Universty City
University City is located in the Golden Triangle area defined by the three
freeways that border it and Rose Canyon. Rose Canyon is named for Louis
Rose, an early settler and entrepreneur who purchased the canyon in the late
1800s.
The canyon was a thriving place when Rose owned it. He had two creeks, a
tannery, a brickyard and he tried to mine for coal. Today the canyon is open
space used by runners and walkers. They share the brush and trails with an
assortment of rabbits, snakes and other wildlife. The train runs down the
middle of the canyon offering rustic views to its riders.
The canyon offers a contrast to the sleek office buildings and shopping areas of
University Town Center. The residential area was originally conceived of in the
1960s as a place for those involved with the University of California San Diego
to live. It has evolved into a middle-class, close knit neighborhood of families
and kids.
Excellent freeway access and the mixed use development of the area makes
University City an attractive place to live. UCSD Medical Center, La Jolla
Playhouse, Birch Aquarium and many other attractions are close by.
Condominiums and apartments are now part of the landscape on the northern
edge of the area.
The Mormon Temple with its twin 190 foot steeples rises close to the I-5
gracing the area with its striking architecture.
The University Community planning area encompasses approximately 8,500
acres. The area is bounded by Los Peasquitos Lagoon and the toe of the eastfacing slopes of Sorrento Valley on the north, the railroad track, the Marine
Corps Air Station Miramar and Interstate 805 on the east, State Route 52 on
the south, and Interstate 5, Gilman Drive, North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla
Farms, and the Pacific Ocean on the west.

IMPORTANT ADVISORY:
Caution should be taken when using data for small population groups, particularly at small levels of geography. Minor adjustments were made
(such as correcting the location of housing units that were erroneously allocated by the Census Bureau to roads and open space) to more
accurately reflect the regions true population and housing distribution.
In addition, Census 2010 does not include information about structure type or household income. Those details and other demographic estimates
shown here are developed from other sources, including the California Department of Finance E-5 estimates for cities and the County of San
Diego; San Diego County Assessor Records, vital events records from the California Department of Health, and income data from the U.S. Census
Bureau American Community Survey.
Caution should always be taken when using data for small population groups, particularly at small levels of geography.

EdUCate! (University City Foundation
for Public Schools)

Marie Curie Elementary, built in 1963, is located in University City, a community

named for its proximity to the University of California, San Diego. We serve 600
students in grades K5. Over half of our students are local residents and the rest are
enrolled through the districts Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP) or
School Choice Program. We are committed to the academic, social, and emotional
growth of all our students, with the principal, teachers, and community working together to create and maintain a comprehensive curriculum based on state standards
and student needs. Curies students continue to excel in statewide tests, placing Curie
at the top 10 percent in Californias Academic Performance Index (API) ranking,
which reflects the remarkable efforts of our entire school community.

Instruction and Curriculum

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has formally adopted
academic standards and curriculum frameworks approved by the California State
Board of Education for all subject areas. District curriculum materials, instructional
strategies and supports, professional development, and student assessments are
aligned with state standards and focused on ensuring that every student has access to
a high-quality, rigorous, and engaging instructional program. A range of support
opportunities is available for students needing additional assistance.
The daily instructional program for all students at Curie consists of a balanced
literacy block, a mathematics program that teaches strategies and content through
discussion, exploration, analysis, written language, direct instruction, and hands-on
experimentation, a science program supplemented by hands-on Foss kits, and a social studies program that is integrated into the curriculum. Students also have art,
music, and physical education as part of their weekly curriculum.

Opportunities for Parent Involvement

Parents have many opportunities to be involved at their childrens school site (for
example, governance committees, special events, fundraising events, parent organizations, and in classrooms) and at the district level (for example, district councils/committees, Parent University, and special events). We also encourage parents to
support their children at home by making their expectations about school clear and
creating a positive homework and learning environment.
At Curie Elementary we are committed to obtaining community resources for
our school and invite all constituencies to assist us in the education of our students.
Curies parent community supports the staff and students by serving on the
School Site Council/Site Governance Team, the Parent Teacher Association, University City Cluster Committee, EdUCate! Foundation, and Partners in Education, as
well as by raising funds for school programs such as art, music, physical education,
field trip transportation, family nights, our multicultural fair, and the school theatrical
performance.
If you want to get involved, please contact Michelle Jimenez at (858) 453-4184.

Our school gratefully acknowledges the

tremendous support we receive
from our partners, parents,
and community volunteers.

Academic Progress
This table displays selected indicators of the schools academic progress. The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of
the academic performance and progress of Californias public schools. API scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a statewide API performance target of 800. The statewide API rank ranges from 1 to 10. Detailed information about the API can be found at the CDE website at
www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ap/. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measures how well the school is performing based on standards required by
the federal No Child Left Behind law.

Doyle Elementary School is a high-performing school located in University City.
Children of University of California, San Diego (UCSD) graduate students, professors, and research scientists from all over the world make up a large part of Doyles
student enrollment. Students represent over 30 countries and 31 languages. The cultural diversity provides an ideal setting where children and adults can learn to respect
and appreciate each other. Our mission is to provide a program with high expectations in a multicultural setting where students learn to respect each others differences. Our goals are to raise achievement test scores of all students and to reinforce
consideration and good behavior.
Doyle has a very strong and experienced teaching staff. All of the teachers are
fully credentialed and have taught an average of 18 years. Many on the staff have
taught at Doyle since it opened in 1979. Our focus is on math and literacy, with an
emphasis on writing. We are also increasing the use of technology and enhancing our
computer lab.
We are proud of our parent involvement with the Doyle Parent Teacher Association (PTA), School Site Council, and Governance Team. Many of our parents participate in Career Day, Read Across America Day, family nights, and our International Festival.

The staff at Doyle continues to strengthen the curriculum by participating in
professional development to improve teaching strategies. Our school administrators
attend monthly conferences, and they use the information learned to help guide staff
development for teachers at Doyle. Teachers are provided opportunities to study and
improve instructional practice through grade-level and department meetings, observational visits to other classrooms, participation in study groups, and training on
specific instructional strategies.

At Doyle Elementary we are committed to obtaining community resources for
our school and invite all constituencies to assist us in the education of our students.
We communicate our parent involvement events via the Connect-ED phone and
e-mail system, website, school calendar, and PTA newsletters. We also have a
monthly Principals Coffee, which is a series informal meetings to discuss school
issues.
If you want to get involved, please contact Mary Taylor at (858) 455-6230, ext.

Principals Statement
Greetings from Spreckels Bilingual Magnet School! We are located in the University
City community of the city of San Diego. Our school features a bilingual program in
which students are exposed to Spanish, a music program, a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) seminar program, and a technology lab. In addition to our resident
students, children from more than 40 neighborhoods throughout San Diego also attend our school through the bilingual magnet program. All of our students learn in a
culturally and linguistically diverse environment. We have an outstanding Parent
Teacher Association that sponsors many activities for our students, parents, and staff.
We are also one of five public schools in University City sponsored by the EdUCate!
Foundation, which awards educational grants.
All of our teachers are fully committed to accelerating the academic achievement of all students and to closing the achievement and opportunity gaps for students
performing below proficiency. All Spreckels teachers in grades 35 are GATE certified or in the process of obtaining their GATE credentials. The Associated Student
Body (ASB) meets twice per month to discuss students needs.
Highlights from the 201112 school year included the EdUCate!-sponsored
Taste of the Triangle and Spooky Sprint fundraisers, the Jump for Heart fundraiser,
Colonial Days, Gold Rush Days, a Native American Powwow, a Day of the Dead
celebration, and a Cinco De Mayo Fiesta/Day of the Child celebration, which included a silent auction.

Principals Statement
Welcome to William H. Standley Middle School, a California Distinguished School.
We are located in the northern region of San Diego in the University City area. We
serve several communities through the School Choice Program and Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP). We are fortunate to have a socioeconomically
and ethnically diverse population that reflects the demographics of the city.
We emphasize personal responsibility by providing each student and teacher
with a school planner that includes the school discipline, honesty, attendance, and
dress policies. We provide advanced mathematics classes and rigorous Gifted and
Talented Education (GATE) program classes for qualifying students. Our science
curriculum provides for dynamic, hands-on learning by our well-trained science
teachers. Standley has an award-winning music program, including both orchestra
and band at various levels. In addition, we offer several programs specifically designed to further accelerate student achievement, including before- and after-school
tutoring, computer labs, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), special
interest clubs, and advisories. We provide a variety of electives that include world
languages, computers, music, and art. Our high-quality teachers and students use the
latest technology and instructional materials, including Integrated 21st-Century (i21)
Interactive Classrooms.

Standley offers an intensive, high-quality program to help its diverse population
succeed. Our school is receiving advanced technological tools through the Integrated
21st-Century (i21) Interactive Classroom initiative. The i21 classroom is an engaging
and personalized learning environment designed to optimize teaching and learning
through integration of mobile computing, audio, visual, and formative assessment
technologies across the curriculum. In addition, the staff provides academic options
at each grade level to enhance learning and the achievement of standards. All students attend an advisory period devoted to helping them succeed academically, socially, and personally. AVID is offered to grade 7 and 8 students to help them
achieve better grades and prepare for college.

Opportunities for Parent Involvement

Our school gratefully acknowledges the

tremendous support we receive
from our partners, parents,
and community volunteers.

San Diego Unified School District

Parents have many opportunities to be involved at their childrens school site and at
the district level. We also encourage parents to support their children at home by
making their expectations about school clear and creating a positive homework and
learning environment.
At Standley Middle we are committed to obtaining community resources for our
school and invite all constituencies to assist us in the education of our students.
Our Parent Teacher Student Association is supportive and committed to helping
increase school achievement. The School Site Council works with the Site Governance Team to provide shared decision making to help increase student achievement.
If you want to get involved, please contact Lauri Bollinger at (858) 455-0550,
ext. 1220.

Standardized Testing and Reporting Program Results

Through the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, students in grades 211 are tested annually in various subjects. The California Standards Tests (CST) include English language arts and mathematics (grades 211), science (grades 5, 8, and 911),
and historysocial science (grades 8 and 911). To protect student privacy, an asterisk (*) is used in the following table instead of the percentage when the number of students tested is 10 or less in that category. A dash () indicates that data are not available.

Principals Statement
University City High School (UCHS) opened in 1981 and is located in the heart of
the University City community of San Diego, known as the Golden Triangle.
UCHS and the surrounding elementary and middle schools work collaboratively with
parents and the community to create a rigorous academic program.
UCHS enrolls approximately 1,850 students in grades 9 through 12. A diverse
student population attends UCHS, with about 60 percent of the students living within
the local school boundaries. Our mission is to educate students to become productive
and responsible citizens, who realize their full potential through lifelong learning.
As a community we expect UCHS graduates will be students who are active
contributors to their community who give of their time, talents, and energy to benefit
others; collaborative citizens who work well with people of different backgrounds
and opinions; effective and knowledgeable communicators who are able to listen,
read, write, think clearly, and respond appropriately to written materials and spoken
language; independent critical thinkers and decision makers who can discern and
solve problems creatively using prior knowledge and research skills; technologically
skilled practitioners who have a working knowledge of current technology and its
application for personal and workplace purposes; and responsible planners who
know how to set long-term learning and career goals.

Instruction and Curriculum

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has formally adopted
academic standards and curriculum frameworks approved by the California State
Board of Education for all subject areas. District curriculum materials, instructional
strategies and supports, professional development, and student assessments are
aligned with state standards. A range of support opportunities is available for students needing additional assistance.
UCHS offers a range of excellent instructional programs. The Advanced Placement program, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, including seminar classes, Arts Technology Academy, Biomedical Technology, and the special
education program address the needs of identified students. UCHS students have the
opportunity to take visual and performing arts courses as well as practical arts courses. Additional support for students is offered on-site, with an after-school course
make-up program, Saturday school, and after-school tutoring, AVID classes, and an
internet high school.
