will keep your Favorites list ord e red and up to date. Each of your bookmarked sites

FavOrg’s main window displays a tree with all the
shortcuts on your Favorites list. To get started,
select whether to find favicons, update re-directed
links, or both, and then click the Go! button.

You can delete icons from the Favorites list by status—
Site not found, Page not found, Timeout or Access
denied. The Delete by status dialog shows you how many
shortcuts on your Favorites list fall into each category.

After the initial scan, each shortcut in your
Favorites list will have an icon next to it indicat-
ing the shortcut’s status. The ten possible
states are listed in the legend.

Select Pick Icon from the Favorite menu to copy
the selected favicon, or select Favorite | Assign
custom icon to bring up the Change Icon dialog.

Internet Explorer 5 looks in the
Web site’s root folder for an icon
file named Favicon.ico. If found, this icon
is used in the Favorites bar, the Favorites
menu and the Address bar instead of the
default, blue and white “e” icon. Custom

The problem with favicons is that they are
not persistent. If you empty your Tempo-
rary Internet Files folder, the icons are lost,
only way to restore a favicon is to delete
the link from the Favorites folder and recre-
ate it. Also, favicons are not recognised
under Version 4 of Internet Explorer.
This issue’s utility, FavOrg, makes your
favicons persistent and gives you the abil-
ity to associate any icon you choose with
a given shortcut. FavOrg can also check
your Favorites menu for dead links, updat-
links to the site’s root.
FavOrg runs under Windows 95, Win-
dows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
2000; it requires Internet Explorer 4 or
