workersattheRoyalArsenalinWoolwich,southeastLondon,and
wererenamedRoyalArsenalshortlyafterwards.[8]Theclubwere
renamedagaintoWoolwichArsenalafterbecomingalimited
companyin1893.[9]Theclubbecamethefirstsouthernmemberof
theFootballLeaguein1893,startingoutintheSecondDivision,
andwonpromotiontotheFirstDivisionin1904.Theclub'srelative
geographicisolationresultedinlowerattendancesthanthoseof
otherclubs,whichledtotheclubbecomingmiredinfinancial

theirfirstperiodofmajorsuccess.Hisrevolutionarytacticsandtraining,alongwiththesigningsofstar
playerssuchasAlexJamesandCliffBastin,laidthefoundationsoftheclub'sdominationofEnglish

Chapmandiedsuddenlyofpneumoniainearly1934,leavingJoe
ShawandGeorgeAllisontocarryonhissuccessfulwork.Under
theirguidance,Arsenalwonthreemoretitles,in193334,193435
and193738,andthe1936FACupwhilealsobecomingknownas
the"BankofEnglandclub."Askeyplayersretired,Arsenalhad
startedtofadebythedecade'send,andthentheinterventionofthe
SecondWorldWarmeantcompetitiveprofessionalfootballin

Afterthewar,Arsenalenjoyedasecondperiodofsuccessunder
Allison'ssuccessorTomWhittaker,winningtheleaguein194748and195253,andtheFACupin1950.
Theirfortuneswanedthereafterunabletoattractplayersofthesamecalibreastheyhadinthe1930s,the
clubspentmostofthe1950sand1960sintrophylessmediocrity.EvenformerEnglandcaptainBilly
Wrightcouldnotbringtheclubanysuccessasmanager,inastintbetween1962and1966.[17][18][19]
ArsenalbeganwinningsilverwareagainwiththesurpriseappointmentofclubphysiotherapistBertieMee
asmanagerin1966.AfterlosingtwoLeagueCupfinals,theywontheirfirstEuropeantrophy,the196970
InterCitiesFairsCup.Thiswasfollowedbyanevengreatertriumph:theirfirstLeagueandFACupdouble
in197071.[20]ThismarkedaprematurehighpointofthedecadetheDoublewinningsidewassoon
brokenupandthefollowingdecadewascharacterisedbyaseriesofnearmisses,startingwithArsenal
finishingasFACuprunnersupin1972,andFirstDivisionrunnersupin197273.
TerryNeillwasrecruitedbytheArsenalboardtoreplaceBertieMeeon9July1976andattheageof34he
becametheyoungestArsenalmanagertodate.WithnewsigningslikeMalcolmMacdonaldandPat
Jennings,andacropoftalentinthesidesuchasLiamBradyandFrankStapleton,theclubenjoyedtheir
bestformsincethe1971double,reachingatrioofFACupfinals(1978,1979and1980),andlosingthe
1980EuropeanCupWinners'CupFinalonpenalties.Theclub'sonlysuccessduringthistimewasalast
minute32victoryoverManchesterUnitedinthe1979FACupFinal,widelyregardedasaclassic.[17][21]
ThereturnofformerplayerGeorgeGrahamasmanagerin1986broughtathirdperiodofglory.Arsenal
wontheLeagueCupin1987,Graham'sfirstseasonincharge.ThiswasfollowedbyaLeaguetitlewinin
198889,wonwithalastminutegoalinthefinalgameoftheseasonagainstfellowtitlechallengers
Liverpool.Graham'sArsenalwonanothertitlein199091,losingonlyonematch,wontheFACupand
LeagueCupdoublein1993,andasecondEuropeantrophy,theEuropeanCupWinners'Cup,in
1994.[17][22]Graham'sreputationwastarnishedwhenhewasfoundtohavetakenkickbacksfromagent
RuneHaugeforsigningcertainplayers,[23]andhewasdismissedin1995.Hisreplacement,BruceRioch,
lastedforonlyoneseason,leavingtheclubafteradisputewiththeboardofdirectors.[24]
Theclub'ssuccessinthelate1990sandfirstdecadeofthe21stcenturyowedagreatdealtothe1996
appointmentofArsneWengerasmanager.Wengerbroughtnewtactics,anewtrainingregimeandseveral
foreignplayerswhocomplementedtheexistingEnglishtalent.ArsenalwonasecondLeagueandCup
doublein199798andathirdin200102.Inaddition,theclubreachedthefinalofthe19992000UEFA
Cup(losingonpenaltiestoGalatasaray),werevictoriousinthe2003and2005FACups,andwonthe
PremierLeaguein200304withoutlosingasinglematch,anachievementwhichearnedthesidethe

Arsenalreachedthefinalofthe2007and2011LeagueCups,losing
21toChelseaandBirminghamCityrespectively.Theclubhadnotgainedamajortrophysincethe2005
FACupuntil17May2014,whenArsenalbeatHullCityinthe2014FACupFinal,comingbackfroma2
0deficittowinthematch32.[30]Thisqualifiedthemforthe2014FACommunityShieldwherethey
wouldplayPremierLeaguechampionsManchesterCity.Theyrecordedaresounding30wininthegame,
winningtheirsecondtrophyinthreemonths.[31]NinemonthsaftertheirCommunityShieldtriumph,
ArsenalappearedintheFACupfinalforthesecondyearinarow,thrashingAstonVilla40inthefinal
andbecomingthemostsuccessfulclubinthetournament'shistorywith12titles.[32]On2August2015
ArsenalbeatChelsea10atWembleyStadiumtoretaintheCommunityShieldandearntheir14th

Unveiledin1888,RoyalArsenal'sfirstcrestfeaturedthreecannon
viewedfromabove,pointingnorthwards,similartothecoatofarms
oftheMetropolitanBoroughofWoolwich(nowadaystransferredto
thecoatofarmsoftheRoyalBoroughofGreenwich).Thesecan
sometimesbemistakenforchimneys,butthepresenceofacarved
lion'sheadandacascabeloneachareclearindicatorsthattheyare
cannon.[34]ThiswasdroppedafterthemovetoHighburyin1913,
onlytobereinstatedin1922,whentheclubadoptedacrest
Arsenal'sfirstcrestfrom1888
featuringasinglecannon,pointingeastwards,withtheclub's
nickname,TheGunners,inscribedalongsideitthiscrestonlylasted
until1925,whenthecannonwasreversedtopointwestwardanditsbarrelslimmeddown.[34]
In1949,theclubunveiledamodernisedcrestfeaturingthesamestyleofcannonbelowtheclub'sname,set
inblackletter,andabovethecoatofarmsoftheMetropolitanBoroughofIslingtonandascrollinscribed
withtheclub'snewlyadoptedLatinmotto,VictoriaConcordiaCrescit"victorycomesfromharmony",
coinedbytheclub'sprogrammeeditorHarryHomer.[34]Forthefirsttime,thecrestwasrenderedincolour,
whichvariedslightlyoverthecrest'slifespan,finallybecomingred,goldandgreen.Becauseofthe
numerousrevisionsofthecrest,Arsenalwereunabletocopyrightit.Althoughtheclubhadmanagedto

registerthecrestasatrademark,andhadfought(andeventuallywon)alonglegalbattlewithalocalstreet
traderwhosold"unofficial"Arsenalmerchandise,[35]Arsenaleventuallysoughtamorecomprehensive
legalprotection.Therefore,in2002theyintroducedanewcrestfeaturingmoremoderncurvedlinesanda
simplifiedstyle,whichwascopyrightable.[36]Thecannononceagainfaceseastandtheclub'snameis
writteninasansseriftypefaceabovethecannon.Greenwasreplacedbydarkblue.Thenewcrestwas
criticisedbysomesupporterstheArsenalIndependentSupporters'Associationclaimedthattheclubhad
ignoredmuchofArsenal'shistoryandtraditionwithsucharadicalmoderndesign,andthatfanshadnot
beenproperlyconsultedontheissue.[37]
Untilthe1960s,abadgewaswornontheplayingshirtonlyforhighprofilematchessuchasFACupfinals,
usuallyintheformofamonogramoftheclub'sinitialsinredonawhitebackground.[38]
ThemonogramthemewasdevelopedintoanArtDecostylebadgeonwhichthelettersAandCframeda
footballratherthantheletterF,thewholesetwithinahexagonalborder.Thisearlyexampleofacorporate
logo,introducedaspartofHerbertChapman'srebrandingoftheclubinthe1930s,wasusednotonlyon
CupFinalshirtsbutasadesignfeaturethroughoutHighburyStadium,includingabovethemainentrance
andinlaidinthefloors.[39]From1967,awhitecannonwasregularlywornontheshirts,untilreplacedby
theclubcrest,sometimeswiththeadditionofthenickname"TheGunners",inthe1990s.[38]
Inthe201112season,Arsenalcelebratedtheir125thyearanniversary.Thecelebrationsincludeda
modifiedversionofthecurrentcrestwornontheirjerseysfortheseason.Thecrestwasallwhite,
surroundedby15oakleavestotherightand15laurelleavestotheleft.Theoakleavesrepresentthe15
foundingmembersoftheclubwhometattheRoyalOakpub.The15laurelleavesrepresentthedesign
detailonthesixpencepiecespaidbythefoundingfatherstoestablishtheclub.Thelaurelleavesalso
representstrength.Tocompletethecrest,1886and2011areshownoneithersidesofthemotto"Forward"
atthebottomofthecrest.[40]

Colours
FormuchofArsenal'shistory,theirhomecolourshavebeenbrightredshirtswith
whitesleevesandwhiteshorts,thoughthishasnotalwaysbeenthecase.Thechoice
ofredisinrecognitionofacharitabledonationfromNottinghamForest,soonafter
Arsenal'sfoundationin1886.TwoofDialSquare'sfoundingmembers,Fred
BeardsleyandMorrisBates,wereformerForestplayerswhohadmovedto
Woolwichforwork.Astheyputtogetherthefirstteaminthearea,nokitcouldbe
found,soBeardsleyandBateswrotehomeforhelpandreceivedasetofkitanda
ball.[8]Theshirtwasredcurrant,adarkshadeofred,andwaswornwithwhite
shortsandsockswithblueandwhitehoops.[41][42]

In1933,HerbertChapman,wantinghisplayerstobemoredistinctlydressed,

storyreportsthatChapmannoticedasupporterinthestandswearingared
sleevelesssweateroverawhiteshirtanotherwasthathewasinspiredbyasimilar
outfitwornbythecartoonistTomWebster,withwhomChapmanplayedgolf.[43]
Regardlessofwhichstoryistrue,theredandwhiteshirtshavecometodefineArsenalandtheteamhave

wornthecombinationeversince,asidefromtwoseasons.Thefirstwas196667,whenArsenalworeall
redshirts[42]thisprovedunpopularandthewhitesleevesreturnedthefollowingseason.Thesecondwas
200506,thelastseasonthatArsenalplayedatHighbury,whentheteamworecommemorativeredcurrant
shirtssimilartothosewornin1913,theirfirstseasoninthestadiumtheclubrevertedtotheirnormal
coloursatthestartofthenextseason.[43]Inthe200809season,Arsenalreplacedthetraditionalallwhite
sleeveswithredsleeveswithabroadwhitestripe.[42]
Arsenal'shomecolourshavebeentheinspirationforatleastthreeotherclubs.In1909,SpartaPrague
adoptedadarkredkitliketheoneArsenalworeatthetime[43]in1938,Hibernianadoptedthedesignof
theArsenalshirtsleevesintheirowngreenandwhitestrip.[44]In1920,SportingClubedeBraga'smanager
returnedfromagameatHighburyandchangedhisteam'sgreenkittoaduplicateofArsenal'sredwith
whitesleevesandshorts,givingrisetotheteam'snicknameofOsArsenalistas.[45]Theseteamsstillwear
thosedesignstothisday.
FormanyyearsArsenal'sawaycolourswerewhiteshirtsandeitherblackorwhiteshorts.Inthe196970
season,Arsenalintroducedanawaykitofyellowshirtswithblueshorts.Thiskitwasworninthe1971FA
CupFinalasArsenalbeatLiverpooltosecurethedoubleforthefirsttimeintheirhistory.[46]Arsenal
reachedtheFACupfinalagainthefollowingyearwearingtheredandwhitehomestripandwerebeatenby
LeedsUnited.ArsenalthencompetedinthreeconsecutiveFACupfinalsbetween1978and1980wearing
their"lucky"yellowandbluestrip,[46]whichremainedtheclub'sawaystripuntilthereleaseofagreenand
navyawaykitin198283.Thefollowingseason,Arsenalreturnedtotheyellowandbluescheme,albeit
withadarkershadeofbluethanbefore.
WhenNiketookoverfromAdidasasArsenal'skitproviderin1994,Arsenal'sawaycolourswereagain
changedtotwotoneblueshirtsandshorts.Sincetheadventofthelucrativereplicakitmarket,theaway
kitshavebeenchangedregularly,withArsenalusuallyreleasingbothawayandthirdchoicekits.During
thisperiodthedesignshavebeeneitherallbluedesigns,orvariationsonthetraditionalyellowandblue,
suchasthemetallicgoldandnavystripusedinthe200102season,theyellowanddarkgreyusedfrom

FormostoftheirtimeinsoutheastLondon,ArsenalplayedattheManorGroundinPlumstead,apartfrom
athreeyearperiodatthenearbyInvictaGroundbetween1890and1893.TheManorGroundwasinitially
justafield,untiltheclubinstalledstandsandterracingfortheirfirstFootballLeaguematchinSeptember

(withtwoexceptionsinthe189495season),untilthemoveto

WidelyreferredtoasHighbury,ArsenalStadiumwastheclub's
homefromSeptember1913untilMay2006.Theoriginalstadium
wasdesignedbytherenownedfootballarchitectArchibaldLeitch,
andhadadesigncommontomanyfootballgroundsintheUKatthe
time,withasinglecoveredstandandthreeopenairbanksof
terracing.[52]Theentirestadiumwasgivenamassiveoverhaulinthe
1930s:newArtDecoWestandEaststandswereconstructed,
openingin1932and1936respectively,andaroofwasaddedtothe
NorthBankterrace,whichwasbombedduringtheSecondWorld

Warandnotrestoreduntil1954.[52]
Highburycouldholdmorethan60,000spectatorsatitspeak,andhadacapacityof57,000untiltheearly
1990s.TheTaylorReportandPremierLeagueregulationsobligedArsenaltoconvertHighburytoanall
seaterstadiumintimeforthe199394season,thusreducingthecapacityto38,419seatedspectators.[53]
ThiscapacityhadtobereducedfurtherduringChampionsLeaguematchestoaccommodateadditional
advertisingboards,somuchsothatfortwoseasons,from1998to2000,ArsenalplayedChampionsLeague
homematchesatWembley,whichcouldhousemorethan70,000spectators.[54]
ExpansionofHighburywasrestrictedbecausetheEastStandhad
beendesignatedasaGradeIIlistedbuildingandtheotherthree
standswereclosetoresidentialproperties.[52]Theselimitations
preventedtheclubfrommaximisingmatchdayrevenueduringthe
1990sandfirstdecadeofthe21stcentury,puttingthemindangerof
beingleftbehindinthefootballboomofthattime.[55]After
consideringvariousoptions,in2000Arsenalproposedbuildinga
new60,361capacitystadiumatAshburtonGrove,sincenamedthe

names.[60]ThestadiumwillbeofficiallyknownasEmiratesStadiumuntilatleast2028,andtheairlinewill
