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor
And they were pleased with his conclusion: Today these words are fulfilled in your hearing. No doubt they were
thinking that the words of Isaiah pertained to them.
But with the next sentence they became very angry with him. What did he say to make them so angry? He
spoke about a prophet not being accepted in his native place. He pointed out that the wonderful deeds he had done
elsewhere could not be done in their midst because of their lack of faith. He spoke of foreigners receiving blessings
from God ahead of Israelites.
Its sometimes hard to accept the fact that newcomers to our country may receive blessings that we wish to
receive ourselves. But the pattern is clear. God has special care for those who need Gods help the most.
